When the August Wilson estate gave Denzel Washington the film rights to his 10-play Century Cycle, he brought them to Netflix Original Films chief Scott Stuber, who signed on to back them all.
The first, Wilson rookie and Public Theatre director George C. Wolfe’s “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” will clean up at the Oscars. Even though it’s set in 1920s Chicago, it’s timely in the way that it shows how simmering pain and anguish can explode. Wolfe wisely moved away from winter and leaned into pushing the film’s sweltering heat.
Actors will love Oscar winner Viola Davis (“Fences”) as the gold-toothed, hip-swaying, bosomy, sweat-drenched blues singer of the title, and never-nominated Chadwick Boseman (“Black Panther”) as her restless, go-getter trumpeter: he could follow Heath Ledger (“The Dark Knight”) and Peter Finch (“Network”) to win a posthumous Oscar.

Netflix is negotiating a deal to acquire global rights to Aaron Sorkin’s “The Trial of the Chicago 7” from Cross Creek Pictures, Variety has learned.
The film follows the Chicago Seven, a group of seven activists who were charged by the federal government with conspiracy, inciting to riot and other charges stemming from anti-Vietnam War protests that broke out during the 1968 Democratic National Convention. Intended as peaceful protests, they instead devolved into a violent clash with police and the National Guard. The organizers of the protest included Abbie Hoffman, Jerry Rubin, Tom Hayden and Bobby Seale, and their trial was one of the most notorious in history. It’s a hot-button story, one that is sure to resonate in a presidential election year and at a time when protests over racial injustice are breaking out across the country. Cross Creek financed and produced the film.

It hasn’t been the greatest year for moviegoing. Most theaters have been shuttered since March, and major festivals such as Tribeca and Cannes have been canceled, postponed or reimagined as virtual events. In the coronavirus era, it’s unclear if the Oscars can move forward as planned, at least without making some massive changes to the way the awards are campaigned for and handed out. Here are five burning questions facing the next edition of the Academy Awards.
What if the Oscars are delayed?
As Variety first reported, the Academy is considering pushing back the Oscar ceremony from its original airdate of Feb. 28. If that happens, it could scramble the awards-season calendar. Should the Oscars feel the need to move deeper into 2021 in the hope of finding a post-pandemic — or post-vaccine — perch, that could put pressure on other awards shows, such as the Golden Globes and the Screen Actors Guild Awards,...

The pandemic has not only caused numerous delays and cancellations in terms of theatrical releases and film festivals — it’s also causing some distributors and producers to rethink their strategy when it comes to what films they’ll even bring to festivals this year, in whatever form they end up taking. As of now, the vast majority of spring and summer film festivals have either been canceled, postponed, or switched to digital-only, but when it comes to the fall, as restrictions may ease up, many are exploring what avenues they can take in terms of a mix of in-person and virtual presentations. Some of the most-anticipated films of the year, however, will not be taking part.
Anne Thompson reports that Netflix is planning to skip the fall festivals, including Telluride, Venice, Toronto, New York, BFI London, AFI Fest, and more. With a slate that includes David Fincher’s Mank, Charlie Kaufman...

While we haven’t seen a Latino superhero in the Marvel Cinematic Universe yet, there are plenty of heroes from comic book culture they could draw from. Here are some of the biggest Latino superheroes from comic books and TV. Marvel made waves in 2011 when Miles Morales replaced Peter Parker as Spiderman in the Ultimate Universe. After moving to Marvel’s main universe, Miles teamed up with Peter and became the new protector of New York. White Tiger was the first Puerto Rican superhero and has been played by both men and women. The current White Tiger, Ava Ayala, is played by.

This week was the unveiling of the Captain America: Civil War set visit pieces and interviews, so we got a bunch of semi-new information from the horses’ mouths. The structure of the set visit embargoes were based off the respective “Teams” in this Civil War.
Team Captain America started off the rollout because the scene that everyone was on set for was the German Airport battle, specifically Team Captain America running towards Team Iron Man (the shot in the trailer). Paul Rudd was off doing green screen work to become Giant Man in the scene and apparently Tony Stark and company are defending a Quinjet from Team Cap. The Iron Man side wasn’t shot in view of any of the reporters, so that was left for Day Two of the set visit rollout.

Everyone needs time and space to heal after a breakup, and Sunday's episode of Keeping Up with the Kardashians was all about Khloé Kardashian trying to go on with her life as her divorce from Lamar Odom moved forward.
By her side throughout the process and constantly checking in on her was sister Kim Kardashian West, who stopped by Khloé's house to ask how she was doing.
"I don't know, the whole thing just sucks," Khloé replied, looking upset as she explained that she was finally starting to understand that her chapter with Odom – which was such a "huge part" of life – was finally ending.

As Jessica Jones moves into its second act, is David Tennant's performance as the villainous Kilgrave proving too charismatic and likeable?
Marvel's Jessica Jones is available to view now on Netflix, and as with Daredevil we'll be providing (mostly) daily episode-by-episode coverage for those who want to follow it with us. Each instalment of these viewing notes will look at how the show's plot, characters and story relate to the comic source material, providing background information and pointers for those who want to know more.
Please note that while we might occasionally reveal the way plots developed in the comics, we are trying to be sensitive to any surprises the TV show may have in store. These notes are written immediately after the episode is watched, so any speculation about the way the story may go is purely that!

Lions and tigers and Kellan Lutz, oh my! The hunky "Twilight" star -- who hosts Fox's new series, "Bullseye," premiering this Wednesday -- made us swoon more than usual this weekend, as he got up close and personal with a group of baby lions while visiting The Black Jaguar-White Tiger Foundation in Mexico City. In the incredibly adorable video above, the 30-year-old animal activist -- who has worked with PETA in the past -- is almost overpowered by the collection of cuddly felines, the actor struggling to get to his feet as they grab hold of his arms and legs. Even they can't get enough of him! According to the foundation's official website, the group is focused on "rescuing what people consider Big Cats from bad circumstances" like breeders, zoos and circuses. They currently have over 80 giant kitties at the preserve, including tigers and jaguars. Want to see even...

Since the Marvel Universe was conceived of in the much less diverse days of the early 1960s, the majority of the characters that have risen to prominence are straight, white and male (looking your way, every member of The Avengers other than Black Widow). And while Phase One of the Marvel Cinematic Universe wasn't completely lacking in diversity, most of the women there served as a love interests (Pepper Potts, Betty Ross, Jane Foster and Peggy Carter) and there were even fewer characters of color (James Rhodes as War Machine and the Ultimate version of Nick Fury, himself previously Caucasian in the comics).
Things look to be improving for Phase Two, with characters like Sif and War Machine getting prominent placement and Falcon and Sharon Carter suiting up for action. But we think Marvel can really strive for diversity by utilizing some of the great characters mentioned below in Phase Three.
