The intensely poetic dark passion behind “Blue Valentine” seeped into even its road to the big screen, according to writer/director Derek Cianfrance.
During IndieWire’s “Screen Talk” live at the New Directors/New Films festival, presented by Film at Lincoln Center and the Museum of Modern Art, Cianfrance told podcast co-hosts Ryan Lattanzio and Anne Thompson that he believed the project itself was “cursed” for more than a decade due to its stalled production process. Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams eventually were cast as an ill-fated married couple struggling to maintain their love across years together.
Cianfrance began writing the script for the Oscar-nominated feature while at Sundance 1998 after the premiere of his debut film “Brother Tied.” It took him 12 years and 66 script drafts until “Blue Valentine” was finally released in 2010.
“For ‘Blue Valentine,’ I spent so many years [on it]. People said, ‘Just make the movie,'” Cianfrance said. “For me on that movie,...

When Cobra Kai returns to Netflix for its sixth and final season, the Karate Kid spinoff plans to expand the Miyagiverse significantly. The teen-focused drama Crane kicked martial arts action fans in the face in 2018, building on the Karate Kid legacy started by Ralph Macchio (Daniel Larusso), William Zabka (Johnny Lawrence), and Pat Morita (Mr. Miyagi). With every season, Cobra Kai has grown through fan-service casting, interpersonal drama, and hard-hitting action. No one could have predicted the Miyagiverse would expand the way it has because of Cobra Kai, and now the show’s co-creator, Jon Hurwitz, says fans can expect Season 6 to explore the franchise in exciting ways like never before!
In a thread on Twitter/X, Hurwitz assured fans the final season of the series delivers big surprises, in-depth character flashbacks, and plot elements that expand the Miyagiverse.
“Season 6 expands the ‘Karate Kid/Cobra Kai’ universe more than the first 5 seasons combined.

Sony‘s untitled Karate Kid film is ready to make Ben Wang‘s heart go pitter-pat after adding Cruel Summer actress Sadie Stanley to the cast. Stanley plays the romantic lead opposite Ben Wang (American Born Chinese) in the forthcoming marital arts drama, which also stars Joshua Jackson, Jackie Chan and Ralph Macchio.
Plot specifics remain a mystery, though we hear Sony will move the story to the East Coast and focus on a teen from China who finds identity and strength in martial arts. During his journey of self-discovery, Wang’s character meets a disciplined martial arts master. (Welcome to Animation Celebration, a recurring feature where we explore the limitless possibilities of animation as a medium. In this edition: season 3 of "Clone High" and "Jellystone!")
Animation fans (and fans of good movies regardless of style) have been thrust into an emotional tornado spinning as wildly as the Tasmanian Devil regarding the release of director Dave Green ("Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows") and writer Samy Burch's ("May December") live-action/animated hybrid Looney Tunes courtroom flick, "Coyote vs. Acme." What should be an absolute no-brainer hit at the box office is at risk of being scrapped for a tax write-off despite positive test screenings, the result of yet another frustrating corporate decision prioritizing capitalism over creativity, and an all-out attack on the art of filmmaking.
Of course, you realize, this means war.

The members of the audience who loved Jessica Jones during its successful run in the past might also remember the character of The Purple Man, a.k.a Kilgrave, played expertly by actor David Tennant. In fact, for many of the fans of the show, this antagonist may have been one of the most memorable parts of the series.
David Tennant as Kilgrave in a still from Jessica Jones
And despite the character being taken out of the equation in the series for good, the actor has time and time again expressed his desire to return to his role in the MCU. Yet again, the start has revealed how he would love to return as Kilgrave in the future, but this time, it seems highly likely that the star might make a return in the upcoming Daredevil: Born Again under the Devil’s Reign storyline that will truly honor his character.

It's hard to imagine anyone besides Alyson Hannigan as the unforgettable sidekick-turned-superpowered Willow Rosenberg in the hit series "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," but the casting directors almost went in a completely different direction. Indeed, the role nearly went to another accomplished television actor — Melanie Lynskey, the Emmy-nominated star of the acclaimed Showtime series "Yellowjackets."
The New Zealand actor kicked off her career with a leading role in Peter Jackson's 1994 film "Heavenly Creatures" opposite "Titanic" star Kate Winslet. She had also appeared in Jackson's 1996 horror-comedy "The Frighteners" -- which, like "Heavenly Creatures," was filmed in New Zealand — when she got the opportunity to audition for "Buffy the Vampire Slayer."
"It was kind of a visa issue, but not really," she told The Hollywood Reporter in 2023. "I also was not sure about doing television at that time. It was very early in my career. I had a very old-school agent who was like,...

Ever since he exploded onto the horror scene in 1996 by revitalizing the slasher flick with his screenplay for "Scream," Kevin Williamson has been one of Hollywood's go-to writer/creators for teen skewing films and television shows — and it all happened so fast. Within a span of three months, Williamson had "I Know What You Did Last Summer" and "Scream 2" tearing up the box office, and "Dawson's Creek" posting impressive Nielsen ratings for the WB.
He's had a couple of brief down periods, but he's never gone completely away (he rode out a rough creative run in the 2010s simply by having "The Vampire Diaries" on the air). Still, it's been a while since his name moved the needle in Hollywood, although his Covid-19 slasher "Sick" from 2022 did pretty well on streaming. But had the Gen X-er who'd connected so palpably with younger viewers for 20-plus years finally lost his touch?...

Kevin Williamson has set an overall deal with Universal Television, where he is developing four new series: adaptations of Alfred Hitchcock’s 1954 film “Rear Window,” Ruth Ware’s 2022 book “The It Girl” and David Fincher’s 1997 film “The Game,” as well as an original series titled “The Waterfront.”
Williamson is known for launching the “Scream” franchise and creating “Dawson’s Creek” and “The Vampire Diaries among several other film and TV credits. He enters the deal along with his production banner Outerbanks Entertainment.
If greenlit, the “Rear Window” series will stream on Peacock. It is billed as a “reimagining” of the Hitchcock film, which follows a photographer who uses a wheelchair and begins spying on his neighbors through his window. Williamson serves as writer and will executive produce alongside Outerbanks’ Ben Fast and Davis Entertainment’s John Davis and John Fox. Mkt Productions also produces.

No one can play Buffy Summers, the girl chosen by fate to be a vampire Slayer, better than Sarah Michelle Gellar. She's not the only one who's tried though.
For starters, Gellar is actually the sophomore Slayer — Buffy was first played by Kristy Swanson in the original "Buffy The Vampire Slayer" movie from 1992 (that's been soundly displaced by the TV series in pop culture). For the TV series, Charisma Carpenter originally auditioned for Buffy, but ultimately played Queen Bee Cordelia Chase instead, the part that Gellar turned down. The whole point of Cordelia is that she's what Buffy was before she became the Slayer (an acerbic popular girl), so casting Gellar and Carpenter made sense. In another world, they could pull off each others' parts.
Carpenter wasn't the only runner-up to play Miss Summers. Back in 2001, when "Buffy" was still ongoing and sensation, Natasha Lyonne appeared on "The Howard Stern Show...

SiriusXM and Stitcher will not have to face a lawsuit from former Dawson’s Creek star James Van Der Beek accusing them of reneging on a $700,000 podcast deal.
Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Robert Broadbelt, in a tentative order issued on Friday, dismissed the suit, finding that the audio giant “did not enter into a contract” with the actor since they didn’t finalize the agreement.
Van Der Beek said he reached a deal over email with executives from SiriusXM to host 40 episodes in exchange for a $700,000 minimum guarantee and a 50 percent cut of the net ad revenue. He sued in 2022 after the company walked away from the agreement.
Ruling in favor of SiriusXM on summary judgment, the court concluded that the two sides aren’t bound by an April 2022 document outlining the terms of the deal. It pointed to the first page of the proposal, which states that it’s for “discussion purposes only,...

So the central mythology, about the mystical inventor Milo Rambaldi, came to little as the show went on. No big deal. On “Alias,” it was all about the ride. That’s meant very literally: Each week, the show crash-landed into an episode-ending cliffhanger. As played by a luminous, game, and utterly committed Jennifer Garner, superspy double agent Sydney Bristow changed her loyalties, her allies, and her wigs. The only constant in her life was chaos, into which a writing team led by J.J. Abrams thrust her week after week.

The Netflix movie "May December" is heavily inspired by the real-life relationship between Mary Kay Letourneau and Vili Fualaau, which is probably why its depiction of stereotypes of Asian men feels so close to reality, too. The morally problematic tale takes viewers on a complex journey with troubling racial implications, particularly as they relate to weaponized whiteness and the depiction of Asian masculinity as subservient and childlike.
This highly publicized case, as well as its fictionalized version depicted in "May December," raises a central question: how did the fact that she's a white woman impact not only her ability to groom him - an Asian American boy - but also the public's reaction to the story?
This feeds into the harmful stereotype that Asian men are complacent and obedient.
In "May December," Julianne Moore plays Gracie, the fictionalized version of Letourneau, who began sexually abusing Fualauu when he was her sixth-grade student.

Son of a nutcracker! Has Will Ferrell’s instant-classic holiday flick been around two decades already? To celebrate Buddy the Elf and his wonder-filled 2003 New York City adventure that hit theaters on November 7, 2003, we’ve gathered a few fun facts about the film. Casting Also-rans Early on in Elf production, Saturday Night Live’s Chris Farley and Jim Carrey were very real possibilities for the lead. Also: Garry Shandling, that cotton-headed ninnymuggins, turned down the part of Buddy’s dad Walter that went to James Caan. And New Line Cinema really wanted Dawson’s Creek darling Katie Holmes as Gimbels elf Jovie, who was ultimately played by Zooey Deschanel. Big Apple Brief The production spent just 13 days actually shooting in NYC. Then it was off to Vancouver, where a hockey rink refroze into the North Pole and a mental institution doubled for Gimbels and other interiors. “One of the buildings, I think,...

As of publication, Michelle Williams is understood by many as one of the most gifted actors working today. She has two Golden Globe Awards, a Primetime Emmy Award, has been nominated for a Tony Award, and boasts a whopping five Academy Award nominations. Her breakthrough performance in "Brokeback Mountain" in 2005 earned her first Oscar nomination, and she's been one of the most highly sought-after performers ever since. But "Brokeback Mountain" was not Williams' first role, nor was she some actor plucked from obscurity and tossed into prestige cinema. For six seasons, Williams starred as Jen Lindley on "Dawson's Creek," one of the most formative teen dramas in television history.
And yet when she nabbed the role of Alma Beers del Mar in "Brokeback Mountain," the general conversation wasn't fixated on her years as a television teen star, nor were people dismissing her casting due to previous appearances in teen films...

When it comes to teen TV, there’s truly nothing that can make or break a show quite like a love triangle. Whether it’s Dawson/Pacey/Joey in Dawson’s Creek, or Conrad/Jeremiah/Belly in The Summer I Turned Pretty, love triangles are popular because they tap into an audience’s desire for competition and community. With two potential love interests to choose from, the act of watching a series becomes a game in itself as viewers place their bets on their choice of ship. And from a pure storytelling perspective, love triangles are an easy way to stir up drama and emotional conflict for the protagonist.

Joshua Jackson and Lupita Nyong’o are spending more time together!
The 45-year-old Dawson’s Creek actor and the 40-year-old Oscar-winning actress were spotted at a grocery store together on Monday (December 4) in Los Angeles.
This is the second time the two stars have been spotted together in the past two months.

TMZ has photos of Joshua and Lupita at the upscale Erewhon Market and it looks like they were trying to keep a low profile. While driving away together in a Tesla, Lupita was seen slouching down in the passenger seat, seemingly in an attempt to not be photographed.
Back in mid-October, Joshua and Lupita were seen attending a Janelle Monae concert together in L.A.
The outing came days after Joshua‘s marriage with Jodie Turner-Smith had ended and just one day after the concert, Lupita confirmed her split from Selema Masekela.

U.K. public service broadcaster ITV launched proprietary streamer Itvx almost exactly 12 months ago with a star-studded event in London featuring talent including Helen Bonham Carter (the lead in Itvx original “Nolly”) and “Without Sin” star Vicky McClure.
Signalling its commitment to the new platform (which replaced much-maligned catch-up service ITV Hub), ITV CEO Carolyn McCall also directed $1.6 billion into original content for Itvx in 2023 alone, a bold move which briefly hit the company’s share price. “I know the London stock market was quite surprised,” she told Variety earlier this year. “But we knew that we had to do that to make this step change. Because without that, we wouldn’t be a powerful U.K. streamer.”
Itvx is primarily a free-to-watch AVOD platform, echoing ITV’s position as a commercial Psb, although it does offer an ad-free premium tier which also offers paying subscribers access to BritBox U.
