Clint Eastwood stars as Luther Whitney, a skilled thief who breaks into a huge mansion and finds a hidden vault worth millions of dollars. But while he is there, the owner returns with a man who turns out to be the president of the United States. The sex becomes rough and when the president starts abusing her, she tries to stab him with a letter opener but his two bodyguards rush into the room and shoot her dead. They clean the place up and make it look as if she stumbled upon a burglar when she came home and the burglar killed her. This all happens as Luther sits in the darkness watching them, as soon as they leave, Luther begins to descend down a rope out the window, but the two agents return and see him and chase after him but he gets away. Now, with all the money he stole, Luther is planning on disappearing, but when he sees the president with the woman's husband at a public speech, who happens to be one of the presidents dearest friends , Luther decides that he isn't going to run away from him but instead will prove him guilty for what he did.
Based on the novel by David Buldacci, "Absolute Power" is an excellent thriller with fantastic performances from all of the cast. Clint Eastwood directs, produces and stars in this film. He had previously starred in and directed films like "The Rookie", "A Perfect World" and "The Bridges of Madison County", to name just a few and would later do the same in "Million Dollar Baby". Eastwood is excellent as usual in his role. Gene Hackman ( The Chamber, Mississippi Burning ) stars as the president and he is excellent too. Ed Harris ( Eye for an Eye, The Firm ) also provides an excellent performance and so do Laura Linney ( Class of '61, The Truman Show ) and Scott Glenn ( Courage Under Fire, The Silence of the Lambs ). E.G Marshall ( Tora! Tora! Tora!, 12 Angry Men ) also provides an excellent performance in one of the last films he would ever star in as he would died about a year later. William Goldman, the screenplay writer of "A Bridge Too Far" and the brilliant Stephen King adaptation "Misery", provides a good one here too.
"Absolute Power" is great movie with excellent performances from all of the cast. I haven't read the novel so I can't tell you whether or not this is a good adaptation but I highly recommend it anyway to everyone.
