After having met Jean Marais on the set of "S. O. S. Noronha" (1957), on which he he was hired as assistant director, Jacques Demy was introduced to Jean Cocteau who was so impressed by the young man's enthusiasm that he offered him the rights of his short play "Le Bel Indifférent" to adapt as his very first fictional film.
Actress Jeanne Allard was chosen for her striking resemblance to Maria Casares, who had played in a film also based on a Cocteau text, Les Dames Du Bois de Boulogne.
