Don't miss Tacey and her bouffant

A jewel heist is going just about as planned until the loot ends up in the back of a pick-up truck. Unaware of what he's carrying, the unsuspecting driver of the truck takes the fortune in jewels home with him. His young daughter finds the treasure and stuffs it into her doll. Unfortunately for this suburban family, one of the robbers is also a killer and he'll do anything to get his hands on the jewels.

I'd be stretching the truth if I said Psycho a Go-Go was a good movie. It's got far too many problems to be "good". Spotty acting, giant plot holes, bad editing, and poor sound are among the many problems you'll find in the movie. But the film's biggest weakness can be traced directly to its director – Al Adamson. Adamson is responsible for some of the worst, albeit entertaining, movies made in the 60s and 70s. In Psycho a Go-Go, Adamson's biggest sin is losing focus of what's going on. Too often, he lets the movie grind to a halt before going on to the next set-piece. Stronger direction and better pacing would have made a world of difference in the movie.

But the movie isn't without its strong points. Chief among them (and I'm not really sure how to put this), the film is just whacked-out enough to be fun despite itself. From the go-go dancers at the beginning, cool music choices, a coherent and interesting plot (yes, an Al Adamson movie with a plot I found interesting), and a prolonged chase through the snow, Psycho a Go-Go is at least worth a watch. There are also a couple of songs performed by Tacey Robbins with The Vendells that are almost worth the price of admission alone. The opening number, My L.A., is especially catchy. Finally, even though I called the acting spotty, the movie is not without at least one standout performance. Roy Morton plays the menacing killer to perfection.

**SPOILERS** Remade some seven years later in 1972 as "The Blood of Ghastly Horror" and the even more ridicules title "the Man with the Synthetic Brain" that had actors John Carradine and Tommy Kirk inserted into the film. "Psycho a Go-Go" seems to be, without any cuts and edits, a fairly good low-budget crime film with a nice, as well as hum-a-long, soundtrack that makes the movie a lot better then it's later absurd reincarnations.

Having their plan of robbing a jewel merchant go so smoothly at first the five hoods, Joe Travas Nick & Curtis and the getaway driver Vicky, are about to leave the building when the tied-up secretary Miss. Walker sets off the alarm alerting he security guard in the building. Making a run for it Travas throws the suitcase of jewels down on a truck and is shot by one of the guards. Hurt and asking his fellow robber Joe for help Travas gets a bullet in his chest by the crazed Joe killing him; it seems that Joe wanted to split the jewels with one less person thus keeping more for himself. Vicky who was supposed to get the jewels drives off empty handed but gets the licenses plate of the truck driver who unknowing has the stolen jewels.

Back at the crooks hideout the big mastermind of the operation and boss Vito is mad as hell for his men, and woman, losing the $500,000.00 in jewels and wants to trace the trucks plates in order to find out who owns it and get his, and his jewel robbers, ill-gotten gains back.

Finding that the truck belongs to a David Clark, a local contractor, the hoods break into his house and try to beat the truth out of him about where the jewels are only to find out that he has no idea what their talking about. The hoodlums also find out that Clark's wife and six year old daughter Linda and Nancy have left the city for a vacation at Lake Taho by bus. This has Joe & Curtis take off to get, or head, them off before they get away. Linda and her six year-old daughter Nancy don't know it but the valuable jewels are hidden,by an unsuspecting Nancy, inside a black mistrial doll that David gave her for a sixth birthday present.

What fascinated me most about the film "Psycho a Go-Go" was the appearance and acting of it's star Roy Morton playing the psycho killer Joe Corey. Looking like the Marine DI sergeant in the TV show "Gomor Plye USMC" Morton looked like he was doing, in some scenes, a Jack Nicholson imitation and this is years before most movie goers ever heard or even saw Jack Nicholson! Joe, or Roy Morton, was without a doubt the most interesting person in the movie and his acting as a mindless psycho was so real and disturbing that you had, like what it seemed like those in the movie, a hard time believing that he was actually acting.

Vito's attempt to retrieve his stolen jewels falls apart with him ending up getting shot by the police as they come to David's rescue with Nick, who was shot in the crossfire, and Vicky captured. Joe & Curtis catch up with Linda and Nancy at the Lake Taho bus terminal and kidnaps them only to have Joe go psycho, which was very natural for him, by trying to rape and murder them. Curtis, a brain damaged ex-prize fighter, comes to their rescue getting killed by Joe, with a hand gun, who Curtis at the time was beating the hell out of.

With Linda and Nancy on the run by car away from the crazed and homicidal Joe Corey he carjacks a car on the highway and is on their tail. This sets up the final scene with both Linda & Nancy trying to escape from Joe by doing some mountain climbing with Linda's husband and Nancy's father David coming to their rescue with his cop friend Frank.

Joe Corey does finally get his jewels finding them in Nancy's discarded doll only to end up together with them at the bottom of the 6,000 foot snow covered mountain that he was chasing Linda and Nancy on.

The acting of everyone in the film "Psycho a Go-Go" didn't even make a passing grade in a high-school play. Tacey Robbins as Linda Clark was out and out embarrassing with Miss. Robbins also doing a song, yes Linda Clark was a Go-Go dancer and singer in the movie, that was so bad that she sounded like she was singing it in a crowed New York City Subway car during the hight of 5:00PM rush hour.

It was Roy Morton's bone chilling performance that really made "Psycho a Go-Go" worth seeing and I often wonder what happened to him all these years since he just disappeared from sight and was never seen or heard from again?

Not a Very Good Picture

This film is clearly dated to an interesting time in American history. Notice the hairstyles on both the men and the women and the type of cars everybody drove. You don't see those any more. At any rate, the reason I bring these things up is because I think that in order to understand or enjoy this film a person has to appreciate the time-frame in which it was made. Whether it's the songs by "Linda Clark" (Tacey Robbins) or the nightclub atmosphere, there is something in this movie that probably makes no sense unless you've seen it firsthand. Now, don't get me wrong, this film is not a very good picture. Other than the performance of Roy Morton (as the psycho "Joe Corey") and the presence of the "go-go dancers" at the very beginning, I found most of the film to be quite routine and dull. Even so, this film exemplifies what a B-movie looked like back in the mid-60's and that's the standard by which it should be judged. So, people who see it now might think it's a lousy movie compared to films of today. And it probably is if you compare it today's standards. But I think we need to keep things in perspective. In short, while this movie is probably a bit below average, it isn't as bad as the score most people have given it. Neither is this movie one that will suit everyone's taste. For that reason I recommend it only for those who can understand and appreciate films from this period and are willing to make allowances.

I'm a fan of Psycho a Go-Go, and Al Adamson in general, though his films can be hit or miss at best. Psycho a Go-Go is about middleground for him, not as dreadfully incoherent as Blood of Dracula's Castle, not as existential and apocalyptic as Satan's Sadists. Yet "Psycho" can at times reach the weirdness of a David Lynch movie (Blue Velvet comes to mind), and at other times the "coolness" level of Tarantino's overrated Pulp Fiction. Here we have thin-tied gangsters in black zoot suits, dames in beehive hair with lounge voices, the catchy but surreal siren call of go-go song and dance, a chipmunk-voiced black doll, and a killer who is a cross between a young Jack Nicholson and Michael Ironside, with an ugly butch haircut and an uglier mind. The scene where he sadistically strangles a girl, intercut with the blinking neon blue lights of a seedy motel sign, is unquestionably a work of art, or at least of high imitation.

A decent genre flick without the pretensions of its later imitators, and a portal into the weird dark world of Los Angeles.

A while back, we covered Satan's Sadists, the movie that was Al Adamson's initial big hit. Psycho-A-Go-Go is where he got started.

Adamson was the son of silent film stars Denver Dixon and Dolores Booth. After working on some of his father's later films, he started his own production company with Sam Sherman called Independent-International Pictures.

From tinting a Filipino horror movie neon hues and releasing it as a movie shot in Spectrum X - Horror of the Blood Monsters - to filming two movies at Spahn Ranch and making two softcore stewardess movies in one year (1975's The Naughty Stewardesses and Blazing Stewardesses, which actually had parts written by the elderly Three Stooges who were unable to appear), Adamson's movies are all over the map. His films Dracula vs. Frankenstein and Carnival Magic are both shockingly inept and amazingly transcendent, sometimes at the very same time. Yeah, I get the incongruity of this statement.

This movie was to be a straight action picture, back when it had the title Echo of Terror. But soon, it turned into a vehicle for Adamson to promote Tacey Robbins' singing amidst a plot where a murderous jewel thief stalks a woman and her child after jewels are hidden inside the girl's Christie Minstrel doll. Yes, a singing black baby doll that sings old slave songs, 1965 grindhouse fare ain't the place to find woke storylines. I'd imagine that this plot point was cribbed from The Night of the Hunter.

Amazingly, Adamson would resurrect this movie numerous times over the next several years, turning it into a veritable zombie of a film. In 1969, it was completely re-edited, with John Carradine as a mad scientist added after the fact, and re-released as The Fiend with the Electronic Brain.

Two years after that, Adamson added even more footage to the film, including scenes with his wife Regina Carrol, and created an entirely new version called Blood of Ghastly Horror. The fact that three different movies are vying for one coherent narrative probably didn't matter to Adamson. All of this was released one more time as a fourth version of the film, The Man With the Synthetic Brain. I can only imagine the confusion of some viewers who had to be sure they'd seen this movie before, as the main villain's motivations go from being simply villainous to being experimented on by an evil doctor to dying early in the third and fourth versions of the film before his father brings a zombie to gain revenge on the family of the evil doctor. Imagine a movie being a sequel to itself but never telling you! Talk about confusing!

Adamson would end up with a rough end to his life, with his wife dying from cancer and then being murdered by his live-in contractor and buried in the concrete for his new pool.

One Of Al Adamson's Best

Very good suspenseful B movie from Schlock Master Al Adamson. If you saw this film in 1965 you probably would have thought that this young director Al Adamson was going places, but unfortunately this was probably the high water mark. Well cast beautifully shot with a great sound track. The psycho Joe played by Roy Morton is quite a memorable character with everyone else chipping in nicely. I can't understand why Mr. Morton wasn't a dependable character actor with his smile and demented laugh for the next thirty years. I highly recommend Psycho a Go Go.

must be judged on a different scale

here's the thing about this movie, and movies of its kind - they have to be judged on a different scale. there's no way anyone should compare a movie like this to "citizen kane" or, to a greater extent, "gone with the wind" because those are epic films with a lot more money backing the project. this isn't even a "b" studio film, it's an indie flick and, therefore, should be judged accordingly. the soundtrack has very little to do with the ebb and flow of the film, the directing and editing are amateurish, but not horrible, the acting is over-the-top in almost every instance (though roy morton has a good performance as a super-sleazy sex-driven criminal) and the color is garish. but all these things create a certain 60s "b-film" aesthetic that you can choose to like or dislike. if you're willing to go along for the ride then this film can provide some entertainment, if you're not then steer clear. while most aspects of the film are just average and add to the b grade aesthetic, the cinematography is noteworthy. considering the source, the cinematography stands out as rather good. unfortunately the dvd transfer puts the film in full frame, but one still gets the impression that the cinematographer knew what he was doing. who is the cinematographer? vilmos zsigmond, winner of an academy award for cinematography for his work on the deer hunter. he also worked on flesh and blood with verhoven, blow out and bonfire of the vanities with depalma, mccabe and mrs. miller with altman, and close encounters with spielberg. as for the story - it's a typical heist gone wrong tale with a nice touch here and there; not half bad. C.

Brilliant for the dough and for its genre!

I am the son, yes the son of Tacey Robbins. I have to tell you that I thought it was a miracle that Al and Tacey pulled off this movie. They had $2000, and a bunch of contributers who wanted to see Al's movie career and Tacey's singing career blossom. It took months to shoot it, and in my opinion, it was the perfect "C" movie for the cheese/sleeze era. It had a super cheezy plot, and wonderful music to accompany it. Remember, it was supposed to be a spoof on Go-Go girls who drove men crazy. Well, even the songs were meant to be spoofs and the whole idea is to make it fun and "cult-serious". YES, the acting wasn't perfect, and of course the movie was not without potholes, but I am telling you, as far as the movies of the time, Tacey and Al did a great job putting it all together and making it "campy" and goofy like it was intended. If you take this movie serious, you are wasting your time watching it, or you are some moron who just graduated from the New York School of Movie Ratings and need to find a new job.

For Al Adamson, this is as good as it gets.

Al Adamson has to be one of the worst directors in film history. However, like Hershell Gordon Lewis (another dreadful director and the man who made the cult classic TWO THOUSAND MANIACS), it just proves that even an incompetent boob at the helm can still get lucky once in a while. I've seen many Adamson films and was absolutely shocked that PSYCHO A GO-GO (probably one of the poorest named films of all time) was a pretty decent film--especially since it had a budget of only about $89. This is nothing like his long string of ultra-shlocky horror films he made later in the 60s and into the 70s--these films, believe it or not, are probably WORSE than the Ed Wood films (I kid you not--this is possible). If you don't believe me, try watching his HORROR OF THE BLOOD MONSTERS or Dracula VS. FRANKENSTEIN. To quote Colonel Kurtz, "...the horror".

I think that despite having an abysmally low overall rating just over 2.0, the other reviewers did a good job on this film. None of them disliked the film or gave it a bad review--understanding that for the money, it was an awfully watchable film. In particular, I ask you to read the review by 'sol', as it explains the plot very well--so well that my going over it in any detail is irrelevant. Instead, I'll just give a very quick synopsis.

A gang of crooks make a daring jewel robbery but the operation goes haywire when one of the victims triggers an alarm. In their haste to escape, one of the gang throws the bag with the loot into a nearby pickup truck. However, when the innocent driver of the truck soon leaves the vicinity, the gang track him down and brutalize him and his family. Of all the crooks, the most evil and menacing is Joe, who takes great delight in murdering innocent people. Will Joe kill the nice wife or the slightly annoying young daughter? Tune in yourself to see.

First, there is a lot to like. Joe was a great character and Roy Morton seemed competent playing this role (a rarity in an Adamson film--to have anyone who can act is usually a mistake) and was easy to hate. The music was also excellent, though at times repetitive. It was certainly unusual to hear such a lovely voice (Tacey Robbins) in a low-budget film as well. As for the script, it also wasn't bad and plays a lot like a Film Noir film of the 60s with a little gore and violence added into the mix. In addition, the location filming (especially at the end) was surprisingly and improved the film.

As to what was bad, the worst problem was probably the direction, as some of the shots were poorly framed or should have been redone--but Adamson, having the talent of a lemur, just wasn't up to the rigors of directing or spending more than $100 making any film! Smaller problems were acting as well as the presence of the minstrel doll (something that would no doubt offend many today) and the plot holes involving the escape of the mother and daughter. The child, though semi-competent, comes off as a bit whiny--worrying about this stupid doll as a psycho is chasing them! However, this is a minor concern. But a bigger concern is the writing after the two escape. Several times the mother COULD have ended it all (such as just picking up the gun when Joe was fighting with the boxer, running over Joe when he was standing in the road, etc.). Again, however, due to the budget, you can't nitpick too much. Overall, a decent very low budget film and one that has an unfairly low score.

They don't make 'em like this anymore...

What a blast from the past! Other reviewers have mentioned the plot so I won't repeat it here. What makes the film so fascinating is the '60s styles, the garish colors, the lounge-music soundtrack, Tacey Robbins' singing, the wild go-go dancers...We even see the director, the infamous Al Adamson, playing Travis, the ill-fated robber! Like many of Adamson's films, this one is like a car wreck-- you don't want to stare but you just can't help it. I find it amazing that a director could put this together for a mere $2,000-- alas, those days are gone forever. A real treat for B-movie fans!

At least it's not "Monster a go go"

And here I was thinking all movies from the 60's that ended in "a go go" had to be terrible. I was wrong."Psycho a go go" is a very underrated gangster-horror flick that definitely deserves better than an average of 2.1 on IMDb. It definitely looks very artistic at times, for example, the scene where the killer strangles the girl in a hotel while the neon lights lighten the scene.(This is probably due to expert cinematography from Vilmos Zsigmond). Also, I'm sure this couldn't have been the inspiration for "The Shining" ,because I'm sure only a handful of people have seen this, but the scene at the end where(spoilers, I guess) the killer chases the little girl and her mother through the snow and the end scene from "The Shining" are eerily similar. All in all, this could have been a more well known picture today if the film was cleaned up a bit, had its draggy scenes removed, had the cheesy bullet sounds taken away, and maybe had a more competent director.

Pretend you're at a Drive-In

I'm Tacey Robbins' cousin, but that isn't the reason I'm giving this movie the highest rating I can. It compares very favorably to Drive-In type movies of the same era, and was filmed on about one-tenth the budget. It's fun to watch on a number of levels: A great look at mid-1960's culture, a pretty good thriller-type story line, and Tacey Robbins' great voice. And she's pretty easy on the eyes, too! People interested in seeing this movie should be aware that John Carradine does not appear in it. Bits and pieces of "Psycho-A-Go-Go" were cannibalized over the years and randomly spliced into several other movies. This film was, in fact, lost completely until the company Troma took the trouble to edit it back to what it looked like when originally released in 1965.

A way under-rated movie, if ever there was one. I found it so exciting and terrifyingly suspenseful, that I watched it twice! The demented killer would have to be one of the ugliest and most terrifying ever! And the rest of the players - even the little girl - give outstandingly realistic performances.

I even liked the musical numbers as they were not only very 1960s in style and presentation, as well as nice and jumpy and pleasing in themselves, but this nightclub scene allowed us to settle in with the very realistic characters (notice how well dressed the singers and the band and the background dancers were - not sloppy like today's so- called entertainers) and absorb their backgrounds, their hopes, their dreams. All the villains - not only the psycho - were both terrifying and realistic. And the climax in the snow is a real tour-de-force, if ever there was one! It had me sitting on the edge of my seat!
