Following the death of Rackal, Teles taps a man named Drake to deal with the threat the Rugger Guard poses. Drake's plan is to lure them into a dangerous area of space where several black holes converge. It is funnel shaped, gradually becoming narrower and denser towards the center. Meanwhile, Keats has an uneasy feeling of what lies ahead of the Rugger fleet, and sure enough, the space anomaly appears in front of them. They receive a distress signal emanating from it, and the Sea Team is sent to investigate, not knowing they are flying into a trap.

The Rugger Guard encounters a binary planet system, and a fleet of "ghost" ships orbit around on one of them. The Rugger Team deploys to investigate the fleet, which promptly flees. They then proceed to survey to the two planets; one is barren, the other is similar to Earth. The Rugger Guard performs a water-landing on the Earth-like planet, and are attacked from above by a Galveston fleet. Rugger Guard attempts to takeoff, but is forced to land again due to enemy fire. The ghost fleet returns, landing directly in front of Rugger Guard , and opens fire. They've been caught in an elaborate trap.

Unfortunately, Galveston forces are again lying in wait nearby, waiting for the moment to strike.
