Watching The Divine Order made me laugh and yet I know it was such a serious subject. To think that women not only could not vote in Switzerland until 1971, but “they were not allowed to open a bank account until 1988. They couldn’t sign contracts for an apartment. That’s one of the first things that women took on after the right to vote, they really said, we need to change marital law, ” Petra Volpe told me as we spoke over coffee at Alfred on Melrose Place today.
“You laugh because it’s so horrible,” says Volpe, “and you can also see at the moment how important comedy is in America because you derive some kind of solace from it…I love movies that make me cry and laugh at the same time and I think humor is a very powerful tool to seduce people to come to the cinema and to open their hearts.

Out yesterday was Angel Catbird: To Castle Catula Vol. 2. Now, you might recall that I mentioned this series once. Ok, twice. Well, maybe three times. Ok, I may have gone overboard. In case you forgot, the Angel Catbird series is by the genius writer Margaret Atwood, who is behind the ever-relevant The Handmaid’s Tale and fantabulous artist Johnnie Christmas.
At this point in the story, Strig (a.k.a. Angel Catbird) and his friends are moving to regroup at Catula’s castle (hence the title). As they walk, they tell stories about their past, and meet up with some new friends. We also get to see the dastardly plans of the evil Dr. Muroid and his rat army.
The pulpy nature of this story just makes you feel good when you read it. Plus, it gave me a great opportunity to use the word “dastardly” to boot. It’s got its own dark moments,...

Alexander Skarsgård and Michael Peña play detective partners applying misanthropic poetic licence to the line of duty
This abrasive cop comedy is the cinematic equivalent of spending time with a very charming psychopath. You laugh a lot, but there’s always the chance you might get an unexpected headbutt during the course of the evening. The third film from John Michael McDonagh (The Guard, Calvary) is bitingly funny and unapologetically offensive. Terry Monroe (Alexander Skarsgård) and Bob Bolaño (Michael Peña) are a pair of New Mexico policemen who bring their own unique interpretation of justice to the job. But when the two most corrupt cops in the state take on the most unsavoury criminal in town, they find themselves out of their depth. The always excellent Peña is well suited to the role – he already partnered in a similar, if less dissolute, dynamic in End of Watch. Swedish heartthrob Skarsgård...

I’m not a typical film critic; in fact, I’m not a film critic at all. I’m a sociologist that studies fear with a fondness for horror films. What I love to talk about is the ways in which horror movies, in this case The Purge: Election Year, hold a mirror up to society, reflecting both our fears and our secret (or not so secret) desires.
There is no guesswork required in Election Year; this is no funhouse mirror, but rather a pretty direct reflection of where we are today. Election Year picks up where Anarchy left off, with growing opposition to the Purge: on the pro-Purge side we have a Christian minister backed by the New Founding Fathers (and a super creepy bishop), and on the other side a career politician (who happens to be female, white, and blonde) that wants the Purge gone for good...

‘Tickled’ Doc Creator Involved In Heated Confrontation With Film’s Subjects At L.A. Premiere — Watch
Friday night’s high-energy premiere of “Tickled” in Los Angeles had two very upset attendees. During the Q&A, and afterwards in the lobby of the Nuart Theatre, co-director Dylan Reeve was confronted by David D’Amato and Kevin Clarke, two of the documentary’s subjects, accusing the filmmaker of being a liar and using recorded information that they had previously agreed not to.
The film follows co-director David Farrier, a journalist who stumbles upon a mysterious tickling competition online. As he digs deeper into the sport of “competitive endurance tickling,” he finds a bizarre world he believes to be controlled by nefarious forces.

Eli Roth returns to the big screen with the Keanu Reeves-headlined Knock Knock. Wil looks back at his impact on horror...
It’s 13 years since Eli Roth made his debut with the grisly, inventive virus thriller Cabin Fever. And despite only directing four other full features since then — the latest of which, Knock Knock, is about to be released on June 26th — he’s made an indelible mark, a gory, bloody mark, on American horror cinema.
He’s one of that rare breed of directors, like a Scorsese or a Tarantino or a Hitchcock, that you know what they look and sound like. That aren’t just names behind a camera, but faces in other people’s movies, chat show guests, and have celebrity other halves. It doesn’t always mean that they are a great filmmaker, but it usually means that they are far more than just a person with technical skill.

This week Amy Nicholson posted an essay titled “Stop Laughing At Old Movies, You $@%&ing Hipsters,” followed by a response / continuation from Sam Adams, titled “When You Laugh at Old Movies the Joke Is on You.” Both writers take a similar stance, criticizing individuals who watch old films and laugh at moments never intended as comedy (rear projection, artificial set pieces, etc).
I too have seen plenty of this behaviour, yet I fail to see it as problematic, nor do I feel the need to exert my own “superiority” (to employ a word they both use) over these types of viewers. Having spent much of my adult life reading about film, writing about film, and watching anything I have access to, I think it is safe to say I am a proud cinephile. You wouldn’t think Björk would come up during a panel discussion about Mad Men, but that’s just what happened at the Film Independent at “Lacma: A Tribute to Mad Men,” when Matthew Weiner and Jon Hamm chatted about the season-five finale episode “The Phantom.” The episode ends with Nancy Sinatra’s “You Only Live Twice” playing over a gorgeous tracking shot. The song became a hit when the Nancy Sinatra version was used in the 1967 James Bond film of the same name. Weiner noted that he almost used Björk’s cover of the song in the season-one pilot, and when the audience laughed at this notion, he said, “You can laugh. It’s amazing.” Jon Hamm quickly jumped in: “Björk was originally going to be Peggy. "To start out with a message from First Lady Michelle Obama and Oprah literally brought me to tears. And then to have Gayle [King] here and gift the whole audience with Oprah's things..."
Fans will remember that nearly a decade ago Oprah helped turn Rachael Ray into a...

Stars from Tommy Wiseau's infamous 2003 film The Room have launched plans to make a new mockumentary.
The Room has become a cult hit over the past decade, becoming known as the 'Citizen Kane of bad movies'.
Robyn Paris - who played the character Michelle in the original film - has created a Kickstarter campaign for a film about their lives since making the 'so bad it's good' film.
She wrote: "12 years ago, a group of struggling actors (us!) accepted roles a film called The Room. We knew it wouldn't win any awards. But we had no idea that it would... become a cult hit (and a complete joke).
"But when the world is laughing at you, what do you do?...You laugh right along with them. And that's why we're coming to You, the fans."

The first thing you notice when you peer tentatively into a serene botanic garden is a pair of wedding crashers doing cartwheels in the buff. “I heard there was a naked wedding,” one of them tells a guest, “and I was like, ‘I’m going to be there.’” Funny, you thought the same thing when VH1 announced that Dating Naked—the only show on TV that features love-seeking singles (and/or one-night grandstanders) throwing caution and clothing to the wind—would film the nude nuptials of two contestants. You read that right: a brave couple were going to exchange vows...

A review of "The Devil, Probably" by Mireille Latil-Le-Dantec. Originally published in Issue 77, July-August 1977, of Cinématographe. Translation by Ted Fendt. Thanks to Marie-Pierre Duhamel.
"I challenge you all now, all you atheists. With what will you save the world, and where have you found a normal line of progress for it, you men of science, of co-operation, of labour-wage, and all the rest of it?
With credit? What's credit? Where will credit take you? [...] Without recognizing any moral basis except the satisfaction of individual egoism and material necessity! [...] It's a law, that's true; but it's no more normal than the law of destruction, or even self-destruction. [...] Yes, sir, the law of self-destruction and the law of self-preservation are equally strong in humanity! The devil has equal dominion over humanity till the limit of time which we know not. You laugh? You don't believe in the devil? Disbelief in the devil is a French idea,...

I feel the need to climb to the top of a mountain and shout at the top of my lungs to watch Legit on Fxx before it falls victim as another show worth your time that couldn’t find its audience in time. It’s smart, edgy, and sweet and comedies like this are few and far between.
Legit isn’t your typical comedy. Standup comedian, Jim Jefferies is trying to do something different, and bring his own sensibilities to the TV comedy realm. “When you’re with your friends,” he explains. “You laugh a little bit, you laugh a little bit, and then something big happens. I think a lot of network sitcoms it’s just laughs per minute. I don’t think they even care how big the laughs are. As long as they can pack so many into that timeline. We have episodes where there’s maybe five,...

Rob Ford wants you to know he’s going to the gym.
Matt Lauer interviewed Ford on the Today show this morning to see how Toronto’s infamous mayor is doing. Ford appeared on the Today show just a few months ago, when Lauer traveled to Toronto to chat with Ford after most of his mayoral powers were stripped. (A crack-cocaine scandal will do that). There, Ford issued Lauer a challenge: “I invite you to come back, give me five or six months, and if you don’t see a difference, I’ll eat my words.”

A bonafide satire of the Obama age, writer-director Justin Simien's persistently funny "Dear White People" perceptively skewers virtually every facet of racial confusion in modern American society. While black comedians like Dave Chapelle and Chris Rock have provided searing insight into the absurdities of lingering racial tensions, Simien consolidates much about the paradoxes explored in those acts and many others into a wildly enjoyable and scathing farce. By exploring the heated debates between white and black students at an upscale college, Simmien both mocks and provokes the nature of our seemingly progressive times by illuminating misguided assumptions and fears embedded in forward-thinking discourse. But Simien's relentless screenplay is never too self-serious or didactic, instead pairing culturally-savvy brains with a goofy grin. For the average person working a 9-to-5 job, the lives of struggling artists can be difficult to relate to. In Cutie and the Boxer, first time director Zachary Heinzerling gives us a fantastic insight into the lives of two ageing Japanese artists living in New York and we were delighted to speak to him and gain an even stronger understanding of the couple’s highs and lows.
The film – out in cinemas on November 1st – blends documentary and narrative styles to tell the story of Ushio and Noriko Shinohara. Ushio is relatively famous in America as well as his native Japan, but is still struggling to make money. The film truly succeeds though when it begins to focus more on his wife and begins animating her work to tell the story.
Congratulations on completing your first feature, how differently is the film being received by audiences in the UK and abroad?...

The Great Superhero War of 2014 officially began this week. Mere days after the Marvel Studios assembly line released the trailer for next year’s intriguing Captain America sequel-slash-shield spinoff, 20th Century Fox just debuted the first complete teaser for X-Men: Days of Future Past, the franchise-binding sequel-prequel. Running just a little over two minutes, the Future Past trailer features the return of pretty much every X-actor whose name doesn’t rhyme with Mames Jarsden, while also spotlighting some new faces. The result looks like it could either be the Ocean’s Eleven of superhero movies or the Love Actually of superhero movies,...

Christmas movies come in two forms: happy, nostalgic celebrations of the season’s glad tidings and sour, caustic takedowns of the holiday’s forced warmth and merriment. All Is Bright is decidedly in the latter category. Its title a feint, All Is Bright submerges itself in melancholy, casting a compassionate eye over characters laid low by disappointing life choices that are amplified by the oncoming rush of Christmastime cheer. You laugh neither with nor at these people—you just hang on and hope their depression doesn’t bring you down with them....

Seth MacFarlane makes cartoons about dumb guys. That’s his job, and he’s done it so well with clueless buffoons like Peter Griffin that Family Guy has become one of the top-rated shows on Fox. So why is his latest pilot, Dads, which he created alongside fellow Family Guy producers Alec Sulkin and Wellesley Wild, inspiring so much outrage over its “racist” humor that one watchdog group is calling for Fox to reshoot the pilot?
So far, Fox is standing behind Dads, despite the controversy. The pilot has already been sent out to critics, including EW, and although some...

We all enjoy a funny movie – that’s a given – and the most essential part of any funny movie is, of course, funny characters.
The plot of a movie can be funny on paper, but without a good comedic actor bringing the supposedly funny characters to life it just isn’t going to raise any laughs.
Some funny movies and characters bring the laughs economically – and that’s great – but some characters are just so funny that you find yourself laughing whenever they’re on screen.
Funniness can come in many forms; Ineptness, zaniness, exaggeration, ignorance, childishness, stupidity, harshness, vulgarity, sarcasm, wittiness, a funny appearance… I could go on. This list covers all of those traits and more.
Here are 10 hilarious movie characters who make you laugh in every scene…
10. Steve Stifler (American Pie)
Steve ‘The Stifmeister’ Stifler (Seann William Scott) is the deuteragonist of the American Pie series of films.

Jason Mewes is best known to the world as the Jay in Jay and Silent Bob. A fixture in Kevin Smith films, Jason usually plays the stereotypical stoner kid. In his new project, “Vigilante Diaries,” Jason goes in a different direction. In this web series he produces and stars in, Jason plays a documentary filmmaker who gets drawn into the world of vigilante justice. We chatted with Jason about his new action-hero role, and of course, grilled him for details on Clerks 3.
Tell me about these “Vigilante Diaries.”
“Vigilante Diaries” is a web series my buddy Paul [Sloan] wrote and created. It’s about a dude named Mike Hanover - which is the guy I play - he likes making documentaries and shooting and editing... like the guy who made Girls Gone Wild. That style. Not necessarily because he did the same thing, but because he had success with doing his own thing with the camera,...

He’s been a busy boy as of late, and Conan O’Brien weighed in on the news that Jimmy Fallon will take over for Jay Leno as host of “The Tonight Show” in Spring 2014.
During last night’s (April 3) “Conan,” the red-headed wonder, who hosted the program himself for a short time, offered props to the former “Saturday Night Live” stud.
O’Brien noted, “I want to congratulate Jimmy. That is a really fun gig. You laugh, but it really is. Jimmy is the perfect guy to do it. He’s going to do a fantastic job. So congratulations Jimmy.”
In related news, Conan made an impromptu appearance on “Chelsea Lately” as well, stepping into the shower in his birthday suit.
Confronting a naked Chelsea Handler, O’Brien accused her of ganking his studio, parking space, and back massager- "This is my studio—you stole it, remember? Plus, I still have the key.

Conan O'Brien had nothing but good wishes for Jimmy Fallon after NBC named the latter to replace Jay Leno as host of The Tonight Show next year. Despite being forced out of his dream job two years ago when Leno decided to reclaim his late-night time slot, the flame-haired funnyman briefly addressed the peacock's succession plans a half-hour into Wednesday night's episode of his namesake TBS show. This is 40 follows former Knocked Up peripheral characters Debbie (Leslie Mann) and Pete (Paul Rudd) as they struggle through the various trials and tribulations of married life, many of which conveniently fit into montages set to Paul McCartney music. Though the film starts out with some incredibly clever humor, the 134-minute running time made it gradually feel less like a “slice of life” comedy and more like a 2-hour and 15 minute long Greyhound bus ride where your seat mate tells you all about his latest trip to the proctologist and every so often throws in a zinger about how the doctor’s finger didn’t even have the decency to call him back the next day. You laugh heartily at first, but eventually just throw in a “ha” to be polite and by the end you’re kind of annoyed and you really have to go to the bathroom.
