Lobstrosities is a Patreon-only segment of The Losers’ Club that journeys into the barren wastelands of Stephen King movies and sequels. In the past, they’ve covered Pet Sematary 2, Creepshow 3, A Return to ‘Salem’s Lot, every sequel to Sometimes They Come Back, and a third of the Corn franchise. Today, in light of its 25th anniversary, the gang is unlocking their 2020 installment on the 1999 sequel, The Rage: Carrie 2.
Directed by Katt Shea, the direct sequel to Brian De Palma‘s Carrie follows Rachel Lang (Emily Bergl), the younger, also-telekinetic half-sister of Carrie White, who learns that her best friend’s suicide was prompted by a group of dickhead male classmates who exploited her sexually. The film brings back Amy Irving as Sue Snell and stuffs enough connective tissue between the cracks to make this whole thing work as a sequel.

If there’s ever been a classic horror film that doesn’t need a sequel, it’s Carrie. Stephen King’s debut novel was masterfully adapted into a 1976 film by Brian De Palma and quickly became a runaway hit. In fact it’s likely because of the film’s success that the prolific author so quickly became a household name. Published in 1974, the semi-epistolary novel follows Carrie White, a high school senior who’s spent her life taking abuse from her ultra-religious mother and savage classmates. Finally pushed too far, Carrie unleashes her telekinetic power with a fiery vengeance that lays waste to the cruel and kind alike. De Palma faithfully adapted King’s original novel to create a terrifying exploration of long-term abuse and self-defense gone terribly wrong. The image of Carrie (Sissy Spacek) covered in blood as she walks through a burning prom has become an indelible image...

Stephen King's books are frequently adapted into successful movies, but Hollywood often expands on the worlds King has created with original sequels that are bizarre or poorly written. One of the worst examples are the "Children of the Corn" movies, which mushroomed from an adaptation of King's single short story into a hackneyed 11-film saga. Likewise, films such as "Return to Salem's Lot" and "Pet Sematary" use Stephen King's name and established concepts to lure audiences in, but they pale in comparison to his prolific originals.
One of the exceptions to the rule is "The Rage: Carrie 2." Initially called "The Curse," Rafael Moreu's screenplay had nothing to do with Stephen King's masterful debut, but then shoehorned elements of Carrie White lore into the storyline (via Fangoria). The protagonist, Rachel Lang, is Carrie's secret half-sister and shares her telekinetic abilities. However, she is not as much of a social pariah as Carrie White,...

The horror genre is one that frequently insists upon sequels and franchises, even when they’re woefully misguided endeavors. There are too many sequels that are set up to fail and seem financially driven and creatively bankrupt, whether it’s Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2, The Rage: Carrie 2, or American Psycho II: All American Girl. However, it’s always electric when one of these sequels does something special, different, and audiences are left with a Psycho II or The Exorcist III scenario on their hands. The Fly II is a horror sequel that was largely written off the moment that it was announced, sans David Cronenberg, even if its existence makes sense. The Fly II isn’t superior to its predecessor, but it does excel in many areas that are absent in the original. It brings something new to the table and marks a unique voice in body...

In January of 1999, two teen movies opened back to back and kicked off what would be one of the most extraordinary years for youth-oriented movies in the history of Hollywood. Both were No. 1 at the box office their first weekend. Both boasted remarkable casts of rising stars — they even shared a star in Paul Walker. And both whipped ancient genre conventions into new combinations that made them fresh and new. Yet for all their similarities, “Varsity Blues” and “She’s All That” couldn’t have been more different: one an R-rated sports drama that tempered its inspirational coming-of-age drama with surprisingly harsh depictions of misogyny and physical and mental abuse, the other a sweet, good-natured romantic comedy nearly as innocent as a Mickey Rooney-Judy Garland vehicle from the 1940s. In their similarities and differences lies the key to why 1999 was such a great year for movies of their type — the 1939 of teen movies.

According to a biography on Stephen King's website, the famous author's first short story was published in 1967 in an anthology paper called Startling Mystery Stories. His story was called "The Glass Floor," and King was only 18 years old. It was the first step in a decades-long literary career of overwhelming success, leading to 65 novels, 200 short stories, and dozens of feature film adaptations.
King's first major hit novel came in 1974 with the publication of "Carrie," a story about a repressed, abused teenage girl who finds that she may be developing psychic powers. Given how cruelly the world treats Carrie White, and how little her religious zealot mother wants to talk to her, an explosive, murderous conclusion was inevitable.
"Carrie" was adapted to the big screen in 1976 (seen above) by director Brian De Palma and screenwriter Lawrence D. Cohen, and it's one of the best adaptations of King's material. The film...

High school is hell for people like Jenna Dewan’s put-upon character in the 2006 horror movie Tamara. The pathetic namesake doesn’t have any friends to call her own, and she spends most of her time daydreaming about her hunky teacher when she’s not playing with the dark arts. Now, Tamara thinks her life is finally starting to improve when her crush comes a-calling, but as things tend to go in these kinds of movies, the sudden attention isn’t real. No, someone is out to humiliate her. And like other wronged women in the horror genre, Tamara won’t rest until she gets her revenge.
Before Tamara Riley takes the stage as a violent vixen from beyond the grave, Dewan plays a smart yet frequently bullied girl at Hafton High School. The performance is convincing, quickly endearing her to viewers. Director Jeremy Haft’s movie then goes down...

It’s a difficult world out there, so once in a while it sure is nice to just sit down with the family to watch a wholesome movie about a wholesome man, his wholesome dog, and their tireless, never-ending hunt for human corpses.
“Rescued By Ruby” has all the feel-good warmth of a G-rated kids flick, with bright and colorful cinematography and a musical score which probably has compositions called “Let’s Hug It Out” or something similar. But it’s the tale of a state trooper named Dan, whose biggest dream is to join the police K-9 division, which involves, once again, more searching for human remains than we’re typically used to in a family flick.
That’s not to say that “Rescued By Ruby” is in any way dire or inappropriate, but whenever the screenplay by Karen Janszen (“Dolphin Tale”) acknowledges the harsher realities of K-9 police...

A limited series remake of Stephen King’s “Carrie” is in the early stages of development at FX, an individual with knowledge of the project told TheWrap.
The series, which would be the third adaptation of the classic horror novel, currently has no writer attached.
“Carrie” would join fellow upcoming Stephen King adaptations including HBO’s “The Outsider,” Epix’s “Jerusalem’s Lot” (which stars Adrian Brody) and CBS All Access’ “The Stand.” Hulu just wrapped the second season of “Castle Rock,” which is an amalgam of King stories. On the big screen, both “Doctor Sleep” (King’s sequel to “The Shining”) and “It: Chapter 2” were released within the past few months.

The fact that high school can be hell sometimes is something that spans generations, and perhaps that is why Stephen King's Carrie seems to be one of his most enduring works. The tale of telekinetic Carrie White could come to life on screen once again, as a limited series adaptation of the 1974 novel is in the early stages of development.
Collider's Jeff Sneider reports that a new limited series version of King's Carrie is in the works at FX and MGM Television. While FX and MGM TV have yet to confirm the report, Collider reveals that "...telekinetic teen Carrie White will likely be played by either a trans performer or an actress of color rather than a cis white woman, as in past adaptations."
Carrie has previously been adapted as a film in 1976, 2002, and 2013, with a sequel, The Rage: Carrie 2, released in 1999.

Released 40 years ago today, Brian De Palma’s 1976 adaptation of Stephen King’s debut novel Carrie remains a masterpiece of modern horror. It is a teenage pop nightmare of a film, a dreamy exploration of horrors both real and supernatural. Expertly directed, gorgeously photographed and acted with total sincerity by a cast of then-newcomers, it remains one of the very best King adaptations despite being first out of the gate.
Know how I know De Palma’s Carrie is a brilliant adaptation and one of the best horror movies ever made? Because other filmmakers have tried adapting it three other times across three other decades: Katt Shea in 1999 (with The Rage: Carrie 2, basically a Carrie remake and the best of the lot), David Carson for SyFy in 2002 and, most recently, Kimberly Pierce in 2013. None of them come close to touching the 1976 original.

Given some distance and the perspective of time, almost every horror film seems to look better and find its audience. Though the early to mid 1990s have long been considered a particularly bad period for American horror movies, recent years have seen a number of titles being reassessed and opinions on them revised to be much more favorable than they were 20 years ago. Titles like Disturbing Behavior and I Know What You Did Last Summer and The Rage: Carrie 2, largely written off by horror fans during their theatrical releases in the ’90s, are now being talked about as secretly good genre efforts not because the movies have actually improved, but because enough time has passed that the films can be removed from their historical context and taken for what they are.
Of course, some ’90s titles were always secretly good; they only needed some time to find their audience.

Does Hollywood try to remake/sequelize/franchise-extend every single one of its successful movies? Sometimes it feels that way, but there’s a little more nuance to studio practices than that. If you’re looking for meaning in this summer’s blockbuster season – not always easy – you could call it Dr. JurassicMax or How Hollywood Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Reboot. Rebooting franchises isn’t as common, well-received, or lucrative as you might think. Today let’s look briefly at the history of the reboot – and how this summer changed it.
First, what technically counts as a reboot? One school would say that anytime the cast shuffles, it’s a reboot, meaning we’re now on the second reboot (and third iteration) of Spider-Man films. That’s pretty rare; far more often, duration between films is the deciding factor, and it just doesn’t feel right to slap...

Could anyone have guessed when Stephen King published his first novel Carrie in 1974 that it would spawn no fewer than four big screen adaptations? Brian De Palma’s 1976 version remains the first and best, but each subsequent filmmaker who comes at the material seeks to find something new and unexplored in King’s book. Of the two remakes and one sequel released in the last 16 years, only one movie has succeeded in being different enough to justify its own existence. It’s The Rage: Carrie 2, and it’s being packaged with the 2002 made-for-tv remake on a new double feature Blu-ray from Scream Factory.
By now you already know the story of Carrie White, a shy and awkward teenage girl raised by a religious zealot mother and possessing some major telekinetic abilities. When some kids at school decide play a big, bloody prank on her the prom, Carrie retaliates with...

Sequels are rarely more random and less asked-for than The Rage: Carrie 2. It’s a fair question, and I’m not sure the…

Sometimes, high school can be a virtual hell. Mileage varies by the individual, of course, but in a place where acceptance at a lunch table can be akin to finding an oasis in a desert, there's more weight on the shoulders of many teens than just their backpack straps. Such is the case for Ewen High School student Carrie White, the telekinetic titular character of Stephen King's seminal debut novel published in 1974.
Carrie has been adapted for the screen multiple times for multiple generations, and Scream Factory is giving the Generation Y versions a high-definition upgrade, with their Carrie and The Rage: Carrie 2 double feature Blu-ray now set to hit shelves with an official release date and bonus features, including two new audio commentaries.

If you think a lot of people have been questioning the point of (another) Carrie remake, then imagine what those crazy little voices were saying in 1999 when The Rage: Carrie 2 opened in theaters. A sequel to Carrie that Stephen King wasn’t involved with coming 23 years after the original film? Huh?
The 1999 sequel introduced us to Carrie’s teenage half-sister Rachel (Emily Bergl), another tormented teen with psychic powers. Since this isn’t a sequel to Zapped, suffice to say she uses those powers to eliminate some high school punks, in particular “Home Improvement” son Zachery Ty Bryan.
“Crazy Little Voices” by the alternative metal band Ra is the lead track on the soundtrack album that is billed as “Music from and Inspired by the Motion Picture The Rage: Carrie 2.” What that essentially means is that maybe two or three songs on this soundtrack were actually played in the film,...

If there’s any lasting cultural impact to this latest film adaptation of Stephen King’s “Carrie,” it’s that it confirms the material’s status as an archetypal mythos. Like the Passion Play and “A Christmas Carol,” this is the kind of engrained fable that gets told over and over again, even when almost everyone in the audience knows every beat of the plot. The story has become a touchstone to generations of misfits and outsiders; in between its two big-screen versions, it spawned a movie sequel (“The Rage: Carrie 2”), a small-screen adaptation written by Bryan Fuller (“Hannibal”) and even an infamous.

Carrie
Directed by Brian De Palma
Written by Lawrence D. Cohen
USA, 1976
This classic horror movie based on Stephen King’s first novel, about a pubescent girl with telekinetic powers, remains Brian De Palma’s best film. Sissy Spacek stars as Carrie White, a shy, mousy teenager who is the victim of both her evangelical mother, Margaret (Piper Laurie), and of her cruel high school classmates, who bully her constantly. Her mom shelters Carrie in a closed-off, claustrophobic household, due to her psychotic fear of sexuality and twisted religious beliefs. She punishes the girl repeatedly, and prohibits her to develop friendships with other teens. As a result of ignorance and religious guilt, Carrie remains shunned by society, and viewed as an outsider who is the butt of practical jokes. When the school’s popular girl, Chris Hargenson (Nancy Allen) organizes a wicked prank at the school prom, Carrie lashes out in a horrifying manner,...

Don’t Snatch This Mixed Bag
Irish director Jon Wright seems content spoon feeding audiences with derivative genre efforts, or at least one could surmise after his sophomore feature, Grabbers is bestowed upon audiences. Wright’s 2009 debut, Tormented, was about a bullied teen come back from the dead to slaughter his posh UK prep school torturers, which had about as much finesse as 1999’s The Rage: Carrie 2. And now, we’re treated to an Irish creature feature about alien cephalopod’s intent on sucking blood. Intentionally goofy, and drearily written, your reception of the film will all depend on how high you set your stakes. Think Tremors (1990) was a classic? Maybe you’ll enjoy this tired flick.
Richard Coyle stars as Garda Ciaran O’Shea, a notorious drunkard, who has to be babysat by a substitute Garda, Lisa Nolan (Ruth Bradley) when his boss has to take a two-week trip.

While I was on my extended drive to Strongsville, Oh for Cinema Wasteland, the Carrie trailer hit online. This new adaptation of the Stephen King novel is directed by Kimberly Pierce and stars Chloe Grace Moretz and Julianne Moore. Given the talent involved, I was interested in this. However, judging by this trailer, it looks like there isn’t anything new being brought to the table other than a modern telling of the story. Before I dig into it, let’s watch the trailer.
So, that was that huh?
De Palma’s Carrie was a great, unapologetic portrait of teenagers and how they can push one of their peers to the edge. While there could still be an inkling of that in Pierce’s film, a director who I think was a good choice, I don’t see it anywhere in here. What I see here is what I saw...

Catching the "Carrie" remake in theaters would've been a terrifyingly awesome solution to end a lame night at the prom, but sorry, high schoolers—it looks like Sony Pictures has decided to put its box office faith in the spirit of Halloween over the fabled spring dance.
ComingSoon.net reports that in the midst of shuffling release dates for its upcoming films, the studio has bumped Kimberly Peirce's remake of the cult classic from March 15 to October 18, making it a seven-month delay until you'll be able to see the updated blood-drenched prom dress. Sony didn't cite any specific reasons for the move, but it's easy to assume that it was made to satisfy audiences hungry for a fright-night flick on Halloween.

One remake, other than Evil Dead, that I was looking forward to was Kim Peirce’s adaptation of Stephen King’s Carrie. With the casting of Chloë Grace Moretz and the fact that Julianne Moore is playing Carrie’s mom, Carrie seems like it could be a highlight of the 2013 horror season. Sadly, news came in that we will have to wait a little while longer in order to see it. Sure, you could watch De Palma’s film or even the tv version with Angela Bettis or, for shits and giggles, even 90′s teen angsty The Rage: Carrie 2 to try and tide you over but I’m sure you have seen those before.

Kimberly Peirce's Carrie remake featuring Chloë Moretz and Julianne Moore has been bumped seven months back from its March release. "No reason was given for the move, but we can only guess that it's probably a combination of time given to get the FX in order and also to allow the movie to hit theaters when audiences are looking for a good scare," Indiewire writes. Use the delay to track down The Rage: Carrie 2 and reset the quality bar so you can enjoy this remake no matter what.

36 years later, you still don't make fun of Carrie.
Brian De Palma's 1976 adaptation of Carrie is widely regarded as one of the classics of the horror genre, which begs the question of why anyone would want to remake it, which already happened once in a 2002 TV movie, or make a sequel out of it, which sadly happened in 1999's The Rage: Carrie 2. Next year, a second Carrie remake will open in theaters, but, as titular star Chloe Grace Moretz (Dark Shadows, Kick-Ass) revealed in April, this remake will be "very different" from the original. While it will still be ostensibly based on Stephen King's 1974 novel of the same name, the remake has been updated to modern times and, according to Moretz, will be a "darker" version that will focus more on the relationship between Carrie and her mother (Julianne Moore).
