When it was announced in March that Stephen King's classic horror novel Misery was getting the Broadway treatment, Elizabeth Marvel was intended to play the juicy role of number-one fan and number-one torturous motivator Annie Wilkes on stage. Due to House of Cards commitments, however, Marvel has left the project and Laurie Metcalf has joined it in her place.
Variety reports that Laurie Metcalf will play Annie Wilkes in the Misery Broadway play. Widely known for her stellar turn as Jackie Harris on Roseanne in addition to a plethora of other TV and film credits, Metcalf is perhaps best known to horror fans for her intense, unflinching portrayal as Mrs. Loomis in Scream 2.
As Wilkes, Metcalf will inflict pain on author Paul Sheldon, played by Bruce Willis in his Broadway debut. Metcalf is no stranger to the stage, having performed both off Broadway in Domesticated and on Broadway in The Other Place.

Number one fans can be flattering, but Annie Wilkes comes on a little too strong, and Bruce Willis is about to find out just how strong when he makes his Broadway debut in Warner Bros. Theatre Ventures' stage adaptation of one of Stephen King's most chilling novels: Misery.
The Hollywood Reporter reveals that Bruce Willis will star as author Paul Sheldon opposite Elizabeth Marvel (Other Desert Cities, House Of Cards) as Annie Wilkes in Misery, the Broadway adaptation of the classic 1987 novel that was adapted to film in 1990 by Rob Reiner. The play is scribed by William Goldman (The Princess Bride, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid), who also penned the screenplay for the film adaptation. The stage version of Misery made its world premiere in the fall of 2012 at Bucks County Playhouse.

Castle continues to tick the geek scorecards this week, with nods to The X-Files, Terminator, Twelve Monkeys and Doctor Who...
This review contains spoilers.
6.5 Time Will Tell
The makeup of Castle and Beckett’s relationship is much like that of Mulder and Scully. That is, Mulder wants to believe so badly that he’ll dismiss more mundane explanations of strange phenomena while Scully, conversely, will stick to those explanations when it’s clear they simply cannot account for what she’s seeing with her own eyes. Castle, less seriously than Mulder but no less willing to believe, will likewise start with the most extreme narrative that will account for the evidence before him, and Beckett shoots holes in all his theories by insisting on more pedestrian reasons for the crimes they investigate. This week’s episode seemed written to highlight just how close Castle...

That sound you heard at the end of this week’s Castle? That was a shared sigh of relief when we found out that Andrew Marlowe was done torturing us, at least for a while. Because this week was classic Castle.
Beckett may be out of work and out of sorts, but it seems to have had no effect on her relationship with Castle. “I don’t know what to do,” she laments. “ ”I’ve got some ideas,” Castle quips. Cute. But the conversation is a serious one and sets up a potential point of conflict between the two: Beckett has always made her own way in the world and found herself in and through her work. Unemployed, she’s adrift. But as Castle begins to intimate,...

Richard Castle met his "Number One Fan" this week and she even managed to dot the i in Writer... with a bullet to his vest.

It took Richard Castle's "Number One Fan" to set things right once again at the 12th precinct - and I couldn't be happier.
So let's start at the beginning…
Just as I had hoped, Kate Beckett was in an emotional free fall after her firing from the FBI. She was even floundering around in Castle's bed, lamenting her options since the NYPD refused to let her back in due to a hiring freeze.
Kate: What am I going to do, just sleep in every morning and screw around till the phone rings? What kind of life is that?
Castle: Mine. | permalink
And you can't say Castle doesn't make it look good. But how about a whole new theme for Castle season 6? Kate Beckett: Mall Cop. Probably not, but Beckett's probably the only woman in the world who could rock that uniform.
Moving on…
The loft has gotten way too cozy.

Below, our Round Table team of TV Fanatics Chandel Charles, Jim Garner, and Christine Orlando are joined by Jennifer from the Castle fan forum The 12th as we find out who was surprised by how Beckett and the FBI parted ways and how difficult they think it should be for her to head back to the 12th.

What was your favorite scene from the episode?
Chandel: Probably the opening sequence with Beckett and Castle FaceTime-ing. It reminded me of my boyfriend and I Skyping when I was still in college, so I identified with the sentiment and the feeling that it just wasn't enough!
Jim: I loved Rick finally stating that he could write from anywhere and got an apartment in DC. The look on Kate's face was priceless!

The latest Castle was all about who had the greatest "Need to Know" and who got left out in the cold. And the final results were not nearly what I expected.
Rick and Kate looked incredibly cozy laying in bed... hundreds of miles apart. How can these two still look so darn adorable even when they're not sharing the same space?!? Even their virtual kiss, which in lesser hands would have been nothing but cheesy, made me smile.
Unfortunately, Pi was still hanging around the loft. If he has such a talent for making smoothies, perhaps he should get a job. I loved Castle's disgust with his house guest, as he lamented to Martha in this Castle quote…

Alexis does appear to be losing Iq points the longer Pi sticks around.

"Castle" Season 6 continues to bring in the guest stars -- Billy Miller and Alicia Lagano have been cast in episode 4, a story focusing on a hostage crisis. "Number One Fan" is expected to air Oct. 14 on ABC.
Lagano ("The Client List") will play a character named Emma Briggs (as reported by TVLine). She is described as a fugitive from the law, even before she takes a group of people hostage. Strangely, Emma will not talk to the police: She only wants to speak to Richard Castle (Nathan Fillion).
Why is that? GiveMeMyRemote quotes "Castle" executive producer Andrew Marlowe for the answer: "Castle is enlisted in a hostage crisis as a negotiator because the woman doesn't trust police, and she's kind of his number one fan," he explained.

Although more recently it’s been turned into a sort of supernatural chastity belt protecting teenage girls from the hunky guys they love, vampirism always served as a deeply erotic foundation for horror stories. Movies capitalizing on this are too numerous to count, but from Jess Franco’s Vampyros Lesbos to Francis Ford Coppola’s Dracula adaptation to, Xan Cassavetes’ Kiss of the Damned, the standouts among them have always infused the curse of becoming an immortal bloodsucker with a humanity and a romanticism that makes it resonate, even if it’s ultimately only in audiences’ loins.
Although it’s destined to draw comparisons to Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight saga, Cassavetes’ film is a significantly more mature – and sexy – take on vampire romance, approaching its subject with sophistication and sensuality even as it indulges in gore and terror that’s as metaphorical as it is visceral.

The two most important things that can happen to you in a mainstream movie are being killed and having an orgasm. Sometimes in facial close-ups it's hard to tell one from the other. When Pauline Kael saw that wall poster in Italy saying "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang," she sensed she was onto something.
I've recently seen two movies centering on orgasms. The most intense is Steve McQueen's "Shame," starring Michael Fassbender as a sex addict. I think I'll save my observations about that one for my review. Hardly less intense was Louis Malle's "Damage" (1992), about an affair between a man and his son's bride-to-be. It made an impression on me at the time, and I was scouting it for a possible Great Movie review. It reminded me how important orgasms can be in the cinema.

Jamilti & Other Stories
By Rutu Modan
Drawn & Quarterly, August 2008, $19.95
Rutu Modan came to the attention of most American comics readers last year, when her graphic novel Exit Wounds was published to great acclaim. Exit Wounds went on to hit a number of top ten lists, and won the Eisner for Best New Graphic Novel. But no cartoonist comes out of nowhere – Modan had been writing and drawing shorter comics stories for a decade. Those would be these stories, which have now been corralled between two covers.
Jamilti collects seven stories, all of them but the title piece originally published in anthologies from the comics collective Actus (of which Modan was one of the two founders). (“Jamilti” itself was originally published in Drawn & Quarterly, Vol. 5, for those seeking closure.) Modan’s style has changed slightly over the years, but her artistic progression isn’t obvious. Her most recent work – Exit Wounds,...
