Pink and Yellow Elephants on Parade
boblipton10 December 2010
The first half of this Columbia 'Color Rhapsody' cartoon is very good. The title character has his truck in the circus caravan disintegrate and he wanders into an abandoned house, where he winds up drinking some medicine that is highly alcoholic. Director Art Davis works in some nice sight gags with a wandering moon, a couple of interesting point of view shots and some interesting playing with color as Mr. Elephant stumbles into a bucket of yellow paint.

The problem is that he seems to only have about four minutes of material to work with and he and his crew can't figure out any way to fill it in, so matters slow down. There is also substantial variation in the abilities of the animators, of whom only Sid Marcus is credited -- despite his species, Mr. Elephant seems to lack weight.

Still, in a year in which Columbia's cartoon department was floundering, this is a pretty good effort.

Nice looking cartoon which starts well and then trails off

Warning: Spoilers
This is a one shot cartoon produced by Charles Mintz for Columbia studio. There will be spoilers ahead:

There's a nice use of color here and it's an interesting premise-an elephant with a circus falls off of his wagon at night. There are a couple of nice gags early, one with the moon keeping pace with the wagon train and the other with an owl doing a riff on Lou Costello.

The title should be "Mr. Elephant Falls Into a Cellar", because that's what happens. He then drinks some "cold medicine" that gets him quite seriously drunk. He sees a pink elephant with wings who's channeling Edward G. Robinson. The elephant himself has a voice which sounds familiar, but I can't quite place it. There are some repetitious gags built around the elephant sneezing which are reasonably good, but after that, the cartoon seems to kind of go off the rails.

The last two or three minutes feels like the animators realized they ran out of the original ideas five minutes into a seven minute short and they're trying to stretch the last two minutes or so. It doesn't really work all that well. The ending, though cute, feels forced and tacked on.

Worth watching once.

OK Most of the Way

When a cute elephant fall out of a wagon, he finds himself in the cellar of a farmhouse with all kinds of chemicals and much alcohol. Of course, he gets drunk and starts to act really goofy. I agree with others that it fizzles half way through, but it has its moments.
