Zayn’s starting point for his fourth studio album Room Under the Stairs was an emotional low point. “Alienated” began in his home studio in rural Pennsylvania, where he wrote the majority of the record on his own in a state of both creative and physical isolation. The percussive track simmers in solitary sorrow as the musician dives simultaneously into the darkest depths of his mind and the bottom of a bottle. “Know my reasons for the pain, but if you brought it in front of me I know I’d do it all again,...

We mustn’t dwell… no, not today, not on Rex Manning Day. Today marks the 30th anniversary of Rex Manning Day, the fictional day celebrated in the Allan Moyle disaffected teen comedy Empire Records. Rex Manning Day is celebrated to honor the memory and legacy of Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain, who on April 8th was found dead in his Seattle mansion on Lake Washington Boulevard from a self-inflicted gunshot wound after dying on April 5, 1994.
Directed by Allan Moyle, Empire Records takes place over twenty-four hours in the lives of the young employees at Empire Records when they all grow up and become young adults, thanks to each other and the manager. Dripping with attitude, pining, and real-life drama, Empire Records taps into the struggles of a generation by exploring social pressure, the importance of found family, and the power of music as a healing tool. Is the NFL the only thing holding linear television together? It sure seems like it. According to Sports Business Journal, pro football accounted for 93 of the most-watched TV shows in 2023. College football took three more slots. That leaves just four non-football programs in the Top 100.
The most-watched event, as you might imagine, was the Eagles-Chiefs Super Bowl in February. The NFL playoffs also filled up the top slots. But even regular season football games appear in the 30-million-viewer ballpark.
The only non-football programs to appear on the list are the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade (#23 at 27.35M), President Biden’s State of the Union (#37 at 25.39M), the Academy Awards (#63 at 18.76M), and the post-Super Bowl debut of “Next Level Chef” (#93 At 15.66M).
Notably, two streaming-exclusive games cracked the Top 100: Prime Video’s Black Friday Seahawks-Cowboys game and the Sept. 14 Vikings-Eagles game.

Tony Bennett accepted the boundaries of his universe.
In the last few decades of his life, the period of his greatest success, he never tried to do a Rick Rubin/Johnny Cash-style album of recent pop and rock hits tweaked to suit his voice. Instead, he transported the contemporary artists he worked with — Lady Gaga especially — to his preferred musical arena: the Great American Songbook classics of Johnny Mercer, Irving Berlin, Rodgers and Hart, the Gershwins, Harold Arlen, and so many more. Without seeing the cover, you’d never even know his “MTV Unplugged” album was an “MTV Unplugged” album just by listening to it. His last studio album, “The Silver Lining: The Songs of Jerome Kern,” speaks to his appreciation of the craft of songwriting embodied by the entire Great American Songbook era, and how a singer can work in dialogue with that songwriter even decades after their death to create meaning.

Although most fans assume celebrities have easy lives, Alicia Keys has had her share of challenges. Keys, who began writing music at age 12, was raised by a single parent in a rough, crime-riddled New York neighborhood. When she had her first breakdown as an adult, the singer “ran away” to a surprising country.

American Idol’s top-three contestants — Tennessee’s HunterGirl (Hunter Wolkonowski), Kentucky’s Noah Thompson and Leah Marlene of Illinois — will journey to “Idol” glory including a rest stop on the New Jersey turnpike. The top three will take on the music of Bruce Springsteen for the three-hour finale on Sunday at 8 p.m. Et/5 p.m. Pt on ABC.
For the finale, the top three will also join judges Luke Bryan, Katy Perry and Lionel Richie for duets following the ceremonial airing of the “Hometown” episode.
In a video released Thursday, Perry surprised Marlene by revealing she and Marlene will join together for a song she only reserves for “inaugural occasions”: “Firework.” Kerry was touched by an old video of the then-9-year old “Idol” contestant performing the song and will be joining her for the special finale duet.

Olivia Rodrigo would appear to be close to a shoo-in for several Grammys, but when it comes to what’s generally considered the most prestigious prize, album of the year, there’s a serious competitor packing heat, and he’s old enough to be her grandfather’s grandfather.
Rodrigo has a decent shot at winning the Grammys’ quadruple crown, for album, record, song and new artist of the year, just as another teen, Billie Eilish, did two years ago. Tony Bennett is the likeliest spoiler, however, of the 19-year-old’s shot at grabbing all the Grammy glory her first time out of the gate. It’s the 95-year-old legend’s last time in contention. His last recorded hurrah, a collaboration with Lady Gaga, wouldn’t exactly go down as the most au courant album winner ever, but it would prompt a lot of “awwwws” if it gives him one last...

The 1995 Grammys ceremony was one of the most interesting the award show has ever had. Most relevant to this year, it was the last year without nomination review committees. And not coincidentally, it was the year Tony Bennett won Album of the Year for his “MTV Unplugged.” Bennett’s win is an interesting one to ponder, especially as he is now nominated for Album of the Year again for “Love for Sale” with Lady Gaga.
Bennett has always been on the Grammys’ radar. His first wins were at the 5th Grammy Awards, where he took home Record of the Year and Best Male Solo Vocal Performance for “I Left My Heart in San Francisco.” Bennett was a consistent nominee for a couple years after that, but dropped off the awards’ radar for 25 years until in 1991 his album “Astoria: Portrait Of The Artist” became his first nomination since 1966.

With a new Grammy ceremony coming on January 31, a few records are poised to be broken. Here are four artists looking to make a splash and cement themselves even more in Grammy history than they already are.
SEE2022 Grammy predictions: R&b album races include tough match-up between H.E.R., Jon Batiste, and Jazmine Sullivan Tony Bennett
This pop standards legend has a couple of records he could break due to his multiple nominations for his Lady Gaga collaboration album, “Love For Sale.” If Bennett wins any category come January, he will become the second oldest person to ever win a Grammy, at 95 years and 181 days. The current record is held by Pinetop Perkins, who won nearing 98-years-old. Furthermore, if Bennett wins one (or both) of his general field nominations, he will be the oldest person ever to win a general field award. He’s already the oldest person ever to be nominated in those categories.

The long concert career of singer Tony Bennett is finally finished after 70 years.
Bennett’s son, Danny Bennett, his manager for more than 40 years, canceled his remaining tour dates on Thursday. He said on Friday that Bennett’s two recent dates with Lady Gaga at New York’s Radio City Music Hall would be his last.
Earlier this year, Bennett’s family revealed that the 19-time Grammy-winner was diagnosed with dementia in 2016.
The younger Bennett cited doctor’s orders as the reason, although acknowledging his father was still capable of performing at age 95. The move has been made to avoid any falls or other onstage mishaps, he said. According to AARP The Magazine, the singer rarely speaks, and “when he does, his words are halting; at times, he seems lost and bewildered.”

MTV turns 40 on Sunday, and it hardly looks its age. Well, that’s because it hardly looks like, well, anything anymore. At least that’s the depressing state of the linear MTV channel, which in recent years has become 95% reruns of “Ridiculousness,” along with a handful of runs of 20-year-old movies (“Joe Dirt”) and limited first-run airings of legacy shows like “Teen Mom” and “Catfish: The TV Series.”
It’s been a cliché for years to complain about what happened to the music on MTV. But the music question has been moot since the mid-2000s, when videos moved to YouTube and Vevo. The larger issue is, what happened to the programming, period, on MTV? It’s become a zombie channel, and for those of us still rooting for the brand, it’s a sad sight to see.

The 37th Grammy Awards, held in March 1995, were an especially influential ceremony thanks to Tony Bennett’s controversial Album of the Year win for “MTV Unplugged,” which led the academy to introduce their now-infamous and now-deceased nomination review committees to decide the ultimate contenders. But there was a more overlooked result that took place on the same night, and it was actually pretty rare: Sheryl Crow (“All I Wanna Do”) and Bruce Springsteen (“Streets of Philadelphia”) split the awards for Record of the Year and Song of the Year, respectively. That was actually the last time that two songs split those awards when both songs were nominated in both categories.
Prior to Crow/Springsteen, Record and Song of the Year had split like that only seven times:
1963: “I Left My Heart In San Francisco” by Tony Bennett (Record) and “What Kind of Fool Am I?” by Sammy Davis Jr....

For those feeling wolverine levels of hunger for further Duran Duran backstory, Paramount Plus’ revival of the “Behind the Music” franchise plans to meet that need with an episode’s worth of memories — careless, careful or otherwise — devoted to the band. The platform is announcing today the addition of Duran Duran, New Kids on the Block and Bret Michaels episodes, along with a trailer that reveals glimpses of the first eight, dates for which have now been set.
The revived series kicks off July 29 with a double-dose of episodes featuring Ricky Martin and LL Cool J. From there, “Behind the Music” will debut a new episode every Thursday through Sept. 9, in what it’s calling the first half of the season. This initial late summer rollout will also include the previously announced Huey Lewis, Busta Rhymes and Fat Joe.

Earlier this week, Bob Dylan announced his first live performance since 2019, but it’s not a continuation of the Never Ending Tour like everyone expected. He’s instead doing a livestream concert on July 18th via the website Veeps, which was founded by Benji and Joel Madden of Good Charlotte. They’re calling the event Shadow Kingdom.
“Shadow Kingdom will showcase Bob Dylan in an intimate setting as he performs songs from his extensive body of work,” reads a press release, “created especially for this event.”

The Dave Grohl-directed series about musicians and their mothers has been given a start date, with a May 16 premiere for a Paramount Plus show that will feature artists from Geddy Lee to Miranda Lambert interacting with their moms.
Grohl himself will be one of the musicians showing off his mother, as Virginia Hanlon Grohl will appear on “From Cradle to Stage,” a series that takes its title from her book, “From Cradle to Stage: Stories from the Mothers Who Rocked and Raised Rock Stars.”
Others taking part in the six-part series alongside their mothers are Brandi Carlile, Pharrell Williams, Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine and Dan Reynolds of Imagine Dragons.
The mother-and-son Grohl team are executive producers on the show, and will appear alongside the guest family members on each episode of the show, which is being produced in partnership with Live Nation Productions, SIlva Artist Management and Endeavor Content.

The press conference had barely begun when Gene Simmons weighed in with typical bluntness. “This tour and the whole event,” he said, leaning into a microphone, “it is a culmination of more than a decade of our fans being on top of our asses saying we have to do it.”
The “it” was the fantasy of Kiss fans across the globe: a reunion of the original quartet, in full makeup, reviving the songs and stage costumes that had made Kiss one of the all-conquering bands of the Seventies. And on April 16th,...

After months of buildup, ViacomCBS next week is set to flip the switch for Paramount Plus — its bulked-up streaming platform engineered to throw bigger elbows in an increasingly crowded market.
For now, the pricing won’t change. But this summer, the media conglomerate will lower the entry-level price for Paramount Plus, the new name of the rebranded CBS All Access.
The base, ad-supported tier of Paramount Plus, launching in June, will cost $4.99 per month — a dollar less than the current entry-level CBS All Access package with commercials. The full Paramount Plus premium tier with no ads (except in live programming) will be the same, at $9.99 per month.
There’s an important caveat, though: The $5 monthly plan for Paramount Plus, while it will include live sports including NFL games, will exclude local CBS stations. In June, the previous $5.99/month plan will be discontinued, but ViacomCBS said existing subscribers will not be...

Coldplay’s “Fix You” was always something of a hymn, and last night, the song finally got the choir it needed. On their MTV Unplugged performance, the seven members of South Korean pop powerhouse BTS delivered an angelic, meticulously arranged, goose-bump-inducing cover of the song. It was a ridiculously perfect performance that should convert any remaining skeptics of BTS, Coldplay, soaring balladry, and/or the power of the human spirit.
“This song gave us comfort,” BTS’ Jimin said, “so we wanted to prepare this cover to comfort you as well.

Miley Cyrus is set to headline a new installment of “MTV Unplugged” from her Los Angeles home, the network announced Monday.
The pop star will perform an original cover of “Gimme More” by Britney spears, as well as covers of songs by Pearl Jam, The Cardigans and more. In the tradition of “Unplugged,” Cyrus will also perform stripped-down versions of her own hits.
The episode, titled “Miley Cyrus Backyard Sessions,” will air Friday, Oct. 16.
“Backyard Sessions” will be Cyrus’ second “Unplugged” after previously doing the show in 2014 to promote her album “Bangerz.” Cyrus also recently did a virtual performance of her recent single “Midnight Sky” at the 2020 MTV Video Music Awards.
MTV revived the “Unplugged” series earlier this year as an at-home performance series for the network’s social channels. JoJo, Alessia Cara, Jewel and the K-pop boy band Monsta X are among the acts who have recently performed on the show.

In this century, Bruce Springsteen’s influence has been wide-ranging and easy to find, with artists from the Killers to Lana Del Rey proudly name-checking him. In the post-Born in the U.S.A. Nineties, it was somewhat rarer to hear musicians cite him, but there was one major exception: Melissa Etheridge, who always declared herself a super-fan, and ended up dueting with Springsteen on “Thunder Road” during her 1995 episode of MTV Unplugged. Come as you are — leave with a multimillion-dollar ax. A guitar that Kurt Cobain played during Nirvana’s 1993 MTV Unplugged concert sold for a cool $6.01 million at auction Saturday. The price was more than 50% higher than any other guitar ever sold at an auction.
The late singer-songwriter’s 1959 Martin D-18E, along with its case and some personal items inside, had been expected to fetch $1 million-$2 million. Instead, it dwarfed the previous record high for a guitar — the $3.95 million paid for a Stratocaster owned by David Gilmour of Pink Floyd, Julien’s Auctions said.
Nirvana was at the top of its game when MTV recorded the Seattle band’s acoustic concert in November 1993. The aired a month later and was released as MTV Unplugged in New York nearly a year later. That album was certified eight times platinum a few months ago, and the longform video has sold more than 700,000 units.

The guitar Kurt Cobain played during Nirvana’s legendary 1993 “MTV Unplugged” session sold for a pretty penny on Saturday at an auction in Los Angeles.
Cobain’s 1959 Martin D-18E, which was originally purchased by the Nirvana singer at L.A.’s Voltage Guitars, went for a total of $6.01 million, breaking the record for the most expensive guitar ever sold. The record was previously held by a black Stratocaster belonging to Pink Floyd’s David Gilmour, which sold for $3.95 million last year.
Cobain used the guitar in Nirvana’s famous “MTV Unplugged” set, which featured stripped-down renditions of classics including “Come As You Are,” “About A Girl” and “Dumb,” in addition to several covers of songs by David Bowie, Leadbelly and Meat Puppets. The performance was released after Cobain’s death as a live album, ultimately earning the band a Grammy in 1996 for best alternative music performance.
