Baby Kittens was a Walter Lantz "Cartune" that had one funny gag and a good score from Scott Bradley
Just watched this Walter Lantz "Cartune" from Universal on YouTube as linked from Cartoon Brew. It concerns these kittens who befriend a dog who initially tries to scare them. The mother of these kittens isn't thrilled about the dog "taking" her children and decides to do something about it...Jerry Beck from Cartoon Brew decided to post this because it's one of the few from Universal scored by Scott Bradley before working full-time for M-G-M. Bradley's score-like his legendary ones on the Tom and Jerry and Tex Avery cartoons for Leo the Lion-is quite compelling here but seems wasted on such a mediocre animated short from the later producer of Woody Woodpecker and Andy Panda "cartunes". In fact, the only funny gag to me was when a baby in a carriage hit his bottle at the dog who was trying to get some milk for the kittens. And what's with the voice-over for the dog when he's not moving his lips? Was that a post-dub decision? Anyway, on that note, I'd only recommend Baby Kittens for either Walter Lantz completists or those who want to hear a Scott Bradley score on something other than an M-G-M cartoon.
