Tom and Jerry as plumbers
The Van Beuren Tom and Jerry (as said already not the famous cat and mouse, this is a human duo that lasted for just under 30 cartoons, 29 if memory serves correct, between 1931 and 1933) series was interesting but uneven and not easy to rate as an overall whole. At the series' best, the cartoons were good, very good in a few cases. At its worst, they were really bad.
'Joint Wipers' is not one of the really bad Tom and Jerry cartoons. At the same time it's not one of the good ones either. It may be unappealing visually, not very funny, not bizarre enough and somewhat dull, but there's nothing in the characters design or behaviour and the gags that will offend and it has its moments. There are good things, the best thing about it is the music score which is the high point of even the worst cartoons and is so beautifully and cleverly orchestrated and full of energy, doing so well with enhancing the action. Tom and Jerry's profession song is very catchy, though it does take up a little too much time.
There is some decent synchronised movement with the music and a couple of good gags, the highlights being the water drops playing the piano and the sardines jumping out of their can.
Conversely, once again, most of the animation didn't do it for me. There are worse-looking cartoons in the series, at least the backgrounds and some of the synchronisation was decent, but it is not one of the most visually interesting ones like 'Wot a Night'. Too much of it is crude and simplistic with a fair share of static moments. Tom and Jerry look primitive, and none of the supporting characters are well drawn and all are also uninteresting in personality.
While the Tom and Jerry cartoons are absurdist and weird in their style of humour, this didn't come through enough in too many of the gags, in a cartoon where the number of gags also aren't quite enough. Especially when 'Joint Wipers' loses even more energy than the little it already has in the second half. This situation by Tom and Jerry standards should have become increasingly bizarre, but for my money it doesn't because the timing is pretty limp in particularly the later stages and it's just too predictable with an ending that can be smelt way off.
It's a paper thin cartoon in story once again, true of most cartoons in the series, with everything feeling like filler. Atmosphere-wise, it is as bland as the lead characters.
All in all, an okay cartoon but lacks lustre with too few gags that apart from a few moments aren't strangely absurdist enough. 4/10 Bethany Cox
