... and directed by french pioneer Henri Diamant-Berger. I don't remember any good movie by that director but this "Paris La Nuit" (Paris by night) isn't very exciting, it is the same kind of story than "Chignon d'or" with Mistinguett (rich visit parisian apaches), and I really advise this one, far more punchy. "Paris la nuit" is quite slow, the cinematography is poor, and the casting is far less exciting than in "Chignon d'or" : you'd rather jump on this one. The only interest might be a few songs.

French producer Henri Diamant-Berger made a lot of movies , both in the silent age and in the talkies era,;most of them ,not to say all of them, are , to put it mildly , mediocre .

In the short space of three years (1929-1931), he managed to put out 12 movies !"clair de lune" (1932) had an unexpected ending ,which was rare at the time ; most of them ("l'enfant du miracle" ,"sola") are routine melodramas.

"Paris la nuit" is based on a screenplay written in a slapdash manner. An esthetician urges a countess to mix with the riffraff ,in spite of her attentive escort's warnings ; she should relinquish the chic luxury nightclubs for the bal musette (popular dance to the accordion ).in fact, she covets the noble lady's jewels ,and in this seedy place, there's much help from her mates (and even contenders).

The absolutely dumb screenplay is a pretext to hear songs ("passons la monnaie" =let's have the money" )is suitable in this context and to enter the apaches' (= ruffians) world ,the Parisian underworld. The excellent Marguerite Moreno is the only asset of this forgettable dud.
