Shonen Jump will quickly cancel a series that doesn't appeal to its readers, so writers need to employ certain strategies to keep their manga from being axed. Shonen Jump's core demographic is easily won over by fast-paced storytelling, action, and comedy. Given the frequency of cancelation, classic manga like Dragon Ball and the Big Three might've struggled to avoid an early cancelation today.
When Kagurabachi debuted in Shonen Jump, it received an absurd amount of attention. People hyped it up as the next manga classic; it would earn "Kagurabachillion" dollars and become a hit anime. Surprisingly, the manga is living up to the hype (to a reasonable degree) and doing well in Shonen Jump. However, the joke was about more than how good this series would be. It was about how often Shonen Jump likes to cancel new manga early in their run (less than 30 chapters). Despite this tendency, readers...

The success of Knights of the Zodiac on Netflix indicates that Hollywood is capable of properly adapting manga/anime, after years of disappointing live-action adaptations. Mackenyu's performances in both One Piece and Knights of the Zodiac have contributed greatly to their success, making him a breakout star in the world of live-action anime. The success of Knight of the Zodiac and other anime adaptations on Netflix opens up the possibility for expanding the One Piece universe and potentially giving Mackenyu's character a spinoff.
The timing of Knights of the Zodiac's releasing on Netflix is perfect, as the streaming service builds on its recent success with manga/anime. For years, audiences have suffered through some of the worst live-action adaptations of anime, and it has contributed to the belief that Hollywood simply isn't capable of properly adapting the unique and well-respected medium. Movie adaptations of well-loved properties often flop, like Dragonball Evolution and Netflix's Knights of the Zodiac, due to poor scriptwriting and lack of faith in the source material. Dragonball Evolution failed not only because it strayed from the source material, but also because of bad visual effects, messy storylines, and controversial casting choices. Knights of the Zodiac repeats many of Dragonball Evolution's mistakes, receiving negative reviews for its use of CGI and hard-to-follow plot, but is praised for its portrayal of the anime's melodramatic atmosphere and representation of an Asian lead character.
A movie adaptation is always a risk, especially when it is tackling a well-loved property or developing an animated piece into the live-action realm, and unfortunately more often than not, these adaptations are flops, just like Dragonball Evolution and Netflix's most recent anime adaptation, Knights of the Zodiac. In 2009, Dragonball Evolution became one of the worst anime movie adaptations ever.

The live-action Saint Seiya movie, Knights of the Zodiac, deviates from the original manga significantly. Seiya's backstory in the movie differs from the manga, as he is already an adult when he begins his training to become a Pegasus Knight. The absence of the Galaxian Wars in the movie explains why the classic Bronze Saints are not included, and the movie instead focuses on Seiya's mission to protect Sienna from Vander Guraad.
Knights of the Zodiac (2023) brought Seiya to the big screen, but the live-action Saint Seiya movie makes several changes to the original manga and anime. Saint Seiya's iconic armor represents more than just a symbol — it embodies heroism, sacrifice, and battles against powerful foes and Gods. The strength of the Saints lies not only in their armor, but in their mastery of Cosmo, a mystical energy that dictates their ranks and represents their growth and challenges. While the Gold Saints are the most powerful, the Silver and Bronze Saints play crucial roles in the world of Saint Seiya, with their own unique abilities, complexities, and contributions.

Saint Seiya: Omega introduced a fundamental shift in the understanding and use of the Cosmo, intertwining it with elemental forces. The infusion of the seven elements into the Cosmo added a strategic depth to combat, where affinity to a particular element could determine victory. Mastery over one's element became crucial in the new paradigm, with training at Palestra focusing on elemental strategies and synchronization with nature's forces.

There are a lot of anime spin-offs, yet few are as superior while unjustly overlooked as Saint Seiya: The Lost Canvas. It does not overshadow the original series but rather plays the role of somewhat of a prequel, rich with its own mythological splendor. Saint Seiya: The Lost Canvas tells a tale that is steeped in mature themes and philosophy without being pretentious. While the original Saint Seiya anime was set during modern times, Saint Seiya: The Lost Canvas is set in a time more similar to the Middle Ages and in a nutshell tells the story of Pegasus and Hades' first incarnations.
The animation takes a painterly leap forward, creating a visual landscape that is quite mesmerizing. Where the original animation feels limited by the technology of the time it was produced, Saint Seiya: The Lost Canvas elevates its production value and grants the Saint Seiya franchise an entry that simply shines.

Sports anime and manga occupy an incredibly interesting space in the genre. Often it comes to the table with all the intensity and over-the-top emotion of battle manga while doing something that is, in the grand scheme of things, relatively mundane. High school sports, while all-consuming in the moment, are very rarely portrayed in Western media as being the "be all end all" that they are in manga. Events that are nowhere near life or death are treated as if they are, and it manages to work. Many lovers of the genre know that a good sports anime will take them on a wild journey from start to finish.
Slam Dunk is one such franchise. Hitting the pages of Shonen Jump all the way back in 1990, the story captured the all-encompassing obsession with victory and defeat that the genre is famous for. It was also so much more than that.

\There is a risk in taking a much-beloved IP and rebooting it, especially these days when fans have become way more vocal than ever before. Though not all of these criticisms are justified, some are very much in their place. One example relates to Netflix's CGI reimagining of Saint Seiya, a reboot that could be described as a collage of missed opportunities and a poorly executed homage. When the original Saint Seiya premiered in 1986, it didn't just deliver episodes, it built a narrative legacy with themes of friendship, loyalty, and honor. Anime is well-known for powering up characters with transformations. Plenty of those transformations have become iconic in their own right: Bleach's Bankai, Naruto's Sharingan, Saint Seiya's God Cloth, Attack on Titan's Titan shifting, Sailor Moon's Moon Prism Power, etc. Among these transformations, Dragon Ball Z's Super Saiyan has to be one of if not the most iconic. Every anime fan and even mainstream audiences know the form, it inspired many power-ups that followed, and it's just an epic transformation in general. It's an icon of anime and pop culture the world over. It would be difficult for anyone to conceive a form change as unique and impactful as Super Saiyan.
As challenging as creating an iconic transformation can be, One Piece is ambitious enough to throw its proverbial straw hat in the ring. The series initially tried to compete using Monkey D Luffy's Gear Four transformation,...

Mackenyu Arata has had plenty of experience playing anime characters in live-action series. He's best known for Chihayafuru but has prominent roles in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, Tokyo Ghoul, Fullmetal Alchemist, and Rurouni Kenshin. 2023, in particular, presented this actor with a couple of chances to make it big in the U.S. market.
Mackenyu played two iconic Shonen Jump figures in anime adaptations this year. The first was Pegasus Seiya in Knights of the Zodiac, an American-Japanese version of Saint Seiya. The second is Roronoa Zoro in the One Piece Netflix series coming this August. KoTZ didn't pan out for Mackenyu, but One Piece could be a different story.

When people think of anime's beginnings in America, they mostly think of the 2000s. It's a fair assumption, as Toonami really didn't get going until the 2000s, and some of the most popular series in America didn't come Stateside until the mid to late 2000s. However, anime in the '90s still played an important part in the growth of the medium.

The new Saint Seiya movie, Knights of the Zodiac, has been compared to Dragon Ball Evolution for several reasons. They're both not-so-great live-action adaptations of beloved anime franchises. Incidentally, Saint Seiya and Dragon Ball were both series whose anime were done by Toei Animation and whose manga were published in Weekly Shonen Jump. Putting these series into a format more appropriate for mainstream audiences should have been a no-brainer, but the result was two movies that scored pretty low on Rotten Tomatoes.
However, there is a slight discrepancy in this comparison. At the time of writing, KotZ and Dbe received 26% and 15%, respectively, from critics, the former has an audience score in the 60s to the latter's 20%. In these regards, KotZ did much better than Dbe as a movie. That, or the lack of familiarity with Saint Seiya in America caused critics who remember Dragon Ball fondly to go easier on the former's adaptation.

The anime community is always welcoming new fans from around the world, but many non-fans aren't sure where to start or why they even should. They need a gateway series to launch their interest in anime, and while some shows are perfect, others cater to enfranchised anime fans.
Several factors go into making a great gateway anime, such as high production values to make a good impression of the industry or being easy and convenient to find on DVD or online streaming platforms like Crunchyroll. Another, often overlooked factor is that a good introductory anime needs a linear, engaging plot to hook new viewers and give them a story worth remembering.

In both Japan and other regions such as Latin America, Saint Seiya is one of the most popular shonen anime and manga franchises. That's not the case in the West, with various attempts to bring the franchise to American audiences failing miserably. While one incarnation titled Knights of the Zodiac is well-known, two other versions never even made it to the silver screen.
There were two different attempts to adapt Saint Seiya for American audiences that never even saw the light of day. One of these was live-action and made in the vein of a similar success story, while another was animated like the Japanese source material. Both failed to ever materialize, though it's questionable just how successful they would have been in getting the property over for potential Western fans.

Some shonen fans feel there's a distinct lack of faithful on-screen adaptations of their favorite manga titles. However, there are perfectly well-written shonen series that have received nearly flawless anime adaptations over the years. Mob Psycho 100 is among the latter, though there are some fascinating differences and similarities between the hit anime and its source material.
Mob Psycho 100 recently concluded its third and final season, finally catching anime-only viewers up with the end of the story. Although the anime may match the manga almost to a T, there are some different concepts between the two versions; the on-screen adaptation expanded on certain scenes and brought some entirely original material.

Saint Seiya was one of the biggest manga to ever come out of Shonen Jump's golden age. It ran from 1986 to 1990 as a contemporary to other hit series like Fist of the North Star and Dragon Ball. Just like these series, it helped define the genre of shonen battle manga and continues to be a beloved franchise to this day, at least in international markets. It had intense drama, brilliantly extravagant outfit designs, and some of the most powerful protagonists in all of fiction. This is all despite the series technically being incomplete.
As good as Saint Seiya is, the original run of the manga didn't end the way it was supposed to. It was canceled before it could enter what would have been its last and most epic saga. Some optimistic fans are hoping that Masami Kurumada will someday write the conclusion to his magnum opus, but there's just...

Known as Knights of the Zodiac in the West, the Saint Seiya franchise is one of the most popular classic shonen properties around the world. Debuting in the 1980s, it's gone on to be a major hit even outside Japan, with Latin America and other regions loving the series. Unfortunately, that's not the case with the recent live-action movie, which unfortunately has the same issues as most anime adaptations of this variety.
Saint Seiya: The Beginning (simply Knights of the Zodiac in the West) is now premiering in North America, having already been released in other regions. In said other countries, it's been a massive flop, even with how iconic the original series may be. It's now set up to fail exponentially in America, which has historically rejected it anyway. From acting issues to bad pacing and worse adaptation choices, it's no wonder why many are comparing the new Saint Seiya...

Mortal Kombat meets Power Rangers in the undercooked and over-the-top Knights of the Zodiac, a live-action adaptation of the Japanese anime series, Knights of the Zodiac: Saint Seiya, and the manga Saint Seiya by Masami Kurumada. Kurumada has always wanted to adapt his manga while he worked on it, and you can see why in the opening narration. But like many manga and anime with great stories of epic battles, intricate mythologies, and colorful characters, their potential only sometimes translates to live-action. More often than not, Hollywood cannot faithfully adapt anime stories without sacrificing some crucial elements, and the same goes for Knights of the Zodiac.
Directed by Tomasz Bagiński, Knights of the Zodiac tells the story of Seiya (Mackenyu), a teen boy who lives on the streets and survives by fighting in underground martial art rings. One night, his fight gets out of hand and power within manifests. He...

It takes a lot of fierce determination to give birth to a new franchise, but Sony Pictures seems up for the behemoth task with Knights of the Zodiac. The bold live-action adaptation of the Saint Seiya manga, plucked from the popular television anime series and comics, comes from Polish director/producer Tomasz Baginski (The Witcher: Blood Origin) and stars Mackenyu (Pacific Rim: Uprising) as Seiya, a street orphan who realizes he must protect Sienna (Madison Iseman of TV’s I Know What You Did Last Summer), a girl suddenly inhabited by Athena, the goddess of war. Saving the world is definitely on the agenda — big time — but Seiya must face his own past and become a Knight of the Zodiac.
The compelling cast also includes Sean Bean, Famke Janssen, Nick Stahl (Fear the Walking Dead), Diego Tinoco (On My Block), and Mark Dacascos (John Wick: Parabellum).

Review: Live-action adaptations of anime films and series have succeeded in Japan, but few have overcome the transition to Hollywood. Though some fans may not realize it, Saint Seiya is one of the most popular and successful anime/manga franchises of all time. Selling millions of copies since it debuted in the 1980s, it has continued to make a mark not only in Japan but in several other regions around the world, including Latin America. Unfortunately, it would seem that the West is the one market where the series' colorful knights aren't quite as respected.
When it came to North America, Saint Seiya's adaptation was quickly overshadowed by other anime. This was due to a combination of factors, but especially the fact that the show was by this point so sold. The result is that while the world at large can't get enough of it, America failed to ever get into it in the first place.

Hollywood has been trying to craft films based on popular Japanese anime for quite some time now with mixed results. Astroboy was a passable effort, mainly because it was an animated 3D film. Alita: Battle Angel was good because Robert Rodriguez is a massive fan of the original story. The Guyver trilogy made in the 90s were basic action films with some elements similar to the original manga.
Legacy IPs such as Death Note, Ghost in the Shell, Dragon Ball, and even Cowboy Bebop were subjected to heavy Westernization with live-action adaptations, making them utterly unrecognizable from their original concept. Knights of the Zodiac (or Saint Seiya as it's known in the rest of the world) had the potential to be different, but the people at Stage 6 Films have made some unfortunate choices which rethread the same mistakes from past franchises.
