Why bother?
Skippy-1923 January 1999
The only reason I rented this is because I vowed to see every horror movie in the town. My comments are not going to be nice ones.

The premise is not bad. A demon rider living on through the ages. The problems are the writing, directing, acting, dubbing editing, cinematography...I'll bet even the gaffer had something to do with the poor quality.

This isn't even a good time-filler. Even as something just to have background noise while doing something in the kitchen, it don't work.

As a final complaint: isn't a devil incarnate supposed to dress in black?

Dull

Warning: Spoilers
Is it O.K. that cast members and family write reviews here? I mean, even though they state that they are such, is that really ethical? that's one reason I gave only 1 star, I really find that unethical. As for the movie itself; sure, I think it was made with good intentions for the budget available; but it really isn't very good. There are quite a few continuity problems; I suppose that's from no apparent editting. And although we're told that "the only way to kill him is cut off his head with his own sabre", at the end his (I suppose demonic) horse brings back his still living (though removed) head, presumably to slowly kill the next group of unwary city folks.

Smells a trifle gamey
BloodTheTelepathicDog13 July 2023
Warning: Spoilers
The devil, perhaps, terrorizes some country acreage, killing anyone traipsing upon "his" land. The law catches him and hangs him, but that didn't kill our titular villain, who goes into pseudo retirement for 100 years until a gaggle of real estate developers visit his tract of land. The killings pile up again.

Billed as a horror-western, this turkey is neither, for it fits well into the unintentional comedy genre. The villain isn't terribly menacing, the characters are devoid of much character and the film as a whole is listless and cliched. There really isn't anything here to be recommended.

STORY $: Atrocious! It would have been more appealing had the film stayed in the Old West, rather than transplanting it to modern times. In so doing, we have the tired Hollywood cliches of city folk belittling country folk, the old eccentric who foretells doom and standard stereotypes that the players fall in. The worst part about this film is the ghastly, juvenile dialogue. After one character gets killed, hours later, they decide to move her corpse to another room, to which the aforementioned cantankerous eccentric, Zeb (Wayne Douglass) says, " Good idea. She's smelly pretty gamey." As for the title villain, the Devil Rider (Tag Groat), he may have the Mel Blanc diabolical laugh mastered, but menacing he isn't. He seems to take a shine to Janet (Lee Knight), the floozy of the developer group, peeping at her at intervals, and when he abducts her, he massages his need for mayhem by... scratching her with a stick! I guess that's how Ol' Scratch gets his kicks.

ACTING $: I generally cut actors some slack when they're shackled to a terrible script, but nobody in this picture has much business pursuing the thespian profession. There's nobody in the cast worth singling out.

SEX/NUDITY $: The Devil Rider goes all peeping tom and watches Janet shower, then keeps spying on her as she gets intimate in a barn with some bloke who's barely been introduced.

Devil Rider (1991)

(7/10):In this obscure, shot on video horror/western a vicious cowboy killer who was hung comes back from the dead to kill anyone who sets foot on his property.

It's a simple concept and admittedly it's not great but I rather enjoyed it as this is more worth my time than the likes of Ghost Riders, which was kinda boring but this one doesn't hide a lot of its poor effects and has one thing really good going for it, the costumes are great!

The picture quality on shot on video horror flicks are usually pretty bad but this one had some decent picture quality.

I also liked the score for this movie, simple, maybe even just a stock soundtrack but for whatever reason it just worked for me.

The movie is that bad kinda good but is a cool little western slasher flick that is decent for what it is.

No Bad Considering
djbuddy975 July 2006
I finally watched this film...and frankly, enjoyed. After all, my father wrote it!!!! I happen to know a little bit about the film in that it was all shot on 200 foot reels AND everything was done in one take. NO multiple takes...which, outside of editing, would be akin to shooting a video on the fly today, and handing it to someone...

All that taken into consideration, it is actually a great horror story: The spirit of a psychotic comes back in the flesh to claim his land...bloodying up everyone on it in the process.

If it had been done with a multimillion dollar budget and b grade actors (ex: Cary Elweis, etc) it could be a lot of fun.

I say, remake it...only this time around with some big names and big budgets.

A great " B " horror film, worth the price of the DVD.

Great leading man, sure I'd say that, it was me ( Rick Groat ), I am proud to say that I co-produced and star in this good old fun, action horror movie, with my co star brother Tag Groat as the Devil Rider. I did a change of character for this one as a yuppie type dude taking some folks to a ranch to buy property, only to find out that it was being terrorized by an outlaw from H..., and things get hairy. I had a great time doing this film with some very good film makers, stunt men, and actors. Check out the e-f-x, as they are very creative, as we had a small budget, and had to be very inventive. This film is a great B horror movie, and combines the old west with the new. Check it out, it is worth the price of the DVD, I have one. Rick Groat. Come see my page here on IMDb.
