Bad, really really bad, but I did laugh a few times
changingshades16 April 2001
I won't lie to you, this movie was bad. Really bad. It was god awful. But worthy of the bottom 100, I don't know. Kevin McDonald was part of the second greatest sketch comedy show, the Kids in the Hall(second only to the state). Paul Greenberg was in the Vacant Lot, a highly underrated show that I still don't get all of. I admit that I lost a few brain cells due to this movie, but It did have its moments of good comedy. Uh, I really can't think of any, but I know I laughed a few times. Oh god, I 'm remembering the impersonations. so bad so so bad.

Honestly, Dom Deluise was better in Loose Cannons and I hated that movie. and Rodney Dangerfeild should kick it so that we can remember how good he was doing stand up and in Caddyshack.

This movie was bad even for afternoon Showtime.

Godawful misery
chas774 January 1999
With people like Rodney Dangerfield as "the Rodfather" and Dom DeLuise as "The Oddfather" I had hopes for this one...dashed immediately the actors started flapping their gums. Who wrote this script? It stinks! And the director couldn't direct traffic. Some good set-ups that fall apart, horrible gags -- it's a spoof that doesn't work at all. Why was this movie made? Compared to this, "Mafia" is actually a fine film (and I hated it when it came out!) I would suspect that the sole "positive comments" from two reviewers were probably the director's wife and his best friend as no one I've met who has seen this film enjoyed it at all.

so you want to make a movie

The only good thing about this movie is the fact that it justifies every idea you and your friends have ever had about making a comedy.

Dear lord......
thebishop216 December 2000
Why is it good character type actors who are funny in little roles always want to be the star of a movie? Why can't they just accept the fact that they're really good at the bit part that everyone remembers?

Kevin McDonald fits this to a tee, and this movie proves it. It's really bad parody of The GodFather. It has what looks like a good cast and it SOUNDS like it's gonna be funny, but all it turns out to be is a few sight gags and cameos strung together by a pitifully bad script. The 'stars' in the film include Rodney Dangerfield and Dom Deluise. But it follows Guppy, McDonalds character, throughout this godawful flick. How he's trying to take his family legit and blah,blah,blah.....

Why can't he just get the Kids in the Hall back together? It seems like he can't break out of the mold that he was on that show. He plays weird little characters. Nothing else. I still like him as a bit player, but he's proven that he definetly can't carry a film. Put a big pass on this one.

Ouch!

As a fan of really bad movies, this one was hard for even me to stomach. It made Anaconda look like a masterpiece of cinema. This movie reeks of Dom Deluise (coincidentally one of the stars). I love Kevin MacDonald from Kids in the Hall, but nothing could have made this movie worth making--for anyone involved! From horrible acting to horrible writing, this movie stinks through and through. I dare you to watch.

Not the Worst Ever, BUT...
MovieAddict201628 February 2003
Definitely one of the worst films of 1998, if not THE worst, "The Godson" lacks one fundamental element of comedy: Humor.

The cast, including Rodney Dangerfield, Dom DeLuise (who spoofs Don Corleone), and Kevin "Kids in the Hall" McDonald, would make you think this film a riot. However, it is quite the contary.

The jokes all fall flat, including the excrutiatingly unfunny "bank" skit, that just went on and on until I was squirming out of my chair - not from boredom (well, not ONLY because of boredom) - but because like many of the "jokes," it outstays its welcome to a point of discomfort.

Overall, this movie is one of those films that should be seen only if you're in the mood for it. Which SHOULD be never.

1/5 stars -

Worst movie I have ever seen
Fox-7225 July 1999
This movie was painful to watch. I usually find every movie to be fairly entertaining, but this is one of only 2 movies I stopped watching part way through. I expected a Rodney Dangerfield movie. This was just Rodney Dangerfield put to waste in a horrible movie. He did not do any of his usual material which might have made this movie bearable. Instead it is a stupid gangster movie, with a stupid plot, bad acting and generally bad feeling throughout the picture. If you watch this movie you will wish you could have that part of your life back and erase the memories of the experience.

horrible
dishnazi6 February 2000
I am a big Rodney Dangerfeild fan and this was the worst movie I have ever seen. This piece of c**p does not deserve the minimum rating of 1 that I gave it. The biggest disappointment is when the screen says "The End" and its not over, there are 20 MORE MINUTES!!!! Not only was this movie not funny but a half hour into it I was hoping all of the characters would die so I could stop watching. I thought it was a good use of symbolism casting Joey Budafoco in this movie because just like him this movie is TRASH. If I were presented with the choice of watching this again or renting 8 minute abs with special guest host Janet Reno. Im gonna Renosize.

I will never understand how this film got made.
xxxloroxxxx1 July 2013
This is one of the worst films ever made. It ranks up there with the Killer Tomatoes movies. It's absolutely unwatchable for anyone who uses more than 0.1% of his/her brain. It's really, really hard for me to decide what's worst about it: the story, the dialog, the acting, the editing... How some other users here found it funny and even had the guts to recommend watching it is beyond belief unless they hate the rest of us and want to put us thru the same awful torture they underwent. I'm dumbfounded by how Mr. Hoge could possibly find financing to get this wreck shot. If I had read this script beforehand, I would have paid good money to ensure the flick was never made. Maybe that's how he found the financing!!! :)

As bad as it gets
briscojr13 October 2000
This movie truly has it all. Astonishingly bad acting, directing, writing, editing... it belongs very high on any list of the worst movies ever made. It doesn't even fit into that "so bad it's good" category. After an uninspired, stupid, and simply unfunny opening gag, the film goes downhill from there. The "big stars" are Dom DeLuise and Rodney Dangerfield, but they really play supporting roles to Kevin McDonald of "Kids in the Hall" fame. Kevin was hilarious on that show, but given this material I actually felt sorry for him, and everyone else involved in the film. This movie is only for anyone who wants to see just how awful a film can be. Certainly one of the worst I've ever seen.

Oil & Water does not cheese make.
Toccatta15 March 1999
Some movies are intended to be serious and end up cheesy. Some movies are intended as cheese from the beginning and work out well. Many classic movies (Attack of the Killer Tomatoes, Airplane, The Evil Dead, Rocky Horror Picture Show) fall into this category. The Godson was an obvious attempt at cheese that failed miserably. This movie wasn't cheddar... It wasn't even Velveeta... This movie was oil & water.

Some people just don't see the humor.
greenday_31623 February 2002
I have to say, this is one of the funniest movies I have seen in a long time. I can't even count the number of reviews I read for this movie calling it something like "the worst movie I've ever seen," but apparently some people just don't understand good humor. Other than Rodney Dangerfield's lines, plus a few by other actors, this movie doesn't contain a lot of straight-forward, obvious humor that a lot of people apparently look for in a movie. This movie is filled with subtle humor and little things that one has to notice in order to fully appreciate this movie. I won't comment on the plot specifically, but if you don't want some of the scenes revealed then you might not want to read this until after you see the movie. First of all, the names of the characters in this movie are outstanding. Rodney Dangerfield as "The Rodfather," Dom DeLuise as "The Oddfather," and Fabiana Udenio as "Don Na" are examples of comedic genius right there. The scene with all the Dons is great; you even get "Don King" in there. When some of the other reviewers saw this movie, they obviously didn't look for all the little intricacies that make this movie great. The showing of a small, plain, one-story house as the home of the Calzones, followed by the showing of the interior as a gigantic mansion is brilliant. The cameo by Joey Buttafuoco as himself, and Lou Ferrigno's insistance on being called "Alice" even though his character is a huge, muscular guy are two more little things you have to catch to understand the humor in this movie. I don't even know what to say about the end of the movie either, because just when you think it's over, it's really not. I laughed so hard because you think the movie is over because of Guppy's stupidity, but then the studio executive breaks through the black screen looking for more to the movie. Just hilarious. This movie is like "Office Space" where you have to notice the little things and watch the movie more than once to fully appreciate the movie and the comedic talent of the writers.

A really bad movie that I can't help but watch
Chuckles116 June 2001
This is a bad movie that I watch almost everytime it's on. And no its not one of those movies that gets better the more you watch it. It's a really bad movie with horrible acting. It's a spoof plain and simple. There are funny parts like when Guppy (Kevin McDonald) is riding in his limo and the headlights of the car behind him begin to move around. I suggest watching it so you can have the knowledge of how bad some spoofs can really be.

Barnman15 June 2000
This is the movie that made the Starz Networks what they are: the place where bad movies come home to roost. I can't believe I wasted an hour of my life watching this film, rather than learning how dairy products are made and marketed. Avoid at all costs and rent "Caddyshack".

funny as heck
toddodias22 May 2002
Regardless of what the movie critics say, I thought this was one of the funniest movies I have ever seen. The part where they tried to bank for quick cash and it wasn't the type of bank one would deposit cash into was a riot. If you want comedy, with this all star cast you cannot go wrong with this movie.

The mob would kill to get rid of this film
chelano6 August 2010
Only I was going to put this on my list of worst movies of all time, but Rodney Dangerfield had some great one liners and Dom Deluise was pretty funny as a Godfather rip off. This is a terrible slapstick comedy making fun of the Godfather. The rest of the cast was terrible and not funny at all. Kevin McDonald was the main star and he was really annoying. Fabiana Udenio just couldn't even act in this film. Then you have Lou Ferrigno who thinks he really has an acting career. I wasn't really expecting much when watching this film. But I didn't think it would be this bad. The story was just stupid and the references to other mob type films were really stupid. In fact I felt a bit smarter once the movie was over because it was done and out of my life. Did that sound harsh? OK, then watch the film and let me know what you think. Dangerfield and DeLuise must of been hurting on money because great comedic geniuses like that would of never done this movie. Oh well, I watched it and it is over now.

Few funny gags, but very inconsistent
mattymatt4ever29 March 2001
I can't lie that I laughed during this movie, but far from how much I expected. First of all, I'd like to establish that even though Rodney Dangerfield has top billing--he only appears in about 20 percent of the film. And he has most of the funny lines. I liked the scene where he came out with a bandage over his pinky finger and said: "I told my wife I hurt my little pinky. She said, 'It's OK. We're not having sex tonight.'"

Kevin McDonald is the real star, and gets frightfully annoying at times. He was funny on "Kids in the Hall," but he overacts way way too much in this one. You just want to shoot him with a tranquilizer dart.

I thought there was great comic opportunity for a film that spoofs Mafia flicks. But it's totally wasted with such flat gags. For example when they were spoofing the famous scene in "Goodfellas" where Joe Pesci gives that "Do you think I'm funny?" speech. However, the chick they used in that movie is REALLY REALLY hot. But that's no compensation. If she got naked...maybe.

"The Godson" definitely has its moments. But they're wedged between the most brainless, flat, annoying, sometimes disgusting gags. If those gags weren't torcherous and simply devoid of laughs, I might regard this movie as OK. But those gags are so tedious and mind-numbing that they drown out the few laughs that do exist--so much that I have no choice but to regard it as awful.

No business watching these family's businesses
bkoganbing15 June 2016
The Godson is an alleged satire on the recent spate of gangster type films that started with The Godfather. You'll recognize several recent films as you watch this.

Looking at this film I was so missing the touch of someone like Mel Brooks. I wouldn't be surprised if this was something he might have passed on.

Dom DeLuise doing a nightclub impression of Marlon Brando and Rodney Dangerfield as a gangster who gets no respect are a pair of Mafia Dons and rivals. Things may go bad for these two families as Richard Castellano said in The Godfather these blood feuds are just part of the game and occur in cycles.

But this one may never get off the ground as their kids, wimpy Kevin McDonald from Kids In The Hall as DeLuise's third son and heir and Fabiana Udenio as Dangerfield's daughter do a Romeo and Juliet thing. Will the Montague and Capulet thing be stopped?

When beautiful Fabiana Udenio has to perform some nasty bodily functions to get a laugh, you know you have a stinkeroo on your hands.

Just stupid!!
Marynewcomb201320 January 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I have seen some pretty good parities and I have seen some awful ones!! This movie falls in the worst!! It has a couple good actors like Don & Rodney & even they couldn't help this!! The beginning is what I will discuss to give you an idea of how stupid it is!! The one son is having sex as the movie starts & he gets stabbed in the back. He jumps up like he was poked with a finger!! He gets shot many times and still stands like he was pelted with fly's!! He jumps out the window that's several stories up & gets up like he tripped when he finally lands!! As I'm saying, all this & he is still alive!!! You see how the rest of this stupid movie goes!! Those that gave this good reviews are mindless drones!! Stupidity entertains them!! Shows why our country has ended up like it is now!!

Even Dangerfield couldn't save this
jeremy-hammond-27 June 2021
I was flipping through, saw the names Dom DeLuise and Rodney Dangerfield, Lou Gehrig I and Irwin Keyes. Read the premise, and thought hell, it was worth a shot. What a disappointment. Dangerfield was the only thing GOOD about this movie, but sadly, it wasn't enough.

The Oddfather Movie
makiprettywoman35 June 2013
Warning: Spoilers
I saw on netflix this movie called "The Godson." The Godson is suppose to beparody of famous mob movies like The Godfather and Scarface. You haveDom Delisie who play The Oddfather, Rodney Dangerfield as The Rodfatherand Kevin McDonald as Guppy Calzone. The movie starts out with The Oddfather. He has son who they think has died but once they bury him hereally isn't dead. He supposedly died because he tripped and his head hit on a fire hydrant. This leads to the Oddfather choosing his other son Guppy Calzone to be the head of their crime family. Just the though of someone dying by hitting their head on a fire hydrant sounds absurd. This is one of these low budget movies where there isn't very good acting. The way people say they deliver their lines it doesn't sound right. You can tell there is something wrong with the movie.

If anyone has seen this movie they probably thought it could be good because Rodney Dangerfield is in. It takes at least 20 to 30 minutes before you get see to Rodney Dangerfield in this movie. He provides this movie with some of his usual shtick. You would think with The Godson being a spoof movie they would be trying to make a funny movie. Parts of the movie are stupid in which there is nothing that is funny. Some of the stuff in this movie is really absurd. I thought parts of the movie were funny. If you can accept what you are being given then this movie isn't so bad.

The "God" damn best movie!
dhagar9 July 2000
This has got to be one of the best movies I've seen. You should only watch it if you're in the mood for a good parody. All those people who said that it was the worst movie they've seen, live a very sheltered life!

All the play on humour, stupid jokes, make this movie awesomely funny. If there was a word that could describe this movie it would be funnyrifictastic!

Everytime I watch this movie, I pick up something I didn't see before. Believe me, this movie gets funnier the more times you watch it. Go rent it!

Silly, yet amusing parody
faincut12 April 2002
I have seen better parodies on the Godfather trilogy. This one is cute and harmless. It has a couple of funny jokes, but basically the movie doesn't deliver what it should. This movie is more of TV movie you catch while sitting bored at bed with the flew, looking for something to cheer you up. That is what happened to me. I find it extremely difficult to realize who will go to see it at the cinema or rent it on DVD. I don't think the lead was so good, maybe if they would bring someone more experienced to play the lead the movie would be what 'spaceballs' is to 'star wars'.

I liked the burp scene... :) 6 of 10

Worst movie ever
zutrov27 January 2002
I am glad that I saw this movie so that I may be able to greater appreciate every other piece of cinema that has ever existed. This film did not make me laugh at all throughout it's seemingly endless running time. I fail to comprehend how the stars of this movie, which are all funny guys, could not alter the story at all to make the movie in the least bit humorous. I say this because I know that if Rodney Dangerfield or MacDonald had made any impact on the story, this film would would be infinitely more entertaining. I am able to accurately use the figure of infinity because as it stands, this film's entertainment value is 0, if not less, therefore, any improvement at all would be indeterminably large.
