I have not yet found a bad film put out by Alex De La Iglesia, and I enjoyed this one quite a lot. The story begins with two men who were a famous comedy team back in the 70's, who are doing a New Year's Eve show and go out with a bang. Then we go to one big long flashback of how they got to this point. Imagine a more hip and modern Laurel and Hardy that hate each other's guts, and you'll sort of get the idea. Nino is a singer and Bruno is a bartender at some little watering hole in the middle of nowhere, and they run afoul of a bunch of militia men when Nino accidentally kills the squad's mascot by hitting it on the head with a microphone (a goat, that is). From there they're pushed out into the world and try their hand at stand-up comedy, but they're not too successful at first until Bruno figures out that slapping Nino is funny, and that becomes a running gag throughout the film. After a while Nino develops a resentment to being the one that gets slapped all the time and finds ways to get back at Bruno, which leads to an ever-escalating animosity between the two, which provides ample entertainment for the viewer. As with most of De La Ilgesia's films the comedic timing and black humor in this are excellent, and yet the ending is almost rather sad that things have come to what they have. If you have seen other films by this director and liked them then this is of course highly recommended, if not, well, then what are you waiting for? 8 out of 10, great stuff.
