Sex & Nudity

  • During a very abstract sequence a vagina appears on the forehead of a female character. This is intended to be surreal and not sexualised but it is drawn to be very detailed.
  • The film opens with a 14 year old boy watching over his comatose female friend in hospital. He turns her over and her top pops open revealing her breasts. The scene cuts away and soon cuts back to the boy, whose hand is covered by his semen, disgusted at his own actions.
  • In the final portions of the film, there is a short portion in which a woman's nude breasts are shown.
  • A naked teenager is shown standing in front of an adult female. Her bare buttocks are shown, as well as as her breasts, but genitalia isn't shown. He extends his hand and grabs her breast, his hand inserts in her body as if he was looking something inside her body, no blood shown. Later in the film, the man's hand is severed, again no blood shown. This scene can be interpreted as sexual assault.
  • In one scene, a teenage boy watches two young adults having passionate sex, however, only loud moans are heard and the woman's raised feet are shown moving from the thrusts during intercourse. There are also talks about being a whole week in bed together, alluding to almost nonstop sex for several days straight. Sexual intercourse is heavily implied.
  • An abstract sequence shows what looks like naked girls in cell-shading animation or rotoscoped, however it is very quick and hard to make out.

Violence & Gore

  • A girl's arm randomly falls off entirely as her still-living body begins to break down. This scene is mirrored later in the movie with a very similar shot.
  • A scene shows eye mutilation directly on screen which may be very disturbing to some viewers.
  • The last 10 minutes of the first part are incredibly violent, brutal and grisly. Dismemberment, cannibalism, torture and mutilation are showed graphically.
  • The first half of the film contains frequent depictions of violence. The second half contains more abstract violence.
  • A teenage boy has a gun put to the back of his head and is about to be killed. He is rescued. His saviour knocks the man with the gun against the wall and, while off-screen, shoots them through the head from the chin. We see the unit's crumpled body with a large streak of blood running down the wall behind it.
  • There is combat between the humanoid mechas. This is the goriest scene in the film, as heads get crushed, limbs are torn off and red liquid (not technically blood, but the resemblance is very obvious) sprays and splatters everywhere. One mecha ends up being graphically disemboweled and eaten alive with its pilot still inside, who appears to be feeling effects from their mecha being torn apart.
  • A woman is shot by a man. No graphic violence here, but her body tumbles into the water nearby from the impact of the blast.

Profanity

  • The Netflix version of the film contains none of the swearing, whether dubbed or subtitled.
  • "Fuck" is used once in the subtitles and English dub.
  • Two uses of "bastard", and possibly other occasional profanities.

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • None, but the second half features constant esoteric and psychedelic imagery which some might associate with drugs.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • Some scenes contains strong flashing images
  • This is a very depressing, dark and surreal film. Some of the imagery can unsettle viewers and the tone of the film at times can definitely upset people.
  • There is a very disheartening level of violence against the human body, starting from nearly the beginning. Soldiers are ruthless and it is definitely MA for a good reason. If you can't stand extreme gore and violence, you may want to reconsider this film.
  • In the opening scene, some people can interpret that there was a suicide attempt via drowning, thought this is all speculation.
  • The tone of the movie is often dark and depressing, as there is a steady stream of unsettling imagery occurring onscreen.
  • Contains intense and abstract themes as well as imagery. The majority of the second half of the movie is very abstract and surreal.
  • A scene early on in when a main character masturbates over the comatose body of a colleague.

Spoilers

The Parents Guide items below may give away important plot points.

Sex & Nudity

  • Misato kisses Shinji and promises that the two of them will have sex later when he gets back ("That was a grown-up kiss. We'll do the rest when you get back."), though she likely knows that this will not happen, and is using it only as a trick to make him step backwards into an elevator.
  • A gargantuan male and female personification of a creature are joined together at the groin; they appear to share the lower body. Both are nude. We see the girl's breasts, and the male's torso, in addition to a non-graphic outline of his penis.
  • In another abstract sequence, a naked girl is shown on top of a boy. No genitalia is shown but a penetration may be implied in one shot. Her hands are inside the boy's chest. There is no thrusting whatsoever, since it possibly represents the concept of two people connecting and becoming one during sexual intercourse.

Violence & Gore

  • A humanoid mecha is mercilessly attacked. A spear pierces its eye. It is later eaten alive by other mechas with humanoid organs and extreme gore that is very disturbing. Its remains including brain matter and eyes torn out. This scene is very disturbing and even though animated, can be difficult to watch.
  • A scene involving combat units who are sent into the base where the main characters work and kill those who stand in their way. A guard is caught from behind and stabbed in the back with a knife. Various personnel members are shot to death. One or more offscreen members scream while being torched by an onscreen combat unit wielding a flamethrower. The unit is ordered to "Hit 'em again" and does so, resulting in more screaming.
  • A city is destroyed by an atomic weapon, it is unclear if there are any casualties, as it was evacuated earlier in the TV series the movie is based on.
  • A man's forearm is swallowed up inside the belly of a teenage girl after she rejects being bonded with an entity trapped in his hand. It isn't graphic. The same man dies a surreal death when a giant being bites his body in half - the lower half can be seen standing upright moments later.
  • After being comforted by specters of their friends, family, and desires, several characters literally explode on-screen in a burst of orange fluid. It is heavily implied the same thing happens to the entire population of Earth.
  • Near the end of the movie, the throat of a gigantic creature shaped like a woman gets "slit" and blood-like liquid bursts out. A few moments later the creature's body decays and falls to pieces. Not very graphic but may be strong in impact nonetheless.
  • A teenage boy attempts to strangle a girl twice, not graphic or bloody, but depicts his aggressive nature. The first time it's clearly stated that it happened in a simulated reality or a dreamlike state. The second time, it's implied to be real but after the whole human polulation have been erradicated, and they are the last/first humans on Earth.

Profanity

  • In the Hospital scene at the beginning of the movie, Shinji says "I'm so fucked up." The F-bomb was added in the Manga dub to increase the emotional distress of the scene. In the original Japanese, the line translates to "I'm the lowest of the low." The Netflix version uses the original line in both sub and the newly-produced dub.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • In one scene, a girl has a giant lance poked into her mecha's face into the eye. She loses her left eye as a result, and we see her delivering a realistic and excruciatingly chilling, blood-curdling scream of horrible agony as she covers her eye with her hand. This scene is very disturbing, and the character being injured is one of the main characters which can be distressing.
  • The movie, especially the second half revolves around the main character having a mental breakdown.
  • At the end of the movie, as the world is getting covered in orange fluid, faint screams can be heard of torment and panic.
  • The ending is very depressing.
  • The military assault on the NERV HQ has an almost genocidal feeling to it. People are seen getting mercilessly slaughtered: shot, stabbed, burned with flamethrowers (though offscreen) and more.
  • A teenage girl's mecha is disemboweled, and it is clear that she is feeling the pain. This scene can be distressing, as it occurs after the pilot has a small redeeming epiphany.
  • Towards the end of the movie, humans explode, turning into a orange fluid. It is heavily implied the same thing happens to every other living thing on Earth, thus creating an Apocalypse. It could be intense or upsetting for many viewers.
