Nearly 70 percent of L.A. Weekly’s editorial staff — including film critic April Wolfe — was laid off on November 29, the day the beloved alternative newspaper was officially purchased by Semanal Media. The Los Angeles Times reported nine members from the 13-person editorial team were dismissed, among them all top editors (even editor-in-chief Mara Shalhoup); publisher Matt Cooperstein was also terminated. On Twitter, Shalhoup likened the layoff to a “Game of Thrones” bloodbath.
We were expecting there to be some pain with the sale of @LAWeekly. But we weren’t expecting the Red Wedding. That’s how deep the cuts are. 1/
— Mara Shalhoup (@mshalhoup) November 29, 2017
The impending sale was confirmed on October 18 by the La Times, which dubbed the now-owner “a mysterious new company” in its headline. Semanal Media was formed explicitly to buy L.A. Weekly from dwindling Voice Media, the publishing entity that has unloaded S.F. Weekly, O.

Welcome to the final trailer for Pixar's Cars 3. It's called "The Limit" and it features the classic Eagles song "Take it To the Limit". It also includes a voiceover from Paul Newman who starred in the original Cars movie as Doc Hudson. He passed away back in 2008, and this trailer uses unused lines that he recorded for the first film.
I really loved this last trailer because it wonderfully captures the spirit of the story they are telling in this world. The Eagles song just fits it so perfectly and it really brings out the emotion. This is my favorite trailer that's been released for the film so far.
Blindsided by a new generation of blazing-fast racers, the legendary Lightning McQueen (voice of Owen Wilson) is suddenly pushed out of the sport he loves. To get back in the game, he will need the help of an eager young race technician,...

While it.s far from a sure thing that there will even be a Magic Mike 3, that hasn.t stopped Channing Tatum from doing a little dream casting for himself. In a recent interview doing promotion for his new movie, Hail, Caesar, Tatum came to the realization that a perfect new cast member for the next outing would be one of his co-stars, the phenomenal George Clooney. The two were making media appearances together promoting Caesar when the interviewer from Yahoo asked Channing Tatum if he had spoken to Clooney about joining him for a Magic Mike sequel. At first the two actors had a good laugh about how it was already a done deal. Clooney even gave the film it.s new subtitle, Magic Mike: Take it to the Limit, before Tatum actually appeared to realize that it might not be a terrible idea. Ultimately, he just wants...

O, Brazen Age
Written and Directed by Alexander Carson
Canada, 2015
O, Brazen Age is one of those films that requires a secondary viewing. An intriguing blend of narrative, literature, self-reflection, and friendship, all bound together with a loose, silver cord of time, it’s an incredibly unique, personal debut feature from Alexander Carson.
The loose plot is stitched together around a group of artists, old friends who shift in and out of each other’s lives. Jealousy, depression, lust, ennui; each person struggles with their own tenuous grasp on life, and the film reveals the various hearts beating within the group in a nonlinear fashion, overlapping vignettes like Venn diagrams. With five major sections, themselves reminiscent of poems torn apart and reassembled:
i. O Wonder
ii. And when the night darkens the streets
iii. Rather like a dream
iv. Take it to the limit
v. Forever strangers
The vignettes are...

New York — Consider how unusual it is for the exact breaking point of a big-time rock band to be chronicled on film.
The Beatles' "Let it Be" showed a slow disintegration. For the Eagles, the end came abruptly at a political fundraiser in 1980. Don Felder didn't want to be there. Glenn Frey didn't like his attitude. Add years of simmering resentment and, as they performed, threats exchanged under the music. Fists didn't fly, but by the time each stalked into separate limousines, the Eagles were toast for 14 years.
It's one of the fascinating moments in "History of the Eagles," a documentary that airs on Showtime Friday and Saturday. The film has two parts just like the band, which has been together again since 1994.
Frey, 64, said it was time to get the story on film while the health and memories of everyone involved were intact. The Eagles courted filmmaker Alex Gibney,...

Babes in Toyland (aka March of Wooden Soldiers) – Gus Meins, Charley Rogers (1932)
“Gus Meins and Charley Rogers’ masterpiece. The comedic timing and images have passed the test of time… that poor monkey playing a bastard Mickey Mouse. And even in this age of advanced make-up and computer effects, show a child that Bogeymen sequence and I guarantee there will be nightmares.“
Bad Lieutenant – Abel Ferrara (1990)
