ITN (Independent Television News, now ITV News) launched in 1955 and was owned by all ITV franchises, including Associated-Rediffusion.
In 1993, ITN became owned by ITV as a whole, rather than the individual franchises.
Alastair Burnet, who joined ITN in 1955, stayed there for 36 years until his retirement in 1991, and his last bulletin was the News at Ten.
When News at Ten was axed in 1999, the viewer petitions and outrages eventually caused it to return two years later.
