As part of the press tour for his new film "Creed III" -- whose fight scenes bring the franchise into anime territory -- Michael B. Jordan listed his five favorite anime series on BBC Radio 1: "'One Piece,'" "Dragon Ball," "Naruto," "Bleach," and "Hunter x Hunter." These are all worthy picks, even though it "would take the average person over 957 hours ... to complete Jordan's top five anime recommendations," as Isaiah Colbert said at Kotaku. "One Piece" has lasted for over a thousand episodes. "Dragon Ball" remains one of the most popular anime ever. "Naruto" featured some of the wildest fight scenes in anime history, while "Bleach" at its best was just cool. "Hunter x Hunter" is messier, spanning two adaptations and a source comic that has yet to finish. But its creator Yoshiharu Togashi has over 3 million followers on Twitter, and his dedicated fans haven't given up on him yet.

The climax of "Creed III" brings a whole new visual language to the series. As Adonis (Michael B. Jordan) and Damian Anderson (Jonathan Majors) box for the title of world champion, we enter their shared headspace. The crowd disappears and the sounds of their cheering drop out, leaving just the two former friends to confront each other. The imagery becomes surreal: the borders of the ring become prison bars, reflecting Damian's bitterness about how much of his life was wasted in a cell. Throughout the fight, whenever one boxer lands a blow, the scene goes into slow motion emphasizing specific strikes.
The influence for this type of filmmaking is anime action scenes. Jordan, the star of this franchise and now its director too, is the king of the weebs. In an interview with Polygon, Jordan cited his favorite anime, "Naruto Shippuden," as the primary inspiration for the climax of "Creed III." After all,...

Many anime series come and go without leaving a lasting mark on the industry. Since it premiered in 1992, however, Yu Yu Hakusho remains one of the most talked about battle shonen shows more than 30 years later. Accordingly, it’s quite fitting that a robust Blu-ray box set is being released to celebrate the anime’s legacy on its 30th anniversary.
Yu Yu Hakusho chronicles Yusuke Urameshi’s earnest evolution from a juvenile delinquent to a courageous warrior who becomes humanity’s greatest defense against the spirit world. Yu Yu Hakusho ran for 112 episodes, became a flagship program for Funimation after the company started to branch out and dub series beyond Dragon Ball, as well as a reliable program in Cartoon Network’s Toonami anime block for four years. Yu Yu Hakusho’s two supplemental Ova installments from 2018, “Two Shot” and “All or Nothing,” will finally be dubbed for the first...

Despite the fiasco that was Netflix's "Cowboy Bebop" live-action series and the atrocity that was their previous "Death Note" live-action movie, it seems the streaming service is determined to keep making live-action anime adaptations until something sticks. Indeed, they currently have several live-action anime re-imaginings in some stage of development, including projects based on "My Hero Academia," "One Piece," and "Yu Yu Hakusho."
To be fair, these are all sensible choices for live-action adaptations; each of these properties are incredibly popular and play into character archetypes, themes, and stories that resonate across the globe. "My Hero Academia" is literally about superheroes (and superheroes are very hot right now), while the other two are action-adventure stories with supernatural elements and tons of fights and comedic moments alike -- not to mention, they also feature characters with superpowers.

In another boost to its growing Japanese content slate, Netflix has greenlit a live-action movie adaptation of the classic Japanese manga City Hunter. Japanese leading man Ryohei Suzuki (Tokyo Mer, Segodon) has signed on to star in the iconic role of Ryo Saeba, with filmmaker Yuichi Sato (Kisaragi, Strawberry Nights and The End of the Tiny World) onboard to direct.
Created by manga artist Tsukasa Hojo, City Hunter was a staple of Japanese pop culture throughout the 1980s, selling over 50 million copies around the world. The franchise spawned a popular anime series and numerous feature-length adaptations, including movies made in Hong Kong (one starring Jackie Chan), France and mainland China, but this will be there first time the property is adapted as a live-action film in its native Japan.
Netflix describes the project as “a modern-day updated version of the manga, set in the bustling streets of Shinjuku.

"My Hero Academia" is one of the most popular manga and anime around often thought of as a successor to the "Big Three" of manga. The manga is consistently on top sales lists, and the anime remains as popular as ever even after six seasons.
It is easy to see why. The story, originally created by Kōhei Horikoshi, brings the best tropes of a shonen action manga into the world of comic book superheroes, taking inspiration from classic Marvel comics, especially "Spider-Man" ones. "My Hero Academia" takes place in a world where 80 population has some kind of superpower, or "quirk." We focus on Midoriya Izuku, a kid born without powers, but who yearns more than anything to follow in the footsteps of Japan's greatest hero, All Might (essentially the show's answer to Superman and Captain America). When he is accepted into a prestigious academy for superheroes, he decides to become the number one hero,...

If you regularly follow anime at all, you've almost certainly seen something about "Chainsaw Man." Whether it's the 18 million copies of the manga in circulation, cosplayers in simple black suits, or viral art of cute chainsaw dogs, the series has been a runaway train of popularity since it debuted in December 2018.
"Chainsaw Man" follows Denji, a young man saddled with debt whose only friend is a tiny chainsaw-faced devil named Pochita. When Denji is marked more profitable dead than alive by his debtors, Pochita willingly becomes his new heart, and Denji is reborn as the human-devil hybrid Chainsaw Man. That makes him a valuable asset to the Public Safety Devil Hunters, who give Denji a choice: join them and help keep the populace safe from devils or be put down like one.
Now that the anime is finally here, new audiences are getting a chance to find out what all the hype's about.

In a boost to its Japanese content ambitions, Netflix has signed a five-year strategic partnership with The Seven, a production company subsidiary of Tokyo Broadcasting System Holdings (TBS Holdings). Under the agreement, The Seven’s creative team “will produce multiple original live-action titles that will be exclusively available to Netflix,” the two partners said Tuesday. Financial terms were not disclosed.
The new agreement builds on prior work Netflix has done both with TBS and The Seven’s key creative team. Akira Morii, who leads development and production at The Seven, recently collaborated closely with the streamer as the driving producer behind its breakout Japanese original Alice in Borderland, which is set to return for a second season next month. Netflix has also picked up several TBS shows for its service, including Japan Sinks: People of Hope, The Future Diary, and Let’s Get Divorced.

"Bleach" began its run in the popular comics magazine Shonen Jump in August 2001. It was adapted into an anime three years later in October 2004, and quickly became one of the most popular anime and manga in its age bracket. Fans would refer to "Bleach" and its two Jump peers, "Naruto" and "One Piece," as the Big Three.
"Bleach" always boasted the lowest sales numbers of the three, especially in Japan where "One Piece" was king. But "Bleach" made up for this by being the most stylish comic of its day. Its character designs, fight sequences and paneling had a certain je ne sais quoi that kept it relevant against heavier hitting opponents in the magazine. The fact that its hero, Ichigo, was a jaded teenager from the beginning, rather than a rambunctious child like Naruto or Luffy, appealed to a fanbase that was going through its own adolescence.

Netflix is to lease two sound stages at Toho Studios in order to help the streaming platform expand its production of original Japanese content.
The move was announced Thursday (local time) in a blog post by Ozawa Teiji, Netflix’s manager for production management and live action in Japan.
The streamer will have access to both Stage 7 and Stage 10, and several in-studio facilities within Toho Studios, which is located in central suburban Setagaya Ward in Tokyo. The facilities have previously been home to Kurosawa Akira’s “Seven Samurai,” and the Godzilla film series.
The deal kicks off from April and was described as running across “several years.” Upcoming shows “Yu Yu Hakusho,” a live action series derived from a manga about a teenager and an underground detective, and “Sanctuary,” a gritty look into the underbelly of professional sumo, will be the first to occupy the studios.

The past decade has seen anime’s popularity increase in dramatic ways, whether through a much broader spectrum of series receiving dubs, the growing success of anime feature films in theaters, or the sudden prominence of streaming services. There’s never been a better time to be an anime fan and the medium has become more accessible than ever. There’s a lot of anime out there, but the wealth of new series can often blend together or not be given a fair chance. Additionally, there are definitely certain types of anime that are more prominently showcased outside of Japan.

Simply reading the premise of Yu Yu Hakusho is enough to think that it might make a decent movie or, in this case, a compelling live-action series as a few others appear to think, but the worry over CG and practical effects is one that’s fairly valid since the difference between the two is quite easy to spot sometimes. But any story that begins with a character having to die to push the narrative forward is bound to be at least a little interesting since one would think that sacrificing yourself to save another would be something that might happen

There’s been a growing trend of some of the most popular anime from the ’90s and early 2000s returning with legacy sequels and modern reboots. It’s an exciting time for anime and this approach has brought back audiences who may have wandered away but are curious to get continuations to some of the favorite series from their youth. InuYasha, an anime that aired nearly 200 episodes since its debut during the height of the anime invasion of America, is the latest series to get such a treatment. InuYasha concluded back in 2010, but Rumiko Takahashi, the creator of the series has just announced, Yashahime: Princess Half-Demon, a sequel series that will center around the children of the characters from the original InuYasha.

We’ve now seen a couple of instances of filmmakers wanting to take an anime show and turn it into a live-action movie, and every time it has been a flop. The obvious examples are of course The Last Airbender and Dragonball Evolution. However, what if people did these adaptations right? We picked some of our favorite anime shows that could potentially pull off the live-action treatment.
