Trivialidades:

Much of the military action is based on the battle of Cowpens. The character of Tavington being based on Banestre Tarleton; the mixture of militia and Continental army in the battle, knowing that the militia had a reputation of not holding and using that to lure the British in. The militia only firing a couple of volleys before a planned retreat to a secondary line composed of the Continental army. The Continental army firing and then performing a bayonet charge. These are the basics of the battle of Cowpens and the basics of the military action at the end of the movie.

Goofs:

Continuity: When Benjamin Martin is walking out of the fort with his men, Tavington calls to him. After Tavington's comment a close up on Gabriel Martin's face reveals a seated John Billings, but when the camera returns to Martin and Tavington, Billings is still attempting to mount the horse.

Power-packed and skillfully told

It's not like we've never seen the whole vengeance angle before -- the first I recall was "The Outlaw Josey Wales" -- but I found myself swept up in the period of "The Patriot." I've no idea of the historical accuracy or likelihood of the situations or battle scenes, but the story was compelling, intense, and nerve-twisting for most (I say most) of its 3-hour duration. We've also seen the contorted, tormented face of Mel Gibson before, but it is nonetheless satisfying given the context and worthy of many a "huzzah." No Oscar material within, I'd say, and still the film often hits you like a cannonball to the forehead.
