Sex & Nudity

  • Sonya Blade's outfit is slightly revealing and skintight.

Violence & Gore

  • There is no blood in the Super Nintendo version. And in the Sega Genesis version, you need to enter a cheat code to get the blood.
  • The game focuses on continuous one-on-one fights to the death. Impacts with punches, kicks and various weapons result in a spatter of blood.
  • Mortal Kombat is widely known for its (almost) unprecedented levels of blood and gore, especially with its "Fatality" moves, where you can deal a brutal finishing move to your opponent after his health is at 0. These include:
  • Sonya Blade: Blows a kiss, shooting a fireball which reduces the opponent to a skeleton.
  • Scorpion: Removes his mask, revealing his skull, then breathes fire producing the same effect.
  • Liu Kang: Does a cartwheel towards the opponent and then does a huge uppercut, sending him flying up above the screen and then back down, splashing blood as he/she lands.
  • Kano: Plunges his fist into the opponent and tears his heart out, and then holds it up for the audience to see.
  • Johnny Cage: Uppercuts the opponent in the head, causing it to detach and fly through the air as it showers the ground with blood.
  • Sub-Zero: Yanks out the opponent's head with the spinal column still attached.
  • Raiden: Uses lightning to make the enemy's head explode.
  • Ending with an uppercut in the Pit: Sends enemy flying similarly to Liu Kang, but upon reentry he/she falls down past the ground into a spiked pit, where severed heads can be seen on the spikes.
  • Raiden's censored lightning causes a skeleton effect similar to that of Sonya and Scorpion.
  • Johnny Cage's decapitating uppercut is replaced by a Shadow Kick (Genesis and Game Gear ports) or sticking his entire good into his opponent's chest (Super NES port).
  • Sub-Zero instead simply uppercuts his opponent (Genesis and Game Gear ports), freezes the other player in a block of ice and then shatters it (Super NES port), or sliding towards his opponent with an extended fist smashing into his chest (Game Boy port)
  • Kano's censored fatalities, for the Genesis and Super NES ports, include the same heart-ripping attack, but the heart is instead grey and unbeating. In the Game Boy port, he slides on one foot to his opponent before delivering a roundhouse kick to the head.

Profanity

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • When the game first came out, the graphic violence and fatalities shook the foundation of so many that it led to the establishment of the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB). Parents were outraged and politicians petitioned against its existence and how it affects society as a whole, claiming that games like this leads to further criminal activity and actual acts of violence. This is seen as one of the most shocking and controversial games of all time.
