Elle King has released a three-track EP of demos titled Elle King: In Isolation — recorded, as you might imagine, while quarantining in LA during the Covid-19 pandemic.
“So many questions have begun to blossom within me through this time of isolation,” King wrote in a statement on the EP. “From the rug being ripped out from underneath to the burst of a new idea…isn’t the world strange? When we think of the state of it, have we upheld the promise to love and nurture it? What is it...

Come Under My Spell
(dir: Carlos Tobalina, 1979)
“The film that will bring you up to a joy you’re paying for!”
The film opens up in hip and swinging San Fransisco and instantly we are introduced to some heavy student action. Before the memories of university life get the better of me (yeah right!), we are introduced Fernando, played by Fernando Fortes (I Am Always Ready). Fernando is a foreign exchange student who really, really like animals! Unfortunately for him, he hasn’t had any human action since arriving in America. Thankfully, his friend Dave, played by Blair Harris (Teeny Buns) is on hand to try and rectify that. He sets Fernando up with a threesome, but it doesn’t go to plan. Being the good friend that he is, Dave decides to cheer him up by buying a cheap copy of a sexual hypnotism book. After studying hard through the power of montage,...

Hanukkah is halfway over and Christmas is next week. Traditionally, columnists with no ideas use this as an opportunity to recommend gift ideas that, ideally, benefits themselves, their families or their friends.
Here’s the thing. I don’t know your gift-giving needs. I don’t know your friends. I don’t know your tastes, and your budget is none of my business. These are books that, if I didn’t already own them and love them, I would want to get. If they are new to you, I envy the good times you have ahead.
I want to start off with Mimi Pond because, well, I know her a little bit and this will make me seem important. She and I both freelanced for the fashion section of The Village Voice back in the late seventies and early eighties. Fashion was like the ugly stepchild at the paper, not...

Eight noir novels to help fill your endless summer with a sense of overwhelming dread and paranoia.
Okay, so I’m the professor who wakes up three weeks before the end of the semester and hits everybody over the head with a pile of mandatory reading assignments that everybody has to crowbar in between midnight finals cram sessions and kegstands, but you know, only if they hope to make it out with a passing grade.
My list isn’t filled with breezy bicycle rides through rural Tuscany. Not a happy ending in the bunch. But let’s face it, unless you live in the fourteen square-block section of SoCal that stayed in the mid-sixties to upper seventies range this summer, you’re hiding in your goddamn house waiting for that flaming orb in the sky to duck under the horizon once and for all.
So here are eight books to...

If you follow the development of major motion pictures, you may know that "Prometheus" was first conceived as an unambiguous prequel to "Alien." After a time, director Ridley Scott decided this wasn't a good idea, so he gave an already-written script to Damon Lindelof for a thorough revision.
We'll never know why decided against making it an official prequel, though it might be that since "Aliens" followed "Alien" he'd have to call this new one "Alie." And that would just look weird.
As filming progressed, it was admitted that "Prometheus" was in the shared universe with "Alien." Now that I've seen the film, I'm here to tell you this is all needless jibber-jabber. There are similarities with the "Alien" films both big and small and, luckily, I was paying close enough attention that I can share them with you now.
Warning: Below are spoilers that will enter your system and burst out of your chest.

It’s hard to say what genre British author Jasper Fforde would be categorized as his work contains elements of metafiction, parody, and fantasy. Then there’s the profusion of literary words, allusions and the general play on traditional genres. Perhaps the best way to explain him and his novels is he’s the love child of Douglas Adams and Terry Pratchett, with Monty Python is his grandfather.
Once working in the British film industry as a focus puller for such movies as The Trial, Quills, GoldenEye, and Entrapment, he published his first novel, The Eyre Affair, in 2001 (after 76 rejections slips for one book that would be eventually be released in 2005). That book spanned a lot of genres, including fantasy, science fiction, mystery, satire, romance, and thriller. The Eyre Affair introduced the readers to “literary” detective Thursday Next. Set in an alternate/parallel England of 1985 it finds a country that...
