Doco-drama with darkly comic tone
pauluswiggus29 March 2021
This short is set in rural Yugoslavia and shows a community that is replacing their horses with motor vehicles. There is no dialogue and no real characters as such, just a series of farmers who start bringing their produce to town/market in the cars and trucks. They are shown to be happy with this development, but these scenes are intercut with shots of horses being prepared to be killed and wagons being dismantled. The upbeat music (combined with the happy expressions), creates a darkly-comic tragedy as we see that fate of the horses (and by extension the former way of life of the community). Nicely put together for a short film, and a sign of things to come from the director, it terms of style and tone.
