“Loving Vincent” has become the surprise animated indie hit of the season, reaching $20 million worldwide at the box office and grabbing a Golden Globe nomination. An Oscar nom could follow as a result of its innovative experiment in hand-animating 65,000 frames of oil paintings, mimicking Vincent van Gogh’s bold colors and expressive brush strokes.

But that’s only part of it. By framing it as a speculative murder mystery shot with live-action performances (headlined by Saoirse Ronan and Aidan Turner), directors Dorota Kobiela and Hugh Welchman have created a uniquely immersive animated experience. Their team of 125 painters integrated the performances into the oil painting style of animation through a combination of computer compositing and rotoscoping, thereby achieving a remarkable seven-year, $5.5 million production. The strikingly beautiful animated film Loving Vincent is described as “the world’s first fully oil painted feature film.” That description means a group of artists hand-painted the images that fill this stunningly beautiful film. This intriguing, ambitious film goes a step further and puts animated actors into Vincent Van Gogh’s paintings, which are used as the setting to explore the artist’s life and work through a mystery tale investigating his death. The result is not only gorgeous but an appealing fact-and-fiction tale through which the film recounts the famous artist’s life and art.

With every frame hand-crafted by a team of artists, Loving Vincent is a fitting tribute to its complex subject. Its makers explain how they recreated his bewitching brushwork
Surrounded by thousands of reproductions on the walls of student bedrooms, cafes and hospital corridors, it’s easy to lose sight of what Vincent Van Gogh’s paintings actually look like: the brushwork, the paint, the expressiveness. Nor quite how many paintings he actually produced – more than 860 in just nine years – beyond the well-known sunflowers, wheatfields, cafes and woolly-necked self-portraits.
But giving Vincent a run for his money – in terms of output at least – is a new film by artist, writer and director Dorota Kobiela and co-director Hugh Welchman, that literally paints the imagined story of Van Gogh’s last days. It’s an extraordinary concept. “Everything was a painting on canvas,” says Welchman. “No tracing, no nothing. The opening shot, where...

Imagine finding one of van Gogh’s early sketches for “Starry Night,” or a rough draft of Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby. For anyone who loves music, the mammoth 50th anniversary reissue of the Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band is just as good—if not better. The expanded package includes nearly two hours worth of outtakes from the groundbreaking 1967 sessions, offering not only an alternate-universe look at some of the most beloved tracks in the rock canon, but also a fascinating fly-on-the-wall view of four young artists at the height of their power.

To this day Van Gogh’s painting Starry Night remains one of the most famous paintings in history. Artists have been recreating it for years and the story of its inception and significance will always remain a fascinating tale of art. While the painting itself is as interesting as its ever been, so too are the newer creations artists have been making with its theme. Using the same coloring and textured style, artists have created plenty of their own depictions of Starry Night over the years. But one series that seriously caught my attention is the one by artist Aja Kusick.

Brian Yorkey’s 13 Reasons Why begins in a high school hallway but doesn’t stay there. Its branches can be felt in every inch of the Northern California suburban town. Adapting Jay Asher’s bestselling Thirteen Reasons Why into a 13-episode series that Netflix dropped last weekend, the series explores the world surrounding Hannah, a teenager (Katherine Langford) who kills herself, and Clay (Dylan Minnette), a friend whose relationship to the deceased is among the show’s central ambiguities.
To some, framing what feels like a Twin Peaks-esque murder-mystery around an issue like suicide comes off as dangerous. Hank Stuever, of the Washington Post, called it “an especially cruel experience.” But suicide, the third leading cause of death for young people aged 15 to 24, has long been a fixture in teen literature, from Sharon Draper’s award-winner Tears of a Tiger...

“Starry Night” is one of if not the most famous painting that Van Gogh ever produced. However, I think even Van Gogh himself would be pretty impressed if he got to see an artist recreate his masterpiece on water. That’s right. An artist painted Starry Night on water. Turkish artist Garip Ay used a technique is known as Ebru or Paper marbling. It is a method of aqueous surface design which can produce patterns similar to smooth marble or other kinds of stone. The patterns are the result of color floated on either plain water or a viscous solution

Don Coscarelli’s Phantasm was released almost 37 years ago and, for almost as long, genre fans have suffered with the subpar treatment of this cult classic in terms of the film’s appearance and inadequate sound mix. Thankfully, that is no longer the case due to J. J. Abrams and the awesome folks at Bad Robot taking on the 4K restoration of Phantasm as a passion project, and the results are beyond stunning. The film has never looked or sounded better than it does in this iteration and, for those of us who have fondly followed the series, it’s a beautiful tribute to both the fans and the work of those involved with Phantasm, including the late, great Angus Scrimm.

Touched with Fire asks whether love between two thirty-something adults with bipolar disorder can be successful, loosely wondering about the intersection of sensuality, realism, and mental illness. It seems interested to extract a rubric explaining the connection between people with mental illness who are creatives. The film meanders through this exploration rather than makes up its mind as a creative drama or a serious character study where we could feel immediate pathos for the couple’s suffering and willfully involve ourselves in their situation (which could be an educational, engrossing filmic experience if well-presented). Contemporary films about mental illness such as Girl, Interrupted and A Beautiful Mind achieve this by stripping away characters’ “faces,” showing them as raw and realistic from the beginning. Disappointingly, this doesn’t happen in Touched with Fire. It takes time before New York City poets Carla (Katie Holmes) and Marco (Luke Kirby) approach identities more recognizably meaningful,...

Chicago – The status of individual mental acuity and control is like the fingerprint of the brain. There are disorders that have been diagnosed, which alters that fingerprint into different types of behavior. A new film, “Touched with Fire” – directed by Paul Dalio and featuring lead actor Luke Kirby – seeks to bridge an understanding of Bipolar Condition, the particular mental journey of highest (and ultra-creative) highs and mind numbing lows.
That was a one sentence attempt at trying to explain a complex state of being – an affected individual’s behavior is like a snowflake, different in all. In his new film “Touched With Fire,” writer/director Paul Dalio seeks to provide normalization to the Bipolar nature, in a fictional narrative. Actor Luke Kirby, a TV and film journeyman, has a career defining performance as Marco, a writer who goes from independence to institutions to his parent’s home, never seemingly under control.

Depicting mental illness in film is hard for two reasons. One is the fact that actors are playacting. This may not be the case across the board—performances could be inferred from personal experience—but I’d say a majority comes from a place of research and mimicry. The second reason deals with audiences having preconceived notions about mental illness that are generally misguided. It’s difficult to show someone an honest portrayal when they don’t believe it’s honest. Perhaps filmmakers shouldn’t care about this subsection of viewers because they’re walking that line for the afflicted so they can see they aren’t alone. Expand that circle to include individuals willing to learn and replace false truths and you find those who Paul Dalio hopes appreciate Touched With Fire.

Sid said that, like Isaac Newton, he stood on the shoulders of giants, his inspirations- Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton, Laurel and Hardy and W.C. Fields, who helped him develop his career and craft. You did things no one else could do and you inspired many others, including people in this room, to take the same artistic risks.
Sid Caesar’s funeral service was held on Sunday afternoon, February 16 at a private ceremony in Los Angeles. Among the family and friends paying tribute was Sid’s biographer and friend, Cinema Retro’s Eddy Friedfeld, who co-authored Sid’s creative biography, Caesar’s Hours, published by Public Affairs in 2003.
What follows is the eulogy Eddy delivered before Sid's family, friends and colleagues.

Arguably the great professional wrestler of the modern era, “The Excellence of Execution” Bret “The Hitman” Hart was a multi-time WWF/E and WCW World Champion as well as a Us, Intercontinental and Tag Team Champion in addition to being the 1993 King of the Ring. But perhaps his greatest achievement was his innate ability to suspend the disbelief of the crowd, making many truly think what they were witnessing was violently real.
While gold belts and shiny crowns may adorn Bret Hart’s walls, it was his ability to evoke sympathy from the crowd and viewers with the contortion of his body upon being struck, or the devastating yet consistent way Hart could take virtually any fall that built the foundation of The Hitman’s legacy as the greatest storyteller to ever grace the squared circle.
Sure, Bret Hart’s World Title Pay-Per-View bouts and big-time main events get a great deal of play,...

Poor Paris Jackson. She’s surrounded by chaos and upheaval at every turn in her family and now she may be questioning whether her adored father really was a pedophile. No wonder she’s deeply depressed, say experts.
Paris Jackson may have been left a fortune by her father, the King of Pop, Michael Jackson. But his $600 million estate has done nothing but bring personal heartbreak and emotional turmoil to the sensitive 15-year-old.
Paris Jackson’s Alleged Suicide Attempt — So Sad
If Paris did indeed attempt suicide and has also allegedly been cutting herself, it’s the most poignant cry for help that there could ever be.
Paris was devastated when her beloved father Michael died of an unintended overdose of anesthesia, when he was just 50.
He was the only parent she had ever known, since her biological mother Debbie Rowe, gave up all her parental rights to Paris and her older brother,...

Iconoclastic composer who crossed musical boundaries to create a distinctive, edgy sound
Steve Martland, who has died of a heart attack aged 53, was one of the most vibrant, unconventional and dynamic forces in British music. He first came to prominence in 1983 with Babi Yar, for large orchestra in three groups, championed by the Society for the Promotion of New Music (Spnm) and premiered separately on the same day by the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Nicholas Cleobury, and the St Louis Symphony Orchestra under Leonard Slatkin. It was later recorded to critical acclaim.
After that, though, he avoided the orchestra, preferring, from American Invention and Re-Mix (1985) onwards, to compose for smaller ensembles, not usually exceeding 13 players, such as those scored for his Steve Martland Band (formed 1992), which toured internationally like a rock group; string quartets, as with his Patrol (1992) or arrangement of Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D...

The chances of Korean sports comedy Mr. Go successfully winning over the hearts and minds of the family-friendly crowd rest squarely on the broad shoulders of the Baseball-playing Gorilla, a CG character created through director Kim Yong-hwa's own studio Dexter Digital. The attempt to fully realize a believable gorilla as the main star in a 3D digital film without the luxury of a Hollywood-size blockbuster budget has proven to be major challenge for a Korea production and was long considered too risky to undertake. Well, a second teaser has arrived that showcases more actual footage with the digital VFX and it looks like they hit it out of the park in achieving their technical goal and defying expectations. The cast include Xu Jiao (Starry Starry Night,...

The rain, and later cold, didn’t deter audiences as big numbers turned out for day two of Ebertfest. As evidenced by the pairing of “I Remember” with Days of Heaven, Roger put tremendous thought into his programming of the festival, something clearly on display with his choices for day two. The power and beauty of both family and art were thematic through-lines of the day, starting with the short, “To Music”.
Directed by Sophie Kohn and Feike Santbergen, “To Music” centers on Antwan, a lute player in the midst of depression who is eventually pulled out of it by hearing his pianist friend play Debussy’s “Claire de Lune” and picking up his lute again. There’s a clear sense of family in the film- Henriett, the female lead, can see that Antwan needs help. She tries to draw him out herself, she consults the local priest who tries as well,...

And he may very well establish a benchmark in Korean visual effects for a photorealistic CG character. Holy calamity. This is one seriously laborious edited exploration of the movies of 2012. No surprise it comes from our pal Sleepy Skunk (who we hear is pretty good at coming up with aliases and with making mash-ups). Not only did he condense great moments from 182 movies into under 7 minutes, he also managed to craft 3 meaningful movements – the first uncovering the looming theme of Dystopia while tying together common elements (like heavy rain or lights shutting off along a hallway); the second having fun with a common mash-up song and the many explosions of the year; and the third reveling in the connectivity between major Hollywood blockbusters and indie projects that are finding the kind of funding they need to play at a higher level. He was even nice enough to include a complete second-by-second guide to the movies in the video. My favorite moment comes at 6:00 when a fish bowl in Starry Starry Night tips over...

Many game enthusiasts have viewed a large number of varied discussions on whether or not games are art. Two very famous opinions on this debate are that of Roger Ebert and Kellee Santiago. Roger Ebert is a movie critic who has the strong view that video games could never be art. Kellee Santiago is a successful game creator who is well known as the co-founder of thatgamecompany (recently left) and is also known for giving a Ted talk in the defense of video games as art. While her lecture for Ted is relatively old news, the way she established her defense of video games as art has been prevalent in the discussion at large for quite some time.
This is a major concern for me, because I believe that Kellee Santiago failed horribly to defend the artistic potential of video games, especially to those well versed in art concepts such as Roger Ebert.
