Technical difficulties, but worth the purchase
Cubamania is a Cuban music festival that happened in 1999, and this DVD is a sort-of documentary on the artists. It also talks about cultural aspects, such as dancing and America's influence on Cuban salsa and mambo, but it mainly sticks to concert footage of the many artists that performed.
The DVD offers a great chance to see some real powerhouses of Cuban music, such as Bambeleo, Klimax, and Tumbao Habana. Unfortunately there are many technical snags that distract the viewer, such as poorly microphoned bass and unsynchronized sound. Occasionally the singers mouths are either ahead of or behind the music, and the bass is either too low or non-existent during easily 30% of the DVD. That's too much, in my opinion.
Still, Cubamania offers a great glimpse of modern Cuban music and the direction it's going in. What I enjoyed most was the overwhelming presence of young people at this festival - the people of Cuba love their country's music. In the US, young people generally can't stand our indigenous music - blues and jazz. After watching this documentary, I have much more respect for Cuba and it's preservation of it's indigenous culture.
