Herman Raucher, a best-selling author and the Academy Award nominated screenwriter of “Summer of ’42,” died Dec. 28 of natural causes at Stamford Hospital in Stamford, Conn. He was 95.
Raucher got his start in the industry working in live television. He wrote one hour dramas for anthology series including “Studio One,” “Good Year Playhouse” and “The Alcoa Hour.” In his screenwriting career, he wrote the scripts for two films starring Anthony Newley, “Sweet November” (1968) and “Can Heironymus Merkin Ever Forget Mercy Humppe and Find True Happiness?” (1969), which Newley also directed.
Raucher was inspired by Bobbie Gentry’s popular song “Ode to Billie Joe” to write the screenplay for Max Baer Jr.’s 1976 romance film of the same name starring Robby Benson and Glynnis O’Connor. Raucher also co-wrote the script for the 1977 film “The Other Side of Midnight.”

Herman Raucher, whose Oscar-nominated Summer of ’42 screenplay became one of Hollywood’s best-loved coming-of-age tales, has died of natural causes at Stamford Hospital in Stamford, Ct. He was 95.
His December 28 death was announced by daughter Jenny Raucher, who was by his side when he passed.
Subsequently adapted by Raucher into an international best-selling novel, 1971’s Summer of ’42 was nominated for four Academy Awards including Best Original Screenplay. It told the nostalgic and bittersweet story of teenager Hermie — played by Gary Grimes and based on Raucher himself — who, during a summertime vacation on Nantucket Island, becomes infatuated with a beautiful (and soon grieving) older woman (Jennifer O’Neill) whose husband has gone off to fight in World War II.
The film, directed by Robert Mulligan (To Kill a Mockingbird), was a critical success and a major hit for Warner Bros. Michel Legrand’s score won an Oscar and quickly became...

There are few film genres as manipulative as the “cancer romancer.” Unleashed on the world with 1970’s mega-smash Love Story, starring Ryan O’Neal and Ali MacGraw as a pair of star-crossed Harvardians whose nascent marriage is decimated by her terminal leukemia, this genre later flourished throughout the 2000s, with saccharine releases like Here on Earth, Sweet November, A Walk to Remember, P.S. If we were to isolate Life Sentence Season 1 Episode 1 from the entire series starring a charismatic Lucy Hale, the show would be a delightful triumph, breezy and fun and easy on the eyes with that CW sheen and glow of beautiful people on our screens.
Life Sentence is a charmer about one woman facing down the prospect of life after having come to terms with her death and the relationships built in just an hour feel lived in, well rounded and cared for by actors who already feel at home in the skin of the character.
But this isn't merely a one hour story, nor is it a mini-series.
Instead, it's only just the pilot of the latest CW series, and while that charm is apparent and striking, there's only so much it can do to power along a show whose shelf-life seems rather limited.

The appeal of Keanu Reeves – philosopher, lover, martial artist, musician, motorcycle enthusiast, movie star – is that he carries himself lightly, even in the movies that require him to turn from "cool breeze" (the Hawaiian translation of his first name, for those of you playing at home) to howling tempest. He's the type of guy who's had to deny being Buddhist, even though he's played the Buddha onscreen – because it's just widely assumed that he would swing that way religiously. ("I haven't take refuge in the dharma," he has assured us.

Hello! From Armageddon to Harry Potter, we salute the screen work of Mr Jason Isaacs...
This feature contains spoilers for Event Horizon and the Harry Potter films. This spoiler warning contains spoilers for the list.
Hello to Jason Isaacs! Through roles in an impressive array of movies, from indies to massive blockbusters on both sides of the pond, he's become one of our favourite character actors. We've found that no matter how the film turns out, you can guarantee that if he's in it, his performance is going to be one of the highlights.
Off-screen, Isaacs has a whole other profile of popularity. Out of several prominent celebrity fans of Mark Kermode and Simon Mayo's film review show on BBC Radio 5 Live, he's the patron saint of their “church of Wittertainment”, and “hello to Jason Isaacs” is the show's first, most popular catchphrase.

Hoping for a fresh start, a widower and his 17-year-old son move from a small northern California town to Los Angeles, where a new job, a new school, a wry old friend and two extraordinary women play a transformative role in the reshaping of their lives.
Fortitude is handling international rights to the film in Cannes.

Not exactly slowing his roll, Hong Sang-soo is already shooting the follow-up to last year’s Right Now, Wrong Then — one of the finest films we saw in 2015, and one likely to end up on a few best-of-2016 lists if it actually gets released — all the while reuniting with leads Jung Jae-young and Kim Min-hee. Information on his 18th feature remains essentially non-existent to outsiders, but such is my enthusiasm for his work, arguably the best streak in modern cinema, that even a brief notice seems worthwhile. It’s never nice to be disappointed by a reliable or well loved actor, but even Hollywood royalty have their bad days. Most viewers cringed at Leo DiCaprio’s uniquely ill conceived turn in notorious cult flop The Beach, while many fans will never forgive Charlize Theron for Sweet November. Luckily, this sort of regrettable surprise is rare. After all, a decent hit-maker in Hollywood can usually be depended on to make savvy career choices and to light up screens with their talent.
Sometimes an even rarer phenomenon occurs, though, in the form of a much more welcome surprise. A terrible actor, universally panned and relied on to produce material that’s trite at best and unwatchable at worst, will pleasantly shock audiences with a memorable and commendable performance.
At such a potentially career-defining moment, a flailing actor’s future rests tenuously on the brink of greatness. It can go either way.

Brother to Brother: O’Connor’s Rudimentary Look at Familial Ravages in WWII
His first film since that ill-advised 2001 remake of Sweet November, which sought to rekindle interest in possible on-screen chemistry between Charlize Theron and Keanu Reeves, Irish director Pat O’Connor revisits darker, historical themes with Private Peaceful, a WWII tale as told through the eyes of two brothers from Devon. It’s perhaps the most serious subject O’Connor has tackled since some of his more celebrated 80s titles, like the Ira romance thriller Cal (1984) which nabbed Helen Mirren one of her two Best Actress wins at Cannes. And yet, while it’s great to find O’Connor avoiding the type of soapy schmaltz he careened into during his last several features, his dip into the over explored WWII era never manages to register as emotionally, thematically, or narratively resonant.

Despite looking exactly the same as he did 20 years ago, Keanu Reeves celebrates his 50th birthday today (September 2).
Since making his debut in 1985, Reeves has climbed the ranks to become one of Hollywood's biggest stars, with movies that range from comedy to sci-fi, from romance to Shakespeare.
To mark Reeves's milestone, Digital Spy has selected just five of his finest performances from The Matrix to Bill & Ted.
1. Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure (1989)
'Wooaah'. After a handful of roles on TV and the big screen, Keanu got his mainstream break in this surprisingly awesome sci-fi comedy. Opposite Alex Winter as Bill, he was perfectly cast as the air-headed heavy metal-lover Ted. Its sequel Bogus Journey has also become a cult classic, and a third movie has long been mooted. It's a shame that he hasn't shown off his comedy chops on a more regular basis.

Just as Rufus (George Carlin) predicted, Bill and Ted have had a profound influence on our culture. Maybe not as the rockers who would inspire a utopian global society by the 27th century, but look at how many other dumb-duo movies there have been since the release 25 years ago this week (on February 17, 1989) of "Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure" -- there's "Dumb and Dumber," "Beavis and Butt-head Do America," "Dude, Where's My Car," "Romy and Michele's High School Reunion," "Dick," and all of Kevin Smith's "Jay and Silent Bob" offerings, for starters. Plus, "Bill & Ted" launched a franchise and made a leading man out of Keanu Reeves.
Still, as often as you've traveled back in time and revisited the "Excellent Adventure," there's probably still plenty you don't know about the movie, including where it was filmed (hint: Not in San Dimas, California), which historical figures almost found their way into the film,...

Michael Rosenbaum and the gang are taking a trip down memory lane in the all new side-splitting comedy Back In The Day and because I like you, you’re coming along for the ride. Recently, I sat down with Michael Rosenbaum, to talk about his experiences tackling his first feature as both the writer and director. Not only that, but he stars in the film as well. Michael is a buddy of mine, but we never talk shop so this was a real treat for me.
Back In The Day is the first feature film written and directed by Rosenbaum. He also stars in the film alongside Morena Baccarin Harland Williams, Sarah Colonna, Nick Swardson and Isaiah Mustafa. The film was acquired by Screen Media Films in early October, and will be making it’s way to theaters on January 17, 2014. Can’t wait that long? Well, you are in luck!

Liane Balaban made an impression as Dustin Hoffman’s sweetly sad, set-to-wed daughter in “Last Chance Harvey,” and will be recognizable to plenty of folks from her recurring role on the small screen’s “Supernatural.” In her latest film, however, Balaban gets to channel a wild, daffy femininity whose unhinged, slightly damaged siren call will strike a chord of familiarity in many a guy. In the vein of “Mad Love” and “Sweet November,” “Finding Joy” finds disillusioned author Kyle (Josh Cooke) returning home and having to cope with various indignities tossed his way by his estranged father (Barry Bostwick) and new stepmother (Lainie Kazan), when he meets Balaban’s spunky bohemian title character. Recently, the intrepid co-hosts of Sound on Sight radio asked me to help host a podcast devoted to Keanu Reeves. I had been hoping for a long time that they would have just such a podcast, and I wanted to take this opportunity to explain a little bit more about why I find Reeves to be such a fascinating figure, and why I have spent so many hours of my life thinking about him and enjoying his films. It’s already fairly common knowledge that Reeves is a pretty spectacular human being. In terms of recounting his personal awesomeness, this article (http://www.ranker.com/list/the-7-greatest-_true_-keanu-reeves-stories-ever-told/joanne) does a better job than I ever could. Give it a glance. But being an amazing human hasn’t necessarily won Keanu the accolades he deserves in the artistic world. And so, in terms of arguing for his value as a film star,...

Liam Aiken made his screen debut playing Parker Posey’s son at age seven in 1997′s “Henry Fool,” and then kept working as a kid, in movies like “Stepmom,” “Sweet November,” “Road to Perdition” and “Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events.” Transitioning to young adulthood, he’s dabbled in music, but kept working in movies, like Michael Winterbottom’s “The Killer Inside Me.” His latest film is writer-director Austin Chick’s “Girls Against Boys,” in which Aiken portrays Tyler, a guileless college student whose burgeoning relationship with the troubled Shae (Danielle Panabaker) upsets the balance of the latter’s relationship with the even more troubled Lu (Nicole Laliberte). For ShockYa, Brent Simon recently had a chance to speak to Aiken one-on-one, [ Read More ]

A film critic by the name of Nathan Rabin coined the phrase "Manic Pixie Dream Girl" as a way to describe Kirsten Dunst’s role in Cameron Crowe's Elizabethtown. He described this Manic Pixie Dream Girl as being "that bubbly, shallow cinematic creature that exists solely in the fevered imaginations of sensitive writer-directors to teach broodingly soulful young men to embrace life and its infinite mysteries and adventures." Here's a great video compilation that pays tribute to 75 years of these type of female characters. The movie comes from Flavorwire, and it turned out great!

Exclusive: This is a cautionary tale for every Hollywood manager who’s spending a lot of time producing. Such is the case with Erwin Stoff. The 3 Arts Entertainment president has repped Keanu Reeves for something like 32 years (ever since the actor was 16 years old). The Stoff-Reeves relationship has long been considered one of Hollywood’s most enduring. Until recently. I’ve learned it’s now very much on the rocks. ”Keanu Reeves very quietly left 3 Arts. Then he was recently convinced to stay at 3 Arts but with different reps,” says one of my sources. “Handling him now are Tom Lasally, Nick Frenkel, and David Miner. ” It’s the end of the world as we know it”…shortly. Or maybe it’s ” Apocalypse Very Soon “. I’m trying to sum up the premise of Seeking A Friend For The End Of The World, but then the actual title works pretty well. Many mega-budget blockbusters work the CGI crews overtime to show the end of days in flicks like 2012 and Independence Day, but just last year Melancholia took a quieter, more personal look at the big finale. Now that film is a real downer ( but very well done ) while Seeking has many of the same elements but with a big dollup of humor. It’s also a love story about two people who find each other just as time ran out.

I kept fearing "50/50" would take a left turn onto Sappy Boulevard, plod past Preachy Junction and come to a rest in a town populated by "Dying Young," "Autumn in New York" and "Sweet November," where everyone learns pat lessons and becomes better people (except for those who die; those unfortunate folks just help us learn something about ourselves before they pass into the Great Cheesy Beyond).
"50/50" is a movie about cancer, after all, about a young man with the disease. At a certain point star Seth Rogen would have to cease being Seth Rogen, and the whole film would become some Ya version of "Beaches," right?
Wrong, wrong, wrong. Based on writer Will Reiser's own experiences and starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt as a young radio producer suffering from a rare form of cancer, "50/50" pulls off the magic trick of staying consistently funny, sweet, affecting and real — and never, ever cheesy.

Michael Morpurgo, despite being an acclaimed author hasn’t found many of his novels being requested to receive the transition from book to movie. However, with Steven Spielberg having taken on the adaptation of his much celebrated novel War Horse, set to release this Christmas, it seems developers are starting to take a more in depth look at his portfolio.
The Playlist reports that his 2003 book Private Peaceful, is going to be transferred to the big screen and it seems almost everyone involved aren’t particularly well known, (excluding the author himself – no news on whether he will decide to play a part in the movie’s production himself) although lots of the names involved may ring a bell for you.
Helmed by Pat O’Connor (Sweet November, Circle of Friends) and written by Simon Reade, it shall feature Jack O’Connell, George Mackay and Alexandra Roach in the starring roles.

Elliott Kastner, the American producer of Hollywood films including 1968's "Where Eagles Dare" starring Richard Burton and 1977's "A Little Night Music" starring Elizabeth Taylor, died June 20 in London of cancer. He was 80.
The producer based his work at London's Pinewood Studios for years. Some of his best-known movies include three big-screen adaptations of Raymond Chandler works: "The Long Goodbye" (1973), "Farewell, My Lovely" (1975) and "The Big Sleep" (1978).
Kastner began his professional career as a literary agent and also served for a couple years in the early 1960s as a vp production at Universal Pictures.
He left the studio to become an independent producer, and for his second film, Kastner hired up-and-coming novelist William Goldman to write his first solo screenplay. "Harper" (1966), starred Paul Newman in one of his star-making roles, and Goldman went on to win two Oscars for screenwriting.

As Irish actor Stuart Townsend nurses a broken hear rumors are circling that his former partner Charlize Theron and old buddy Keanu Reeves have become a couple. Reeves, who is known in the industry as a genuinely caring guy, is said to be helping the actress Sandra Bullock (who starred alongside him in 'Speed 2') as best he can as she works her way through her divorce. Earlier this month it was revealed that Keanu and Charlize - the former 'Sweet November' co-stars - had been dining at a Beverly Hills restaurant when they were seen sharing what appeared to be an intimate moment. Theron and Reeves have shared the big screen as husband and wife and perhaps they're auditioning for reality now too. Reeves certainly stays close to the actors he's works alongside and it's not difficult to imagine that that his interest could turn romantic!

She was previously set to play a teen lesbian werewolf in Jack and Diane, but Ellen Page is apparently now looking at more grown-up projects. Like playing an adult lesbian auto mechanic in Freeheld. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the tearjerker is being adapted from Cynthia Wade's Oscar-winning short documentary of the same title by Oscar-nominated screenwriter Ron Nyswaner (Philadelphia). Page has been cast as Stacie Andree (pictured, right), the girlfriend of dying New Jersey police officer Laurel Hester. In addition to fighting cancer, Hester fought the county to get her pension benefits passed on to Stacie. Such privileges were of course reserved solely for (heterosexual) married couples, not (gay) domestic partners. The remake will be produced by acclaimed documentarian James D. Stern (Every Little Step) along with Erin Brockovich's Michael Shamberg and Stacey Sher.

Charlize Theron has found love with Keanu Reeves after ending her nine-year romance with Irish actor Stuart Townsend, according to U.S. tabloid reports. The actress, who played Reeves' wife in "The Devil's Advocate" and his dying lover in Sweet November, split from Townsend in January this year, and reports suggest she has turned to Reeves to help her move on.
The former friends were photographed in an intimate embrace after a dinner date in Beverly Hills earlier this month, and now a source tells the National Enquirer the couple is a new Hollywood item. The insider tells the publication, "Keanu kept Charlize's spirits high with his goofy sense of humor and low-key, easy-to-love manner. He makes her laugh, which was just what the doctor ordered for her broken heart. As she suffered through the break-up with Stuart, Keanu stepped in."

Woo, woo, woo! TMZ has footage of Charlize Theron making out with Keanu Reeves on the street after a delicious dinner together! Is it possible that the former co-stars of 1997’s Devil’s Advocate and 2001’s Sweet November are enjoying a belated romance? Has he been politely waiting for relationships with Stephan Jenkins and Stuart Townsend to end so he could swoop down and declare his eternal devotion? Was his shirt off when he did it? “More evidence—when they hugged each other goodbye, Charlize’s hands are clearly Under Keanu’S Jacket!” Omg! That’s totally the universal sign of a sexual relationship! What an update!
Granted, these two have acted intimately for years at social events and they clearly were aware of the cameras during their clinch. If they were secretly banging, they probably wouldn’t be hugging at all. But if Charlize and Keanu want to come...

A few days ago, my colleague here at Atomic Popcorn gave his top 15 movie romances/romantic movies. Well, being a girl, I’m contractually obliged to enjoy romantic movies. For that reason, I’ve decided to give my own female take as to the top 15 movie romances.
Here to wrap up this Valentine’s Day week, I present to you my… Top 15 Favorite Movie Romances/Movie Couples!
*Warning: Spoilers May Be Present*
First, some honorable mentions:
- Fight Club: Tyler Durden/Narrator & Marla
The neurotic Marla and the split personalities of Tyler Durden and our crazy narrator are weirdly perfect for each other, and you have to give kudos to a woman who is willing to stand by her (men?) as each is more and more consumed by his other side. Plus, the final scene where the two hold each other’s hands as they watch a building go down is eccentrically sweet.
