A classic comedy with a pinch of surrealism
crubal199710 May 2000
This is a refreshing exercise of classic screwball comedy that, although somewhat flawed by some rhythm issues, is overall very entertaining. The first time director, Daniel F. Amselem, takes an irreverent look at Franco and post-Civil War Spain, making fun of everything and everybody, including himself. This approach to that period will have no doubt many critics still today, but I believe it is a good one, even a necessary one, as we look back on our recent history with more distance. Amselem also does a nice job at getting surprisingly good performances from most of his actors, TV celebrities and stand-in comedians for the most part doing their first time stunt in the movie world. Overall, a comedy to be recommended, and to be watched without prejudice of any kind.
