The audience segments were filmed in a small TV studio in New York City just down the street from where Barbra Streisand was performing in "Funny Girl". The audience consisted of about 200 members of Streisand's fan club.
In her introduction for the 1987 home video release, Barbra Streisand reports that the entire cast of "Funny Girl" gathered "at 9:00 during intermission" to watch the TV special on her dressing room television set, at which point the engineer at CBS forgot to start the tape rolling, which led to dead air.
