The Cannes Film Festival has unveiled new additions to the Official Selection for its upcoming 77th edition from May 14 to May 25.
Three new films have been added to the Competition lineup: Oscar-winning director Michel Hazanavicius’ animated feature The Most Precious of Cargoes, Iranian director Mohammad Rasoulof’s Seed of the Sacred Fig and Emanuel Parvu’s Three Miles to the End of the World.
The Artist skyrocketed Hazanavicius to international fame in 2011 as the film won best picture at the Academy Awards, and received 10 Oscar nominations and five wins. Hazanavicius for his latest film adapted the Second World War novel of the same title by Jean-Claude Grumberg that is set against the events of the Holocaust and told with magical realism.

One of Hollywood's most frustrating recent news stories is that Francis Ford Coppola is having trouble finding distribution for his self-funded passion project, "Megalopolis" (via The Hollywood Reporter). In a just world, making "The Godfather" would grant Coppola a lifetime blank check, but that has never been the world we've lived in.
What you may not be aware of is one of Coppola's influences for his magnum opus. Like his friend "Star Wars" director George Lucas, Coppola looked to Japanese filmmaker Akira Kurosawa. While Lucas took after Kurosawa's Jidaigeki (historical) films, Coppola looked to one of the director's contemporary-set films: "The Bad Sleep Well."
Released in 1960 and starring his go-to leading man Toshiro Mifune, the movie is one of Kurosawa's (comparatively) more obscure ones. It was especially overshadowed by "High and Low," the masterful kidnapping thriller that Kurosawa and Mifune released in 1963. Both movies are set in the world of...

Robert MacNeil, the trusted son of a Canadian naval officer who spent two decades alongside Jim Lehrer delivering the nightly news to PBS viewers, died Friday, PBS announced. He was 93.
MacNeil died of natural causes at New York-Presbyterian Hospital, his daughter, Alison MacNeil, told the Associated Press.
MacNeil and Lehrer first teamed to cover the Senate Watergate hearings in 1973, and their live coverage earned them an Emmy. In 1975, they launched a half-hour program that would become The MacNeil/Lehrer Report; it covered a single story in depth and collected more than 30 awards, including a Peabody, a DuPont and several Emmys.
The program in 1983 became The MacNeil/Lehrer NewsHour, the nation’s first 60-minute evening news program. Rather than concentrate on one topic, it provided comprehensive coverage and analysis of the day’s important stories.

Jeremy Irons and double-Palme d’Or winner Bille August are gearing up for their highly-anticipated Count of Monte Cristo series but when offered the chance to work on the project, they had certain red lines.
“I wouldn’t have taken it if it was a movie, it had to be TV,” Danish director August told Deadline at Series Mania. “The story is so rich and deserves TV. For this one it was obvious.”
Oscar-winner Irons said TV series can do “these great novels justice” in a way that some movies can’t, referencing his breakout work on 1981’s Brideshead Revisited, which was across 13 episodes. Both stars have skewed towards movies during their decorated careers and Count Of Monte Cristo has never been made for TV. A 2002 movie version saw Richard Harris play Irons’ role.

French director Yann Gozlan is set to reunite with Pierre Niney, the French star of his two most successful movies “Un homme idéal” and “Black Box,” for his next film, “Gourou.”
“Gourou” is being co-produced by Wassim Beji at Wy Productions, the Paris-based company behind “Black Box and “Un Homme Ideal,” and Niney’s banner Ninety Films.
While the plot is currently under wraps, the project is being teased as a deep dive into the world of coaching and follows the rise of a personal development guru who turns out to be toxic. The script is by Jean-Baptiste Delafon, whose credits include “Of Money and Blood” which played at Venice, and Gozlan.
One of France’s most bankable and busiest French actors, Niney won a Cesar Award for his performance as French fashion legend Yves Saint Laurent in Jalil Lespert’s biopic in 2015, and went on to work with Anne Fontaine...

"Monkey Man" burns with the passion and nerve of a filmmaker who thinks he's not going to direct another film ever again. Dev Patel, always a dynamic actor, doesn't break out the fireworks for his directorial debut as much as he unleashes an entire explosive arsenal. There's more going on -- visually, emotionally, thematically -- in single moments of this ultra-violent action movie than you find in most films of the genre. To call it ambitious would be an understatement. Here's a movie that wants to say every single thing Patel wants to communicate as a filmmaker, and it's all got to fit into a two-hour running time. Forget oxygen. Forget subtlety. No one's got time for that when this is your first (and maybe last) time at bat.
Can one blame Patel for trying to do literally everything he possibly can with his debut feature behind the camera? Not...

Katherine Kubler’s harrowing three-part documentary tells a suffocating survivor story that morphs into a terrifying takedown on America’s corrupt behavior modification boarding school business.
“They tried to murder children’s souls here.”
Alexandre Dumas’ The Count of Monte Cristo plays a recurring role as a beacon of escapism in The Program, Netflix’s three-part true-crime documentary, as imprisoned teens struggle to experience any modicum of individuality in a prison-like rehab center. “All human wisdom is contained in these two words – Wait and Hope,” is a moving quote from Dumas’ novel and it’s hard to not transpose this intense message onto the tortured victims of Ivy Ridge Academy as they fight for survival.
The Program unpacks the global epidemic of behavior modification programs that masquerade as boarding schools where parents willingly send their children to these hard-knock rehab centers. This in itself is a refreshing change of pace...

Henry Cavill was well on his way to enlisting in the military and joining the Royal Marines like a couple of his older brothers if acting had not snatched him up when he was 17. He stepped into Hollywood with a role in the film Laguna, released in 2001. Bille August, the two-time Palme d’Or-winning director, found his creative match with the former Queen of Denmark, Margrethe II, who reinvented herself as a detail-oriented costume designer on his hit Netflix film “Ehrengard: The Art of Seduction.”
The film, which took a decade to bring to life, is nominated for three Robert Awards, the Danish equivalent to the Oscars. A playful royal scandal set in the early 19th century, “Ehrengard: The Art of Seduction” was penned by Anders August and based on a 1963 novella by Karen Blixen, the Danish baroness who was played by Meryl Streep in “Out of Africa.” The film revolves around Cazotte, a young portrait painter who considers himself an expert on love matters and is challenged by the Grand Duchess to seduce a young woman, as well as help her secure an heir.

Now that’s finally come to pass, with Disney+ Hotstar in December ordering a remake, Karmma Calling, from R.A.T. Studios. “The Count of Monte Cristo” marks Irons’ third collaboration with August, who directed him in “Night Train to Lisbon” and “The House of Spirits.” A revered Danish filmmaker, August previously won...

Europe’s major players in TV and film attending Mipcom Cannes sensed a wave of opportunity coming at them from across the Atlantic, as Hollywood muddles through a period of strategic uncertainty and steep losses from the transition to streaming platforms.
The extended labor strife in the U.S. this year, with the Writers Guild of America and SAG-AFTRA waging historic and concurrent strikes, has Euro producers touting the appeal of lensing on the continent with a strong pool of skilled talent accustomed to working at much lower price points.
Also looming over Mipcom was the intense security protocol deployed around the Palais and headlines of bomb scares in France. The country has been on high alert in the wake of Hamas’ attack on Israel on Oct. 7 and the murder of a high school teacher a few days later. Despite the tense geo-political backdrop, the overall mood of marketgoers seemed livelier than last year,...

Rome’s Mia Market, dedicated to international TV series, animation, feature films, documentaries and more, kicked off Monday in the Eternal City’s 17th century Palazzo Barberini. There were some 2,300 registered industry execs on day one – roughly 300 of which are buyers – more than 120 selected projects on display, and plenty of panels.
At a press conference, Mia director Gaia Tridente noted that, sadly, a group of industry execs who were expected to arrive from Israel, including “Waltz With Bashir” director Ari Folman, are being forced to stay in the country by the war that has broken out with Palestinian militant group Hamas. “Our thoughts go out to them and we hope to be able to welcome them in Rome in a context of peace and security for all,” Tridente said.

Henry Cavill is in a weird place in his career. The "Man of Steel" star didn't have the best 2022 after officially announcing his return as Superman then officially announcing that he would, in fact, not return as Superman. It was all part of Cavill and Dwayne Johnson's bizarre attempts to stay in the DC Universe prior to James Gunn's new slate of DC films ushering in a new era for the beleaguered brand. At the time, Cavill made the dubious claim that he was told by the studio to make his return announcement before it all went wrong.
In the midst of all this, the actor also announced he would be leaving the role of Geralt of Rivia in Netflix's "The Witcher" after its third season — a show in which he'd lobbied hard to star. Then came the announcement Cavill would be producing and starring in a new Warhammer show for Amazon,...

Review: Sound of Freedom is definitely one of the most notable movies of the summer season. Having originally been produced by 20th Century Fox before Disney acquired the company, the movie sat on the shelf for five years. Boasting a modest budget and coming from a pretty tiny studio, the grassroots campaign used to market the film has resulted in some pretty staggering box office results, with it having already grossed $40 million. It will likely be the highest-grossing independent film of the year. However, it’s also been a lightning rod for controversy, with many slamming it as a “Quanon film.

On March 6, History of the World, Part II will finally arrive more than 40 years after Mel Brooks’ classic comedy History of the World, Part I. first premiered. Described as a four-night comedy event, History of the World, Part II will release two episodes a day through March 9. Brooks returns to write and executive produce this series and will star alongside Nick Kroll, Wanda Sykes, and Ike Barinholtz. Guest stars include…everyone. Basically just everyone.

It’s ironic but unavoidable that the greatest annual celebration of film should be a television special — but that’s just how it is. March often means Oscar season, a time for cinephiles to boot up that small screen you use for movies and use it to see if they win any awards during a telecast.
If you don’t have TV service anymore, Hulu has you covered with a pre-Oscars telecast as well as two red carpet specials before and after the main event. Though the ceremony itself won’t be livestreamed on Hulu, it will be added the next morning, like regular ABC programming. Awards viewership has been in general decline over the past several years, but next-day streaming gives curious viewers a chance to join the conversation and boost those Oscar ratings after the live show. Robert Donat snagged an Oscar for this sentimental crowdpleaser, a Best Picture nominee in Hollywood’s ‘Golden Year’ of 1939. The genteel chemistry between Donat’s shy schoolteacher and the charming personality Greer Garson broke hearts, and made Ms. Garson one of MGM’s top names for the next decade. It’s one of the studio’s English productions, filmed in the shadow of the coming war. A glowing new digital restoration redeems 70 years of not-so-good TV prints.

After partnering on the anticipated saga “The Three Musketeers,” Pathé and Chapter 2 are re-teaming on “The Count of Monte Cristo,” another classic by Alexandre Dumas.
Directed by Matthieu Delaporte and Alexandre de La Patellière, the sprawling adventure movie will star Pierre Niney as Monte Cristo, who is considered an iconic figure of French literature.
Dimitri Rassam, president of Chapter 2, a Mediawan company, and Pathé are producing the movie which will start shooting on location in France in July.
Matthieu Delaporte and Alexandre de la Patellière are prolific screenwriters whose recent credits include the two-part epic “The Three Musketeers.” They have directed a raft of popular films, including “What’s in the Name?”
“‘The Count of Monte Cristo’ is one of the greatest stories ever told. A veritable myth mixing several cinematic genres – adventure and thriller is layered on top of an immensely powerful love story,” said Delaporte and de la Patelliere.

When the Waves Are Gone (2022).Over the span of almost two decades, Lav Diaz has established himself not only as one of the most prolific filmmakers working in the realm of arthouse cinema—being perhaps the most acclaimed adherent of the slow expression—but also as a consistent observer of the political landscape of the Philippines. His method of work abounds in slowness, as well as the poetics of excess: long formats, politically-driven allegories, maximized genre capacity. The excessiveness appears in his preference for the independence of the film economy, too. Diaz not only directs and writes his films but oftentimes also designs, shoots and edits them, maintaining control over the final outcome—a whole universe of dark morality tales that encapsulate a gloomy here-and-now and down-to-earth scrutiny of the Philippine milieu. This rigidity in approach to medium translates to the choice of aesthetics. Diaz has embraced his favorite canvas: a grainy,...

My production company, Enhanced Hammer, is a nod to a term in the art world that connotates a work of art that is of such high quality that that it can command a premium situation. Stoked by raves and strong receptions to their world-premiering Toronto festival films, “Brother” producers Damon D’Oliveira and Clement Virgo, “Black Ice” producer Vinay Virmani, and “Alice, Darling” producer Noah Segal are warming up a new basketball-themed crime series, “The Count,” for this fall’s marketplace, Variety has learned.
A modern spin on French author Alexandre Dumas’ classic 19th-century novel of wrongful imprisonment “The Count of Monte Cristo,” the TV drama will bounce between Toronto’s basketball milieu and Haiti’s cultural mélange as it follows the transformation of a Haitian basketball player facing a life sentence for murder into to justice-seeking saboteur.
D’Oliveira and Virgo under their Conquering Lion Pictures company, The Good Karma Company’s chief content officer Virmani, and Elevation Pictures co-president Segal have signed on as executive producers on the series.

When Fair is Foul: Diaz Attempts Neo-Noir in Interminable Derivatives
In the twenty plus features Filipino auteur Lav Diaz has premiered over the past two decades, his latest, When the Waves Are Gone, might be his most economically auspicious venture as it’s his first international co-production. With a running time just passing the three hour mark, it’s also one of his least punitively designed films as far as running times go (though a core segment of his ardent followers seem to masochistically enjoy his punishing exercises in concentration).
A loose adaptation of The Count of Monte Cristo transposed upon the vicious ‘war on drugs’ campaign waged by President Rodrigo Duterte in 2016, Diaz once again dabbles in genre cinema spliced with his own particular brand of glacial scrutinizing.…...

Welcome to The B-Side, from The Film Stage. Here we talk about movie stars! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones that they made in between. And sometimes we’re lucky enough to talk to them directly!
Today is one of those glorious days. Conor and I are joined by Guy Pearce, the incomparable actor who’s got a new film coming out in theaters – Memory (April 29th!) – and plenty of accomplished past work to dig into as well.
We focus on The Count of Monte Cristo, The Hard Word, and Lockout (a.k.a. Space Jail). Plenty more is touched on in our 25 minutes of Guy Talk. Pearce explains his disappointment in Gillian Armstrong’s Death Defying Acts getting buried by Harvey Weinstein fifteen years ago, gets honest about certain movies he deems his “divorce films,” and highlights other B-Sides he’d...
