Fantastic Concert Video! Stevie At His Peak!
GrantCAGE17 May 2001
This is a great concert video from the 'Great White Hope Of The Blues' Stevie Ray Vaughan. The video footage is basically 2 concerts that Stevie did for 'Austin City Limits' programme in Texas. The first performance of 3 songs from the 1983 show are excellent! It starts brilliantly with 'Pride And Joy'. Stevie then playes the flabbergasting 'Texas Flood' with amazing showmanship (playing his Strat behind his back!!!) Then an equally superb performance of Hendrix's 'Voodoo Chile (Slight Return). The next performance on the same show from 1989 shows Stevie cleaned up and sober playing some amazing material from the then new release of 'In Step'. The songs in the order from the '89 concert are 'The House Is Rockin'', 'Tightrope', 'Leave My little Girl Alone', 'Cold Shot', 'Crossfire' and the 'Riviera Paradise' instrumental. It's superb! At the end of the concerts is a bonus video of 'Little Wing' - the Jimi Hendrix tune that Stevie covered which was previously unreleased and the video is fantastic as it shows a whole lot of rare SRV footage and countless blues greats including BB King, T-Bone Walker, Albert Collins, Hendrix, Big Bill Broonzy, Leadbelly and loads more! It's a fantastic video and I gave it a 9/10. Fantastic!

Only SRV Could Do Hendrix Justice
ccthemovieman-118 February 2007
Included on this DVD is footage from two concerts, two appearances on television's "Austin City Limits." I thought this was easily the best of the three Stevie Ray concert tapes (DVDs) I've seen. All of them are good, however.

Most of this is from the 1989 concert but I enjoyed the three songs from the '83 concert the most. They seemed to be the most intense and the most impressive. The latter adjective mainly describes his work on "Voodoo Chile." To my knowledge, Vaughan is the only guitarist to successfully imitate the late-and-great Jimi Hendrix. (Although SRV's vocals aren't as good.)

After 40-some minutes of rocking blues and rock, there is a change-of-pace and beautifully done jazz instrumental called "Riviera Paradise." Featured on that piece is keyboard player, "Reese Wynans," who does an outstanding job.

This is a feel-good, great music and most of it would make for a good aerobic-workout music, too.

Just a good DVD to own if you're into SRV/blues.

I'm not particularly into concert DVDs, but this one really is a classic. SRV colorfully demonstrates his genius by putting on a really soulful performance in his home state. Stevie Ray's music is rare in that it's nearly as fun to watch as it is to listen to. Watching him just get possessed and become one with the guitar is really something.

I remember a lot of people in college (in Austin) would always throw on this DVD at parties and get-togethers, just to have on in the background if nothing else.

Voodoo Chile and Texas Flood are masterfully done.

Highly recommended. This guitar prodigy was taken from us way too early...you won't regret owning this little piece of Stevie Ray.

A Must Have for the SRV Fan

This excellent video is done in two parts. The first three songs are from the 1983 performance on Austin City Limits and they are excellent. Stevie Ray rocks all out on "Pride and Joy", "Texas Flood", and the Jimi Hendrix cover of "Voodoo Chile (Slight Return)" (only SRV could do the latter song justice).

The songs from the 1989 show are, "The House Is Rockin", "Tightrope", "Leave My Little Girl Alone", "Cold Shot", "Crossfire", and "Riviera Paradise". "Leave My Little Girl Alone" is the blues at its very best. Stevie Ray plays the guitar with such passion. "Riviera Paradise" is a great jazz flavored instrumental. I think it's awesome. The keyboard part reminds me of something that Lyle Mays with the Pat Metheny Group would play. Really nice.

Also included at the end of the video disc is a montage video of 'Little Wing', this is the Jimi Hendrix song that SRV covered which was previously unreleased. The video is awesome as it shows rare footage with SRV and several blues greats including BB King, T-Bone Walker, Albert Collins, Hendrix, Big Bill Broonzy, Leadbelly, Eric Clapton, and more.

All in all, this is an excellent collection of SRV songs. A must have for the SRV fan.
