DC and Marvel have given the world some of the greatest characters in pop culture: Spider-Man, Batman, Superman, and D-Man. So if the two companies were to put their heads together and come up with a character that they could share, that character would be the greatest comic creation of all time, right?
Well, if that’s what you think, then let me introduce you to Axel Asher, aka Access. And let me tell you right from the beginning, that he is not the greatest comic creation of all time.
A History of Crossovers
Before going too far into the history of the greatest comic find of his generation, we have to put the distinction between the big two into their proper context. Long before Snyder bros blasted the MCU for making unserious movies about people in colorful tights, long before Marvel Zombies knocked DC for dealing in boring gods,...

Did you ever have an episode of TV that just rubbed you the wrong way?
That's how I felt about Chicago Fire Season 12 Episode 5 when the hour began. It was hard to shake the agitation.
It felt like that was the point of it, too. We could all use a massaging easy chair.
What makes a show like Chicago Fire tick is that if you have that attitude going in, you will probably come away feeling entirely different.
That goes for viewers and anyone who comes in contact with Firehouse 51.
The emergency at the high school with a young basketball player whose heart stopped started the whole shebang. It seemed like it would be just like any other case, except when Sylvie and Violet set to do what they've done many times before, their equipment failed.
It's hard to imagine what it must feel like to do everything right and...

At the start of Cold Blows the Wind, Dean and Tasha look in the trunk of their car and are surprised to find a badly injured man. To avoid that he takes the only logical course of action and stabs the man to death. Tasha reluctantly helps him bury the body.

Even the most fervent follower of RuPaul's Drag Race can admit that it's an exhausting time to be a fan. What began as a low-budget quasi-parody of America's Next Top Model has blossomed into a multimedia drag empire, winning multiple Emmys, and changing the face(-face-face) of drag in the mainstream. But with the flagship series, All Stars spin-offs, international versions, Global All Stars, Versus-the-World seasons — and that's just the competition shows — it has become a full-time gig to keep up with even a fraction of these shows.

The Human Highlight Film is getting the documentary treatment.
NBA legend Dominique Wilkins has committed to a documentary project about his life and career, partnering with the production studio Versus on the film.
“I think the goal is to go from no light to highlight, you know, highlight being my nickname,” Wilkins tells The Hollywood Reporter in an interview (his nickname, “The Human Highlight Film,” was due to his acrobatic slam dunks). “And what that means is that when all seemed to fail, and there was no light at the end of the tunnel, to see my my fight and my determination to get to what I call my highlight moment in life.”

David Leitch and Kelly McCormick’s production and action design company 87North has teamed with Universal Pictures Content Group to make a doc series about Hollywood stunt performers.
Action will follow 87North’s stunt teams at work and tell stories of the performers’ everyday lives and their loves of action sports, martial arts, motocross and other high-octane activities. The six-part show will highlight the highs and lows of working in often-dangerous environments while balancing family life.
it will also feature exclusive behind-the-scenes access to Hollywood movie sets including the upcoming Ryan Gosling starrer The Fall Guy, which Leitch is directing and McCormick producing. Leitch and McCormick are known for features such as Bullet Train.
The series is currently in post-production. Leitch and McCormick are executive producers, working with producers Josh Oreck and Chelsea Allen and director Bridger Nielson. NBCUniversal Global Distribution is handling international sales.
87North, which has its own action design and stunt facility, has worked on action flicks such as Bullet Train, Fast & Furious Present: Hobbs & Shaw, Deadpool 2, Atomic Blonde, Nobody, Violent Night and John Wick, and has a first-look deal with Universal, through which it recently wrapped production on The Fall Guy.
“My first loves are action films, and the backbone of this genre are the stunt performers who bring their kinetic magic to the screen,” said Leitch, who besides producing and directing was Bradd Pitt’s stunt double. “Kelly and I are excited to finally shine the spotlight on these unsung, unseen heroes of Hollywood and celebrate the stunt community with Acton.”
Helen Parker, EVP of Universal Pictures Content Group, said: “There is absolutely no one better to work with when it comes to stunts and action movies, so we are thrilled that David and Kelly have been willing to secure such unprecedented access into the lives of their incredible teams who are unequivocally the best in the business. This documentary series gives a fascinating insight into the people behind the action; we get to meet some amazing characters and learn about what brought them to Hollywood and what they had to sacrifice in order to achieve success.”
Universal and 87North have several projects in development together, including Kung Fu and Versus. 87North is also working on sequels to Nobody and Violent Night, along with features for Prime Video and Ambling and TV shows.
Universal Pictures Content Group is part of Universal Filmed Entertainment Group and its slate currently includes Sky Sports doc Deadline Day: Football’s Transfer Window, Channel 4 festive season animation Mog’s Christmas and HBO music doc Tina.

Ryuhei Kitamura has had a rather interesting career. Starting with some of the cult titles of the 00s, including “Versus”, “Azumi” and “LoveDeath”, he then shot a Godzilla and a “Lupin The Third” film, then he moved to Hollywood to shoot films with Ruby Rose and Jean Reno among others, and now he is back with “Three Sisters of Tenmasou”, a manga adaptation that shows his most sensitive side as of now.
Three Sisters of Tenmasou is screening at Japan Cuts
The particular manga is “Tenmasou no Sanshimai: Sky High” by Tsutomu Takahashi (published from 2013 to 2014 by Young Jump Comics) and revolves around the said inn, a quaint out-of-time place in the small port town of Mitsuse. The establishment functions as a stopping point for people on the verge of death to decide if they want to return to the world of the living, where they are in a coma from an accident or illness,...

Yudai Yamaguchi and Tak Sakaguchi have repeatedly collaborated through the years in various capacities, with their common efforts resulting in a number of cult movies, including “Versus”, “Battle Baseball”, “Yakuza Weapon” etc. Now they are once more coming together in a different action film that boasts a meta approach, while including “Hydra”'s Kensuke Sonomura in the role of the action director.
“One Percenter” is screening at Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival
Action film actor Toshiro Takuma has only one goal on his mind, the perfection of action film acting, essentially to achieve utter realism and not have screen battles that are essentially dancing. However, in an industry addicted to wires, CGI and quick editing to simulate speed, he expectedly finds himself ostracized. Eventually, with the help of his dedicated apprentice Akira, he decides to make a movie as he dreamt and for that purpose, they move into an uninhabited island to shoot unbothered.

When the creative minds of Tanya Babic and Jason Sukadana Aka Versus, whose directorial work we’ve frequently celebrated here on Dn, decided to launch Subversus – a new creative studio dedicated to creating positive cultural subversions – the output was bound to be impressive. Working in collaboration with the Powerhouse Museum in Sydney, Versus present Latitudes. Conceived with the objective of celebrating the diversity and often overlooked talents of Western Sydney which has historically been underrepresented both culturally and artistically, while also giving voice to the flourishing creative scene traversing movement, music and art. Through 18 months of work, 9 artists, 100 collaborators and 15 Western Sydney locations the duo surmounted several challenges along the way to bring to life a trio of films. Whilst these films each exhibit their own unique originally crafted voice, approach and theme, there is a fluid cohesion across the films which is testament to the already well-established voices of Babic and Sukadana.

Minecraft Legends (the Rts spin-off of the Minecraft franchise) just arrived for all major consoles and PC. While the game doesn’t quite reach the heights of Minecraft Dungeons, it’s a fun little take on the absurdly popular franchise. Of course, Minecraft Legends is a lot more fun if you play it with friends via one of the game’s multiplayer modes.
While Minecraft Legends features fairly extensive multiplayer options, it’s not easy to tell from the outset how to access all of them or what they really offer. That being the case, here’s an overview of how you can (and can’t) play Minecraft Legends with friends.
Minecraft Legends: Is There Splitscreen Multiplayer?
Unfortunately, there are no splitscreen multiplayer or couch co-op multiplayer options in Minecraft Legends. While you can play with friends online, there is no way to share the game while sharing a screen.

When it comes to the films of Sion Sono, the one thing they all have in common is that they are all, in one way or another, a total gonzo cinematic experience that generally defies the constructs of traditional visual storytelling. And his latest, Prisoners of the Ghostland, very much keeps that tradition alive with his East meets West post-apocalyptic genre mashup that has elements of classic spaghetti westerns, Mad Max, Escape from New York, and Versus coursing through its very amped-up veins. While Prisoners of the Ghostland is uneven at times, and the story loses some of its energy in the latter half, the parts that do work about it work exceedingly well, and I guarantee this is a film that fans will be debating and discussing for years to come.
It’s hard to give a definitive plot summary for Ghostland simply because there is A Lot going on,...

NBCUniversal has decided to shut down its national sports cable network, Nbcsn, by the end of this year.
Much of its network’s programming, including the NHL, NASCAR and English Premier League, will move over to USA Network and streaming service Peacock. USA will begin to simulcast some of Nbcsn’s games this year until the network winds down completely. The decision also comes as NBC is in its final year under its current NHL rights deal. It’s media deal with the Premier League expires next year.
“We’re all aware of how quickly the media landscape is evolving, and our Company is taking thoughtful steps to stay ahead of these trends wherever possible and, in many instances, help set them,” NBC Sports president Pete Bevacqua said in a memo on Friday. “At the conclusion of 2021, we have decided that the best strategic next step for our Sports Group...

Ryûhei Kitamura’s Versus (2000) is now available on Blu-ray from Arrow Video
A relentless one-of-a-kind sensory assault chock full of hyper-kinetic fight scenes, gangster shootouts, sword-slashing violence and gory zombie horror, Versus was a key title amongst the barrage of innovative horror and action movies that appeared as if from nowhere from Japan at the turn of the millennium, leading to a new wave of appreciation for Asian extreme cinema.
A mysterious face-off in a wooded clearing between two escaped convicts and a carload of sharply dressed yakuza holding a beautiful woman captive ends in hails of bullets and showers of blood. The location for this violent encounter is the mythic Forest of Resurrection, the site of the 444th portal of the 666 hidden gates that link this earthly domain to the netherworld and it didn t get this name for nothing. For this Tuesday, we don’t have a ton of Blu-ray and DVD releases on tap this week, but we do have some incredible titles coming out, once again proving that it’s quality over quantity. If you haven’t had a chance to see it just yet, Brandon Cronenberg’s Possessor Uncut arrives on Tuesday on multiple formats, and coincidentally enough, Total Recall is getting a 30th anniversary 4K release this week, too, and the films pair extremely well for a double feature.
Other films headed home on December 8th include She Dies Tomorrow, Smiley Face Killers, a 2-Disc Special Edition release for Versus from Ryûhei Kitamura, Black Pumpkin, The Facility, and Sympathy.
Possessor Uncut
From the visionary mind of writer/director Brandon Cronenberg, Possessor is an arresting sci-fi thriller about elite corporate assassin Tasya Vos. Using brain-implant technology, Vos takes control of other people s bodies to execute high-profile targets.

Years ago, when DVD was in its infancy, I used to frequent a few DVD forums where people would discuss not only this new format but also have in-depth discussions about films that never made it to these shores – oftentimes due to said films getting fancy limited edition box set release; and sometimes (cough) bootleg (cough) discs of certain, more exploitative, films would be passed between members.
That’s how I discovered Versus, the third film from director Ryûhei Kitamura – as a bootleg Dvdr. A bootleg without subtitles, without any information beyond the sheer enthusiasm other people had for the film. And I was blown away. Versus‘ reputation kept growing, eventually getting a legitimate UK DVD release from the now-defunct Tartan Films.

The range of pricing in VOD play has never been so clear. Two films at the extreme ranges of budget and premium stand out among new releases. At $3.99, which represents rock-bottom for a new film, Dinesh D’Souza’s latest right-wing polemic “Trump Card” is #1 at both Apple TV and Google Play, charts that rank by transaction volume.
At the same time, Disney’s “Mulan” is now available on platforms beyond Disney+ for $29.99, and is #1 at the revenue-based FandangoNow. “Ava” also continues its successful showings, with first place at Spectrum.
“Trump Card” is pitched as an expose of “socialism, corruption, and the deep state,” and clearly aimed at Election Day interest. In his past films (which received theatrical release), D’Souza preferred to specifically demonize Barack Obama or Hillary Clinton. This time, the target is far broader than the tougher-to-hate Joe Biden. It placed #2 at FandangoNow, where its low price hurts its ranking.

Director Ryuhei Kitamura has carved out a niche in creating action horror films that revel in the gore. Few things are as scary as real life these days, but for those seeking more refined thrills and chills, this year’s Fantasia International Film Festival continues to provide the best in “genre” entertainment. While the “genre” moniker is wide-ranging enough to stir up images of everything from slasher films to kung fu epics, the annual Canadian festival has consistently stretched the concept to embrace all sorts of off-beat features that go somehow beyond the norm of mainstream cinema.
This year’s lineup is no different, encompassing not just terrifying horror movies and wild martial arts action, but true stories about unique people, unexpected romantic dramas, even a careful examination of how a cute cartoon frog became a symbol of hate. If it’s weird or wacky, it just might land at Fantasia.
This year’s festival runs August 20 through September 2, though it is only available online to Canadian audiences.

Anjelika Washington, who currently stars on CW’s “Stargirl,” has revealed a previous show gave her a white stunt double in blackface.
The actor doesn’t reveal on which show the incident occurred, but said it happened in Los Angeles in 2017 on her fourth job as an actor. On her IMDb page, the Go90 series “Versus” is listed as her fourth TV project and was also released in 2017.
“I was very uncomfortable (as anyone would be to meet your double in blackface) so I spoke up for myself,” Washington wrote on Instagram on Thursday. “I pulled one of our producers aside and asked ‘Why isn’t my stunt double Black like me? Isn’t that the point of a double? She responded ‘Sure. But we couldn’t find a Black stunt double in L.A. Los Angeles doesn’t have many Black stunt performers. But aren’t you happy to be working?...

“Are you married?”
“I hate men.”
“Then, you have no hope.”
“My hope is to die.”
The conversation in the search description takes place on a ride home, under the pouring rain. It is initiated by a man, who happens to be Japan’s no. 3 hitman, and answered by a woman, who is a suicidal femme fatale. Witnessing their first exchange is a dead bird, hung between them. And in this weirdest of all film-noir films, the scene belongs to a long line of surreal, mind-boggling, out-of-this-world scene after scene after scene after scene.
“Japanese films are weird” is surely a stereotype most of you, if not all of you, have heard at least once before. It is not entirely true and not entirely mistaken. With cult titles like Funky Forest (2005), Hausu (1977), Big Man Japan (2007), Versus (2000), Tokyo Gore Police (2008), RoboGeisha (2009), Tetsuo the Iron Man...

Former WWE star Dave Bautista will finally (kind of) get to live his Gears of War dreams in Gears 5.
Actor and former WWE star Dave Bautista will appear in Gears 5 as a special playable character who is scheduled to be added to the game on September 15.
Bautista confirmed his appearance in the game by sending out a tweet that included the words "It's about damn time." That's seemingly a reference to his vocal desire to star in a Gears of War movie. He's been campaigning to lead such an adaptation for years, but it doesn't seem like the opportunity has come up yet.
Gears 5 developers The Coalition released a statement to Bleacher Report earlier in which they confirmed Bautista's appearance and shared a little more information regarding what, exactly, his role in the game will be.
"Dave has long been passionate about joining the Gears franchise, and...

Writer, producer, director and horror mega-fan Mick Garris assembles a cadre of like minds to create “Nightmare Cinema.” This anthology feature is basically a two-hour, big-screen version of the several macabre TV anthology series he’s been involved with since the mid-’80s “Amazing Stories.” Comprising five directors’ tales linked by the inimitable Mickey Rourke as a diabolical projectionist, this feature falls short of Garris’ greatest effort in that vein: His all-star 2005-07 cable pet project “Masters of Horror.” Each segment here has strengths and weaknesses. If there are no outright duds, there’s no real triumph either. But the whole is certainly diverse, lively and reference-packed enough to please horror fans attracted to this kind of enterprise, which are so often (see last year’s “Tales From the Hood 2”) so, so much worse. Cranked Up Films is releasing to 25 U.S. screens and on demand June 21.
