One of the best double features you could treat yourself to this year would be a back-to-back viewing of two Agnes Varda films starring Jane Birkin, rescued from obscurity in 2015 thanks to Cinelicious Pics. Both released originally in 1988, the imaginary bio-pic Jane B. Par Agnes V. and the provocative fictional narrative Kung-Fu Master! are available on a lovingly restored disc set (as the playful Venn diagram cover art implies, the titles are more inextricably connected than initially seems apparent). Both titles received a theatrical release at New York’s Lincoln Center, followed by a VOD release.

Set in gritty 1970s New York, the yet-to-be-titled rock 'n' roll drama pivots on the music business as punk and disco broke onto the scene. The series will star "Boardwalk Empire" Emmy winner Bobby Cannavale as Richie Finestra, a record executive grappling with professional and existential crises while his wife, an erstwhile model/actress played by Olivia Wilde, yearns for the Bohemian life she lived in the 1960s. Also starring are Ray Romano as Zak Yankovich, a seasoned music industry vet with a dark mob-fueled past, and Juno Temple as a streetwise, rising star assistant with subcultural savvy. The series will revolve in and around the fictional American Century Records. The rest of the cast includes: Andrew “Dice” Clay; Ato Essandoh; Max Casella; James Jagger; Jack Quaid; Birgitte Sorenson; P.J. Byrne; J.C. MacKenzie; Bo Dietl; Robert Funaro and Joe Caniano. A final international trailer is now online from Marc Webb’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2, starring Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Jamie Foxx, Dane DeHaan, Campbell Scott, Embeth Davidtz, Colm Feore, Paul Giamatti, and Sally Field.
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is directed by Marc Webb from a screenplay written by Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci, and Jeff Pinkner.
We’ve always known that Spider-Man’s most important battle has been within himself: the struggle between the ordinary obligations of Peter Parker and the extraordinary responsibilities of Spider-Man. But in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Peter Parker finds that a greater conflict lies ahead.
It’s great to be Spider-Man (Andrew Garfield). For Peter Parker, there’s no feeling quite like swinging between skyscrapers, embracing being the hero, and spending time with Gwen (Emma Stone). But being Spider-Man comes at a price: only Spider-Man can protect his fellow New Yorkers from the formidable villains that threaten the city.

Actor-turned-indie filmmaker Campbell Scott has signed on to direct and star in an upcoming adaptation of the 1977 novel “A Book of Common Prayer” by Joan Didion. The story centers on two women in a fictional Central American country on the verge of revolution. One woman married into a powerful political family, the other has seen her marriage fall apart and her daughter run away with a group of Marxist radicals. Campbell has been in the acting game for a long time, and was most recently seen as Peter Parker’s father in “The Amazing Spider-Man.” It is unclear what part he will play in ‘Prayer.’ As a director, he has made such films as “Final,” “Company Retreat,” and most notably “Off The Map,” an indie about a family of naturalists living in the New Mexico desert that was well-received by critics. It will be a jump for him to do...

Marking a potentially monumental pivot point in his already eclectic career, stand-up comedian turned actor/director/producer/screenwriter Mike Birbiglia has taken his personal tale of failed relationships, comedic development, and serious sleep disorders from the stage to the page and finally to the big screen. The conversion between mediums is flawless, gaining a variety of story expanding tricks this time around that can only come with the visual format. Sleepwalk With Me, winner of the Audience Award at Sundance last year, aches with the anxieties of long term relationship commitment and the struggles of a fledgling comedian while Birbiglia wittily breaks character to orate his tale directly to the audience a la Woody Allen in Annie Hall.
In order to avoid misrepresentation of the people in his life, Birbiglia’s story has been marginally fictionalized. Mike is now Matt , but they are one and the same. To everyone but him,...

Chicago – I’ll miss Tommy Gavin. FX officially said goodbye this month to the final survivor of their breakthrough slate of dramas as “Rescue Me” joined “The Shield” and “Nip/Tuck” in the great cable show graveyard in the sky. Welcome to another week of TV Or Not TV where I really wanted to like The Cape and SNL.
After finally having the opportunity to watch The Cape I can see where the creators of the show wanted to go with it, but I think they may have fallen victim to executive involvement. We get to see where he gets his training and his titular cape. We get to see how he gets teamed up with the blogger Orwell and we see where his motivation to become a super hero comes from. If you're a Lost fanatic like me, you were likely as glued to the television screen as I was last Tuesday night when the final season of this magnificent sci-fi show premiered. Like many of you, I was scratching my head as to what the hell the writers are up to for this season, and was rabidly speculating theories with my friends.
Amidst the brain melting scrutinizing, however, I found the time to geek out over two guest stars I love: the always likable John Hawkes (Deadwood, Eastbound & Down) and Japanese badass Hiroyuki Sanada (Ring, The Twilight Samurai, Sunshine).
Over the years, many recognizable actors have stopped by to do guest spots on the show, to compliment the already spectacular regular cast. While revisiting all five previous seasons of Lost in anticipation of the sixth and last season, I made a point to note all the known guest stars I spotted.

Scripted by the "Coen-sisters", Jill and Karen Sprecher (sister and creative partner), The Convincer will feature a trio of vet indie actors in Billy Crudup, Greg Kinnear and Alan Arkin (who was also featured in Sprecher's 13 Convos...) in a story about a desperate insurance salesman who devises a plot to obtain a rare violin. - 13 Conversations About One Thing has the distinction of being a rare "Matthew McConaughey film" that I've actually cared about (Lone Star and Dazed and Confused are the other two), but Jill Sprecher's sophomore film also happens to have been a Top 20 film of mine back in 2002. The pic received a long theatrical run from the Spc folks, was shown at Venice, Tiff and Sundance, but apart from producing about a dozen shows of Big Love, the film didn't culminate into full fledged filmmaking career for Sprecher. That inactivity is officially finished with as of now.

So another year has passed and its time for another round of awards for the people who make the television shows we like to watch.
Television is interesting these days. Never before have we seen such great, creative output. Never before have we been subjected to such drivel. It all gets paraded before us tonight, as we watch the 61st Primetime Emmy Awards (handed out, it should be noted, by the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences) on CBS, CTV in Canada.

Interesting that the Emmys chose to introduce the 2009 edition of the Primetime awards by harkening back to the early days of television. Especially as the business of television has never been closer to a complete collapse. Oh, announcer who is trying so hard to sound like a TV host from the '50s. You don't sound at all like you're a three pack-a-day smoker.

The Emmys are once again almost upon us and there is nothing I find more satisfying than looking down a list of nominees. I don’t know, I just really like it. Anyway, I know many people might not care too much about the Emmys, I’m more of a Golden Globe man myself, but you do have to give it to them for giving 30 Rock the Emmy for best comedy two year in a row, if you don’t know that show Rocks!! So here’s the list and a few comments I thought I’d add to the nominees.
Best Comedy Series
Entourage
Family Guy-Really hope this show doesn’t win, not a big fan as so many others are.
Flight of the Conchords-i’d really like to see this show win, but it definitely won’t.
How I Met Your Mother-I’d also like to see this one win too.

It's a good day for funny people, especially if your name is Tina Fey or Seth MacFarlane.
Fey's series, 30 Rock, was handed 22 Emmy nominations this morning, which stands as a record for a comedy series. She and Alec Baldwin were also nominated for acting awards. Plus, for the first time some of the other actors on NBC's laffer were recognized. Jane Krakowski, Jack McBrayer and Tracy Morgan all picked up supporting nominations.
MacFarlane's Family Guy was also nominated for best comedy series, the first time an animated show has cracked that category since The Flintstones in 1961. Two years ago MacFarlane decided to pull his show from contention in the animated series category to have it considered for best comedy.
Mad Men, the drama about the advertising world in the sixties, picked up 16 nominations in the drama categories, including a best actor nod for Jon Hamm. Hamm is also nominated as...

• Fango got word that Anchor Bay will release Julian Doyle’s Chemical Wedding, under the new title of Crowley, in late first quarter 2009. Doyle also scripted the movie with Iron Maiden frontman Bruce Dickinson.
The movie stars Simon Callow as a Cambridge University professor who becomes possessed by the spirit of notorious occultist Aleister Crowley. Kal Weber, Lucy Cudden, Jud Charlton, Paul McDowell and John (Mirrors) Shrapnel co-star. Disc details haven’t been solidified, but we’re told there will be an audio commentary and behind-the-scenes footage. The Bay also alerted Fango that it’ll put the 20th Anniversary Edition of Hellraiser out on Blu-ray in April, with all the extras from the DVD. And the company’s cover art for Gilles Paquet-Brenner’s Walled In, starring Mischa Barton and set to hit disc March 17, has surfaced; we’ll have the specs on that one soon.

Anne Hathaway has signed on to star in Burr Steers’s romantic comedy “The Fiance” for Warner Bros.
Variety says the film follows a woman who calls off her wedding and dumps her seemingly perfect fiancé in order to figure out who she really is. Her parents, however, have different plans for her.
Dyanne Stempel and Jennifer Robinson wrote the original script, with Etan Cohen doing the rewrite. Cohen recently wrote “Tropic Thunder” and just completed the script for an upcoming Sherlock Holmes project with Will Ferrell and Sacha Baron Cohen.
Hathaway, one of Hollywood’s busiest actresses, is currently onscreen in “Rachel Getting Married.” She will next be seen in Gary Winick’s “Bride Wars,” followed by Tim Burton’s “Alice in Wonderland.”
Steers, whose credits include 2002’s dramedy “Igby Goes Down” (interesting flick by the way), just wrapped “17 Again” with Zac Efron in the lead.

"I used to joke I'm discovered every three years," says Campbell Scott. "It keeps happening, which is fine. I prefer to disappear as an actor and then come back in a slightly different variation. But I can't disappear for too long because then I have no career. It's an interesting balance. I try to do a high-profile project like a TV series, Six Degrees, and be recognized on the subway, and then…do The Atheist."The latter is a solo play by Ronan Noone currently running Off-Broadway at the Culture Project. Reprising his performance from the play's Williamstown Theatre Festival run last summer, Scott portrays morally bankrupt journalist Augustine Early, who will do virtually anything to get the sleazy goods on someone of consequence. Early talks to the audience throughout the play as a camera records him matter-of-factly recounting his less-than-exemplary life. While he's a multilayered figure — repellent, charming, funny...
