Feeling bad after
Goingbegging14 February 2015
"I wish it had never happened." How easily we trot-out those words, in a courtroom atmosphere of logic and reason.

It's clear from this 90-minute interview that Monica Lewinsky's mind was a maelstrom of confusion when she caught the eye of the most powerful man on earth, and not much has changed since. It is doubtful even now that she has recovered her bearings, and has got any idea of who she is or what she is. But 'Monica in Black and White' may start to give us a clue.

If the 'black and white' pun leads you to expect a matter-of-fact documentary, shorn of passion and prejudice, then you will be disappointed. But the unusual monochrome treatment is a success, eliminating much distraction, and incidentally bringing out the best in her looks. Like certain actresses (Vivien Leigh, Julie Christie), she simply photographs better in black and white, whereas colour always manages to give her an unreal look, like some computerised doll.

But the one who really looks unreal is Linda Tripp, and we can understand Monica's screech of outrage when she realised that her intimate chats with Linda were being recorded and beamed into half-a-billion sitting-rooms. At one point, she shows a gleam of insight into Tripp: "You have no self-esteem." Truly, Linda seems to live in some dark, cheerless zone.

Is Monica any better placed? Her fury at Clinton's memoirs had made her sound self-important. (But when you knock the Pope's visit into second place on the TV news, you get that way.) Here she tries to avoid victim talk - wisely too, after someone asked her whether she'd ever considered Hillary Clinton's feelings, and she blurted "I didn't expect her to find out." At times, she breaks down under pressure, but this was, after all, the first public question-and-answer grilling she had ever let herself in for. And she does inject a little humour into the proceedings ("I'm wired - just so you all know that."). When one self-righteous questioner declares his disgust at the whole issue, she is quick to fire back "Why did you come here?", to general applause.

A martyr she is not. Any idea that her relationship with Clinton might have developed into something bigger is as silly as Marilyn Monroe's belief that Kennedy was about to divorce Jackie for her. In any case, Monica was still carrying on the affair with her college drama-coach all along.

Still, it's hard not to wish her well, after all she's gone through, including legal bills that threatened to bankrupt her. Perhaps the experience has given her the resilience to start again, somewhere a nice long way from the Oval Office.

I was looking forward to watching this documentary. But I thought people would be asking the obvious questions... "so how long was it?" "what kind of cigar?" "so how much can you actually fit inside your mouth?"...that type of stuff. It was pretty informative but it was like they were trying to make us feel sorry for Monica Lewinsky. I know she went through a lot with the PRESIDENT emotionally, but geees...take some of the blame too sweetheart! It was as if she was totally innocent in the whole thing. And the way she bashed Hillary a couple times was great!! All in all I thought it was a pretty good documentary.

Monica's side, finally!
dlarsonmjf20 September 2005
The producers, directors and editors did a really good job of not only letting Monica present her side of the story (which was not readily available during the scandal), but in placing Monica's experience within the context of what was taking place. The cinematography and editing was very well done and provided a great deal of empathy and insight into her state of mind while being the butt of the country's jokes. There were some good questions asked about responsibility, both hers and Clinton's, and it leaves you with questions about Andy Blieler's motivations. Should Blieler have been questioned more about his part in having an affair with a teenage student? Why was he let off so easy? I wish HBO would re-run this and that they would release this on DVD. Note to filmmakers and Monica: I think there is a market for this side of the story. Certainly academics would and should be interested in sharing this with their students. This program gives a side to the madness of the whole scandal that as media consumers really had not seen before nor had most of us considered. Well done!

The title had it right

I had the pleasure of watching this last night and I have to say it was great. If you ever have the chance to see this, take the time to watch it. Black and White started with Monica sitting on the stage alone. The audience members were free to ask her whatever they wanted and she answered all their questions. It was nice for a change to hear her story, uncensored. It also gave an accurate time line of how all the events happened; along with questions and answers. This was a raw hour and a half look at the real Monica and her feelings and her story. It also showed her true personality-nice, funny, someone who has a heart. And she is just like any other twenty something you know. Only this one got too famous for the wrong reasons. This will give people a look into the heart and mind of the girl named Monica.

Monica in Black and White.

I found Monica in Black and White really interesting to watch. Basically, Monica was sitting on a stage alone and there was an audience watching her and they were allowed to ask her any questions they wanted and she would answer them. There have been quite a few shows about Monica, but this is definitely the best one, as she is really being her true-self and seemed to be quite comfortable too. You can just see she's just a nice, fun-loving, normal woman who made a mistake and I hope her future will be good. I would recommend Monica in Black and White to people wanting to watch a good documentary style show. This is really good.

VERY EMOTIONAL AND FUN 2 WATCH
yanaaa30 March 2002
Monica in Black & White is not only helpful but is VERY VERY well directed (e.g: close up escalator, phone that was used by Linda Tripp etc.) this is where you get to see the real monica, a normal cute n' pretty young girl looking gor adventure... and finding it in the wrong place, at the wrong time, with the wrong people, it goes 2 show that patriostism vs. friendship....doesnt work!! this happens to the best of us, but just because ONE got famous does not mean she stands any lower that any other person who has cheated on their spouse, come to think of it, she's not the one who cheated on HER spouse. Well, ok, history aside. but here you get and EXTREMLY close look at her point of view and how insulted and hurt she was after all that took place. after watching this, i began to love monica for her originality and cool personality. i think you will too!!! thnk u

very informative, overdramatic
The Sheen7 March 2002
A documentary style account of how the affair between Lewinski and Clinton came about and ended with scandal. All along the way, peppered with a Q & A session between a group of students and Lewinski. The explanation of exactly what and how everything happened was there in the documentary. I did like that aspect of it since I never paid enough attention to it when it was going on. The Q & A session was not much more than Lewinski explaining how scared she was throughout the whole ordeal and how she felt betrayed by Tripp, etc, etc. As much as I hate to say it, it pretty much came across as not much more than an appeal for sympathy on Lewinski's part. Neither the questions nor the answers to any of them provided anything of interest, with the exception of one young lady who happened to be a former high school classmate of Lewinski.

As a result of it, I pretty much found every player in the whole affair to be pretty pathetic. Clinton, needless to say, was (and likely still is) a pig regarding the whole thing. He undoubtedly, being in his position at the time, should have assumed 99% of the responsibility. He's the president, married, and has a daughter, and decided to carry on an affair with a 22 year old intern. Not very bright. Lewinsky doesn't come across as too bright either. I remember one instance where she was recalling Tripp pressuring her for information and Monica replying with something along the lines of "and I never even told her I thought the President was cute!" Monica is 28 years old now, but oddly sounds like a bantering junior in high school. She was no doubt the victim of circumstance in both affairs mentioned, but in any case, she was a willing adult at both times and must ultimitely look within herself for her portion of responsibility.

Her former high school teacher, Andy something, whom she had an affair with for five years beginning when she was 19, hands down, wins the jackass award. The documentary shows footage of "Andy" and his dimwitted wife in front of their house explaining to the press how he couldn't hold it in any longer and the world needed to know what kind of a person Lewinski was. He told everyone of a letter of support he had recieied, signed by all his students. The wife praised everyone for all the calls of support she received from people "she doesn't even know!". I had to check the channel to make sure I was still watching the same program. I thought this guy had been kidnapped by terrorists, or possibly overcome amazing odds against some terminal illness. Then it hit me, these were the two dumbest people on earth, sharing their stupidity with the rest of us. Andy, you cheated on your wife for five years. Nothing "happened" to you. You took advantage of your position as a teacher and used it to manipulate the mind of a young woman, and at the same time, cheat on your wife. And Mrs. Andy, please get a clue. You are married to a jackass with high potential for pedophilia.

Linda Tripp came across as a close contender for the jackass award. I had no idea her role until the documentary explained it.

In the end, I felt well informed, felt sorry for no one and have become very aware that both the left and the right can be equally ruthless in judgement (perfectly exemplified by Michael Moore on Politically Incorrect bantering "isn't she the one who said.. I'm going to get my presidential kneepads?!").

All in all, definitely worth watching if you don't know the story.

and Jennifer Flowers was the enemy?

Twenty-three years after Linda Tripp became a pariah for exposing Monica as liar during Paula Jones case. Bill Clinton lied under oath that he had not had sexual relations with Paula or Monica. Today Trumps approval rating is at 54%. Hillary Clinton is at 27% This episode in history is more relevant than ever.

When will individuals take responsibility for their own actions
hwc3 September 2002
I must confess that no matter how artistically done this might appear, I can figure out neither what the producers of this were trying to accomplish nor what feelings they were trying to elicit towards this young, naïve, and just not very bright girl (other than to cash in on her 3 seconds of fame). Did this merit any effort approaching what went into making this? No. It was a botched by all parties handling of a 4th rate affair. Clinton's conquest was merely stealing candy from an infant. Putting it on the tube was grand larceny of a whole magnitude higher in taking forever the time from people's lives that they wasted by watching it. I kept waiting for something of substance to be revealed – even, at least, her infamous thong. Nothing. No new insights were given. No one showed any remorse. This makes even Republicans want for the decent scandals of the Watergate era.

Her story has been told too many times already.
mmkennedy16 March 2002
I sat through portions of this film on two occasions. I couldn't watch it all in one sitting because Monica Lewinsky is exceedingly annoying and now has even become boring by repeating, repeating, repeating the details of her flirtations and sexual encounters with former President Clinton. She has a singular point of view: that she is a victim. But the victim of what? In this dismal little documentary she laughingly admitted that she was young and stupid but seems to have gained no insight whatsoever as to the seriousness of the situation that in part her behavior caused. Somehow she still believes that she was equal to the President of the USA. I found that weird four years ago and still do. But Monica doesn't and that's why her continual recounting of this story from her perspective is really no longer interesting. I say, Monica: Tell it to the hand!
