Amazon has decided not to move forward with the Marvel live-action series, Silk: Spider Society, two years after green-lighting the project. The show, from producers Sony Pictures Television, was confirmed back in 2022 and was in the early stages of writing when Amazon pulled the plug on it.
The Walking Dead fame Angela Kang was attached to the series as the showrunner, whose deal with Amazon still remains in place as she will be working on other projects for the studio. Meanwhile, Prime Video has announced another series based on Marvel characters owned by Sony: Noir, starring Nicolas Cage.

Silk: Spider Society was said to be in the works for five years and was officially ordered in November 2022 for MGM+ and Prime Video.

After five years in development, “Silk: Spider Society” is no more. Variety reports that Amazon has scrapped plans for the live-action series entirely after the show already received a massive writers’ room overhaul in February. It’s a fate Spidey-fans shouldn’t be surprised by. When Amazon gave “Noir” with Nic Cage the green light last week, they provided no updates on “Silk: Spider Society,” leading many to assume the worst.

Earlier this week, we learned of plans for Noir, a new Spider-Man TV series coming to Amazon's Prime Video. While it's still early days, the project will see Nicolas Cage suit up after first playing the title character in 2018's animated Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.
There was no mention of Silk: Spider Society during Amazon's Upfronts earlier this week and, yesterday evening, we learned that the streamer has scrapped plans for the series.
The Hollywood Reporter has since chimed in, confirming that Phil Lord and Chris Miller remain attached to Sony's small screen Spider-Verse. The filmmakers "were handed control of the studio’s Marvel slate" as part of a deal first made with the studio in 2019.
"Plans for the interconnected Marvel slate of Sony shows remains in place, sources say, though only Noir will be part of that now unless another buyer for Silk emerges," the trade adds.

The Spider-Verse gives, and the Spider-Verse takes away. According to Deadline, the live-action TV series "Silk: Spider Society" is dead on arrival after years of development. Earlier this week, MGM+ and Prime Video (which were set to be the streaming home for the series) announced that Nicolas Cage will be starring in his own live-action Spider-Verse spinoff, "Noir," but didn't give any updates on "Silk" a series that was set to shine a spotlight on Korean-American spider-powered hero Cindy Moon. Rights for the character are reportedly set to revert back to Sony Pictures Television, which will continue looking for a home for the show.
Deadline says the series is no more, and their sources vary when it comes to the reason "Silk" isn't moving forward. However, the show has publicly gone through some turnover since even before it was first officially greenlit in 2022. Back in 2018, "Silk" was rumored to be...

Silk: Spider Society had the potential to make it to the screen but despite the initial development, the show was recently scrapped at Amazon. Sony Pictures Television’s producers ordered the development of the drama based on the characters from Marvel comics (Sony owns part of several Marvel characters).

Amazon Scraps Silk: Spider Society Live-Action Series - Main Image
Amazon Prime Video has scrapped the Spider-Man live-action spinoff series Silk: Spider Society after years of being stuck in development.
The project was first announced back in 2019 and it was intended to be the first Spider-Verse live-action series. The spinoff would have focused on Korean-American superhero Cindy Moon aka Silk.
However, the project remained in development throughout the years and there were reports in the past few months that the writers were all released as it was undergoing massive creative overhaul.

Two years after Silk: Spider Society was officially announced, the live-action Spider-Man series has been scrapped.
Silk: Spider Society was poised to become the first of several live-action Marvel shows based on Sony Pictures’ library of Spidey characters, but that honour will (likely) now go to Noir, the recently announced series starring Nicholas Cage.
Based on characters created by Dan Slott and Humberto Ramos, the series would have followed Cindy Moon, a Korean-American woman bitten by the same spider that bit Peter Parker, as she escapes imprisonment and searches for her missing family on her way to becoming the superhero known as Silk. As to why the series has been scrapped, that’s unknown, but Deadline believes the lengthy development period didn’t do it any favours.

At its first upfront presentation this week, Amazon announced a green light for Noir, based on the Marvel comic, with Nicolas Cage set to star. Noir was to be the second in a suite of live-action Spider-Man Universe series for MGM+ and Prime Video. However, there was no mention at the upfront of the first, Silk: Spider Society.

The writing was basically on the wall for this one.
Amazon’s Marvel drama Silk: Spider Society — from producers Sony Pictures Television — is no longer moving forward at the streamer. Sources say Sony TV, which owns rights to a fraction of the Marvel universe that features more than 900 characters, plans to shop the drama series from former Walking Dead showrunner Angela Kang. Kang, who departed her pact with AMC for what sources say is an eight-figure deal with Amazon, remains housed at the streamer and will continue to develop projects for the company.
Reps for Amazon and Sony declined to comment.
The decision to scrap Silk comes a mere two days after Amazon, during its first in-person pitch to Madison Avenue ad buyers, announced a Sony-produced Marvel series Noir, starring Nicolas Cage.
Noir, like Silk, is poised to launch first on Amazon’s linear network, MGM+, before debuting on the streamer.

5 Essential Spider-Man Noir Comics You Must Read - Main Image
The live-action adaptation of Spider-Man Noir is coming to Prime Video, and Nicolas Cage will reprise his role as the alternate version of the Friendly Neighbourhood superhero.
It was in 2009 when Marvel Comics started creating a line of Marvel Noir comics that included Spider-Man Noir.
Unlike regular Marvel comics, the noir line takes place in an alternate universe where stories of familiar Marvel characters are reinterpreted to feature a hardboiled / crime noir atmosphere set during the Great Depression era in the US.
Here are the Spider-Man Noir comics you should read, created by David Hine and Fabrice Sapolsky, alongside artists Carmine Di Giandomenico (who drew the first stories) and Marko Djurdjević (costume designer).

5 Characters We Could See In Prime Video's Spider-Man Noir - Main Image
MGM+ and Amazon Prime Video recently announced a new live-action adaptation of Spider-Man Noir. In addition to Nicolas Cage's portrayal of the alternate version of Spider-Man, several other characters could appear in the Noir series.
Set in 1930s New York City, fans are about to see a different Spider-Man in Noir. Compared to the usual bright red-and-blue Spider suit, Spider-Noir wears an all-black ensemble to tell a darker tale of the famous Wall Crawler.
But instead of using webs and sticking to the walls, he will be a gun-toting vigilante who prefers to parkour. In the place of supervillains, he will be fighting against corrupt politicians, crooked cops, and gangsters in his hometown of New York City.
So, here are the five characters we could see in Prime Video’s upcoming Spider-Man Noir.

The recently released Sugar, starring Colin Farrell, was a modern rethinking of the noir genre with references to old cinema – and audiences fell in love with it. However, in the sixth episode, fans were treated to such a twist that it seemed that the showrunner had simply left at that moment, leaving ChatGPT to finish writing the plot.
If that unexpected twist ruined the magic of Sugar's noir for you, these five TV shows will restore your faith in the genre.

Amazon’s first foray into the upfront events has seen a lot of announcements this morning. Earlier, it was announced that Nicolas Cage will be reprising his Spider-Man Noir character for the live-action show Noir. Then, one of Amazon’s biggest shows, The Boys, would get a surprising early fifth-season renewal. It was also reported that the hit show with Donald Glover and Maya Erskine, Mr. & Mrs. Smith, will be getting a second season, only without Donald Glover and Maya Erskine.
Deadline now reports that another announcement has been made for a future project with the streamer. Amazon issued a series order for a new TV adaptation of the popular Tomb Raider video game. Jen Salke, Head of Amazon & MGM Studios, has teased that it will be an “epic” and “globe-trotting” series. Spider-Man Noir may have spent the past few years off somewhere staring at matches as they burn, but the hilariously melodramatic Spider-Verse character played by Nicolas Cage will officially return in a new show on MGM+ and Amazon's Prime Video, according to Variety. What's wilder: the show will be live action.
The new show will be called "Noir," and this isn't the first time we've heard about it: the show was first announced back in February 2023, but Cage's casting wasn't confirmed at that time. In fact, a month earlier the beloved actor actually told ScreenRant that he wasn't going to be included in "Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse," a decision he seemed bummed about. "You'd have to ask Sony," he told the outlet when asked about the future of his character. "No one's spoken to me about that ... I wish they would. I love Spider-Man Noir, too. I think that's a great character.

The Boys is one of the most popular superhero series in the world at this moment. The twisted take on the superhero genre, adapted from the comic book of the same name, became a major hit for Amazon Prime and a series that has pushed the boundaries of what can be shown on TV in more ways than one. After three successful seasons and a spin-off series, the fourth season of The Boys is coming back later this year, with the premiere scheduled for June 13, 2024 but today, a month before the upcoming season’s premiere, we have received confirmation that The Boys have been renewed for Season 5, which is absolutely amazing!
Not much has been revealed at this point, but Amazon has released a short teaser video featuring Kimiko, which confirms the renewal. As you might have guessed, we are going to show this teaser to you in the upcoming paragraphs.

After lending his voice to the character in 2018's Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, Nicolas Cage is set to reprise the role of Spider-Man Noir in MGM+ and Prime Video's Noir.
According to Variety, the series will debut in the U.S. on MGM+'s linear channel before launching globally on Amazon's streaming service. News of plans for Noir first broke last year, but Cage's involvement was only ever rumoured.

It’s official: Mr. & Mrs. Smith will be back on the case.
Amazon kicked off its inaugural meeting with Madison Avenue ad buyers Tuesday with a slew of announcements, including news that the action series starring Donald Glover and Maya Erskine has been renewed for a second season.
A reimagining of the 2005 feature that starred Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, Glover co-created the series with his Atlanta colleague Francesca Sloane, with the latter returning as showrunner for season two. It’s unclear if Glover and Erskine will return to star as Amazon has not formally confirmed any casting for the newly ordered season.
The series was originally poised to star Glover alongside Fleabag favorite Phoebe Waller-Bridge, with the Star Wars duo also serving as co-creators. But, as Glover explained in a THR cover story, the friends disagreed on a larger concept for the reimagined Smith and agreed to part ways.

One of the Spider-Man variations that stole scenes in the 2018 animated film from Sony, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, was Spider-Man Noir. The character had the impeccable pipes of Nicolas Cage to bring his character to life and, Deadline now reports that the Marvel comic property has just been given a greenlight by Prime Video and MGM+ for a live-action series, complete with Cage in the role. The series titled Noir has been in development for over a year from Oren Uziel and Steve Lightfoot, who will be serving as co-showrunners and executive producers.
It’s also reported that Harry Bradbeer, the Emmy-winning director of Fleabag and Killing Eve, is set to direct and executive produce the first two episodes. The show was also developed with the Academy Award-winning team who wrote and produced Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse — Phil Lord, Christopher Miller, and Amy Pascal, who will all also serve on the series as executive producers.

We’ll spare you the Thin Lizzy jokes — you likely already know The Boys are back in town as of June 13 for a fourth season of superpowered satire. But it looks like they’re going to be sticking around past the summer, as Amazon has just announced a Season 5 renewal for Eric Kripke’s adaptation of the eponymous comic-book series by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson.
The news comes as part of Prime Video’s (and Amazon’s) first-ever upfront presentation, which kicked off with the news of Noir, a live-action Spider-Man series starring Nicolas Cage, and the streaming platform’s very own Jeopardy! show, Pop Culture Jeopardy!, which is produced by Sony Pictures Television.

Put on your fedora and lightly billowing cloak, and listen to what those Spidey-senses are telling you: could it possibly be true? Are we really getting a live-action adaptation of Spider-Man Noir, with none other than Nicolas Cage stepping up to solve early 20th Century mysteries with bonus Spider-powers? Somehow, we’ve ended up in the timeline where this is, in fact, real. Prime Video is stepping up to produce Noir, a live-action Spider-Man Noir series – and Cage is officially taking on the role.
Cage famously voiced Spider-Man Noir to incredible effect in animated feature Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse, and the prospect of seeing him inhabit the role physically too is a tantalising one. Oren Uziel and Steve Lightfoot are set to act as showrunners, while Phil Lord, Christopher Miller, and Amy Pascal are all on board as producers. Nicolas Cage is going back into the Spider-Verse. Amazon, during its first-ever upfront presentation, announced that Cage will star in “Noir,” the live-action series based on the Spider-Man Noir comic series from Marvel.
Way back in early 2023, IndieWire reported that Amazon was in development on a live-action series inspired by the Spider-Man Noir character, who Cage famously portrayed in the animated “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” as a grizzled, tortured, black-and-white noir gumshoe who also happened to be a superhero bitten by a radioactive spider. But no cast had been confirmed for the live-action show, and Amazon surprised advertisers by revealing that Cage would step back into the role, making it the first time he’s done a TV series since he filmed a pilot at the start of his career.

The trailer of season 4 of The Boys saw many surprises, including a return from Black Noir. The iconic character was killed at the end of season 3 by the Homelander for not telling him about his father. However, the new season sees the silent, masked hero returning to fight Billy the Butcher and the gang in an action-packed scene.
The trailer sees a hand-to-hand combat between Butcher and Black Noir at an office. While fans were excited to see Black Noir returning, they were greeted with an appearance from Gen V’s Asa Germann, who plays Sam Riordan. This sparked a fan theory that Riordan would don the Black Noir suit in the upcoming season.

Few actors stack up against the greatness of Colin Farrell. The Irish actor rose to the top of Hollywood but struggled with alcohol and drugs. His comeback, beginning in 2008’s In Bruges, has resulted in an over fifteen-year run of greatness. As the lead of Sugar, a new series from Apple TV+, Farrell once again shines. Through empathy and kindness, he makes Sugar a uniquely human show. Yet, on occasion, the show dips into style over substance. It’s a huge win for Apple TV+ and for Noir fans everywhere.
Sugar – The Plot
The titular John Sugar (Farrell) works as a private investigator, focusing on missing persons cases. His techniques are odd, and his partner Ruby (Kirby) demands he take a break. Despite a well-earned vacation, Sugar cannot resist a call from Jonathan Siegel (James Cromwell), a famed Hollywood producer. However, Siegel’s granddaughter Olivia has gone missing. What if crisis-whammies Nordic drama producers would now tap into other European stories instead of staying in the Nordic bubble and self-sufficient eco-system of mixed national and regional private and public coin? Would it be payback time for European partners who until now have bought into the Nordic Noir, without some form of reciprocity?
The question was raised by Belgium producer Helen Perquy from Banijay Benelux’s Jonnydepony at this week’s Göteborg TV Drama Vision, at a panel which looked into the current Nordic drama production mayhem and possible solutions.
“In Belgium, we do have soft money, tax shelters, Vaf [Flanders Audiovisual Fund], Screen Flanders but you guys in the Nordics have had way more money from broadcasters and global streamers, while we’ve had to be creative [with our financing],” said Perquy.
“For years we’ve watched your series and films, they’ve been up there,” noted the producer, raising her arm up in the air.

After she becomes separated from a late-night party, a young woman’s evening takes a sinister turn when she finds herself being stalked by a large predator. Nikita Kibirev’s animated music video for adiiilya and szdåt‘s Noir is a thrilling, visually-dynamic exploration of obsession and toxic masculinity. Kibirev takes the internal emotive state of his characters and makes it external through a fragmented, comic book like animation aesthetic. The result is a completely spectacular visual feast with a strong thematic exploration of knotty codependent relationships. When we first watched Noir we knew we had to speak with Kibirev about his creative process and the techniques he employed to deliver such an incredibly realised piece of work. You can read our full conversation with the filmmaker below where he discusses storyboarding, designing and animating at the same time, and the challenge of moulding your ideas within the music video format.
