We’ve now got less than two weeks to go before Christmas Day is here. Unfortunately for Doctor Who fans though, that comes with mixed emotions. While the annual holiday special is set to give us our first glimpse at Jodie Whittaker’s Thirteenth Doctor, it also means we have to say goodbye to Peter Capaldi’s twelfth incarnation in the process. The Scottish actor has absolutely owned the role over the past few years and it’s going to be tough to see him go.
Now, with his exit quickly approaching, the BBC has released a short new promo that briskly runs through the greatest moments of the Twelfth Doctor from the past four years of the show. Though not terribly long, it does a good job of compressing nearly all of Capaldi’s most memorable scenes and speeches into a fairly short space of time.

This December’s Doctor Who Christmas special, “Twice Upon a Time,” is stuffed full of great guest stars. Not only will Harry Potter‘s David Bradley be appearing as the First Doctor, but Mark Gatiss and Pearl Mackie will be joining in as well to say goodbye to Peter Capaldi as he regenerates into Jodie Whittaker. The fan-baiting cameos don’t stop there, though. At least, not if this new rumour is to be believed.
According to several fans on Twitter, Matt Smith has been spotted on the Doctor Who set, suggesting that the Eleventh Doctor will return in time for his successor’s regeneration. Smith previously cameoed in 2014’s “Deep Breath,” Peter Capaldi’s first episode, so it would bring things full circle if he was to appear in his last one, too.

Okay. All right. *Deep breath.*
There are these X-Men sort of people and they live in an invisible city on the moon. Their king and queen are named Black Bolt (his voice can kill you) and Medusa (her hair can kill you). Black Bolt’s brother is named Maximus, and he’s played by Ramsay Bolton, and Maximus is like the Tyrion Lannister of the Inhumans because unlike the rest of the royal family, he doesn’t have any mutant powers.

If there’s one downside to the great news that Jodie Whittaker is joining Doctor Who as its first ever female Doctor this Christmas, it means that we don’t have much longer left with the amazing Peter Capaldi. The Scottish actor has proven himself born to play the part of the centuries-old Time Lord over the past three seasons and his performance has been reliably brilliant throughout.
There’s another important changeover to keep in mind, though, as this year’s Christmas special will also be the last episode helmed by Steven Moffat as showrunner after working on the hit series for six seasons. That’s a long time to spend on a project, especially one as time consuming as this, and the writer/director is clearly getting a bit emotional as his job comes to an end.

Deep breath in, deep breath out. Yes, the 2017 Oscars just rocked our world and it's time we talk about what just happened. In case you missed it, La La Land was mistakenly honored with the Best Picture award on Sunday evening. The Iranian director talks to Screen about capturing contemporary Iranian youth and Tehran in Malaria.
Iranian director Parviz Shahbazi makes his Venice debut with contemporary drama Malaria about two young elopers who find temporary refuge with a bohemian band in Tehran.
Ingeniously piecing the tale together through images found on a lost cell phone, Shahbazi paints an at once joyful and sombre picture of contemporary Tehran and the compromised reality of Iranian youth.
Iranian film and TV star Saed Soheili co-stars as the hot-headed Murry who flees the provinces with his girlfriend Hanna, played by big screen newcomer Saghar Ghanaat, incurring the wrath of her violent father.
Azarakhsh Farahani, brother of Golshifteh Farahani, also features in the cast as Avi, the chaotic leader of an impoverished rock band called Malaria who picks-up the couple as they thumb a lift to Tehran.

Take this with a grain of salt, but there's a chance writer Dan Harmon may have leaked a spoiler for Marvel Studios' upcoming film Doctor Strange. If you don't want to know what that spoiler could be, it's best to turn back now.
As you know, word broke last week that Harmon was brought on to write some scenes for "additional photography" for the movie, presumably to add some more humor to the screenplay (that assumption takes Harmon's past writing work into account). This could be anything from a post-credits sequence to a script-wide punch-up that could provide the basis for Marvel Studios' built-in reshoots process, but now there's word that Harmon may have leaked a big reveal about the true villain of the new movie.
Ready? Deep breath: CinemaBlend pointed to a Reddit thread which revealed a screengrab from Harmon's computer from his Harmontown presentation at this year's San Diego Comic-Con,...

Of all the things to expect on the Internet, the least was probably the reaction that seems to have overwhelmingly greeted the first full trailer for David Ayer’s Suicide Squad. Having been a punching bag for fans outraged at the new direction of the Joker and the perceived uneven tone of the Comic Con footage, the film is now being talked about in far more glowing terms. The hype train is firmly back on the tracks.
Kevin Smith got to see the trailer before anyone else – it pays to have friends at DC – and he predicted the film is going to be shockingly good:
“I think this is their Guardians of the Galaxy. It’s going to be a sneak f***king stealth hit.”
And that now seems to be the general consensus: excitement taking the place of eye-rolling at stories of Leto staying in character, or his grill,...

The X-Men have more lives than a cat with a lazarus pit. They’re probably the super-team in both Marvel or DC with the highest percentage of its membership having died at one point or another, and come back to life. And that’s saying something.
Cyclical death patterns are part and parcel of comic book law, of course, with deaths of major and minor character used as a common technique to boost sales, but the X-Men suffer more than most. The mutants tend to fall victim to a high mortality rate due to their popularity, and the sheer amount of them makes it easy to pick off the occasional member. It happens with such alarming frequency that even the characters make light of it.

Back in the leafy days of yore, when I was freelancing as a journalist, short story writer and… what am I forgetting here? Pornographer? Something like that, something skeevy and disreputable – oh, of course. Comic book writer! A long time ago. Something north of a half century ago, in fact.
Anyway, in the mid-sixties, in Marvel Comics’ midtown Manhattan offices, I never heard the word “pitch,” nor was I ever asked to execute one. I was sometimes asked for a document that looked like a pitch, smelled like a pitch, tasted like a pitch… (Okay, maybe not that last. I don’t know. I never tried tasting one. Is it too late?) What these were, these pitchy rectangles of paper, were what we called plots. We’d bat one of these plots out on a (probably manual) typewriter, give it to an editor who gave it to a pencil artist...

9.13 The Husbands Of River Song

Two things were bound to happen with the Doctor Who Christmas special this year.
One, that it would - as Christmas specials do - be a lighter, frothier piece of Who. We're well schooled in the drill of that by now, Yuletide regenerations excepted. And we weren't getting one of those, thank goodness.
Two, that it would thus be a very marked contrast for the direction that the show went in for the vast bulk of series 9 this year. The darker Who of the autumn was always going to give away to something warmer and lighter, with no shortage of fake snow.
After all, across the dozen episodes we've seen since September, horror has never been too...

Eye-patches, a yo-yo, Game Of Thrones and Benny Hill. Here are the geeky bits and pieces we noticed in Doctor Who's The Girl Who Died...
While Ashildr watches the centuries pass waiting until her paths cross with the Doctor again, here’s something she might want to read to the pass the time - it’s the fifth of our geekly, weekly viewing guides to the ninth series of Doctor Who, pulling together all of the references and callbacks, recurring themes and motifs, and tenuous connections that we thought were interesting enough to write about anyway.
As always, if you spot something that we haven’t, please do share it with us in the comments below - so far, you’ve proved that we have some impressively eagle-eyed readers out there! And remember - it’s just a bit of fun...

BBC One is giving viewers another chance to watch Doctor Who's two-part series premiere.
Episodes one and two - 'The Magician's Apprentice' and 'The Witch's Familiar' - will be repeated, in feature-length format, this Sunday at 3.15pm.
Doctor Who pulled in an overnight rating of 4.6m viewers last Saturday night, down over 2m from last series' opener - and Peter Capaldi's debut - 'Deep Breath'.
'The Witch's Familiar' will first air as a single instalment this Saturday at 7.45pm.
The episode will follow up on the Doctor's decision to abandon a young Davros - destined to become creator of the Daleks - on a battlefield.
"He abandons the child Davros to his fate which is not the right thing to do," Capaldi revealed. "So he's haunted by his moral failure."

Doctor Who series 9's first rating number didn't seem too high at first glance. But there's a (time) shift going on...
When David Tennant's tenure in the Tardis officially ended with The End Of Time Part 2, it was, it's fair to say, a sizeable moment. On January 1st 2011, 10.4 million viewers were reported to have tuned in to see the episode as it screened, just over a third of all viewers watching TV at the time. The consolidated figures that arrived in February made even better reading: add in the BBC HD numbers, and the 1.3m iPlayer watchers, and The End Of Time Part 2 became only the third time that Doctor Who had been the most watched programme of the week on UK television, with 12.27 million viewers in total (according to Barb). There were DVD sales on top of that, too, as well as an international audience.

EastEnders tested pre-watershed limits last night, with Carol Jackson (Lindsey Coulson) branding her scheming brother Max (Jake Wood) a "complete and utter bastard".
Carol's outburst is far from the most traumatic event to occur on the BBC One soap in its 30-year run - or even in the past 12 months - but her potty mouth certainly ruffled a few feathers, with 29 people grumbling to Ofcom.
"People will complain about anything," you might think - and you'd be right. Below are just a few of the complaints made to UK regulator Ofcom in the past year - from hypnotism conspiracies to getting het up over helium.

The BBC have set a September 19th premiere date for the ninth season of the "Doctor Who" reboot and unveiled the first trailer for the new episodes.
The final shot is interesting - "Game of Thrones" star Maisie Williams guest stars next season as a character The Doctor is already familiar with, and there's even been rumors she's a younger version of the Doctor's granddaughter Susan.
The trailer was unveiled at a Comic Con panel in San Diego for the show today. Peter Capaldi (The Doctor), Jenna Coleman (Clara), Michelle Gomez (Missy) and creator Steven Moffat were on hand to talk about the new batch of episodes and what to expect with Collider.
While many of Capaldi's stories in the eighth season took place on Earth, most of the new season will be out in space. The Doctor and Clara will be more united and on a "more even keel" this season out.

Alec Baldwin's yoga instructor wife, 31, slipped into a lacy black bra and black underwear to proudly show off her body, just two days after giving birth to their second child together, son Rafael. The new addition joins daughter Carmen, 21 months. "Rafael is doing wonderfully! He is two days old now. Such a sweet little boy. I'm feeling well, been up with him every hour to two hours," Hilaria captioned the revealing photo above. "I have been planning on doing post belly photos but didn't know if I was gonna have the guts to actually follow through," she continued. "I hope you understand my intention here: I believe it is important to accept and love our form after going through a bit of a battle bringing life into this world.

The Supergirl pilot episode leaked late last week, in full and in high quality - genuine error or a publicity stunt?
Some believed that the comic book adaptation hitting the web - 6 months before its intended November launch on CBS - was a simple (if rather large) mistake, while conspiracy theorists argued that the pilot had been intentionally leaked to counter negative buzz following a lukewarm reception to the first series trailer.
Whatever the truth, the leak is far from the first incident of its kind. Episodes of popular TV shows have been popping up online ahead of broadcast for a while now - sometimes it's a matter of days, but sometimes it's months...

This review contains spoilers.
From ITV comes yet another Monday night drama to add to their roster of impressive output in recent times.
Safe House, from writer Michael Crompton (who recently penned ITV’s excellent Code of A Killer), sees Christopher Eccleston play ex-policeman Robert who has left the force behind him with his wife Katy, played by Marsha Thomason, for a quiet life in the beauty and tranquility, not to mention solitude, of the Lake District.
We quickly discover Robert left the police due to the the execution of a witness he was protecting, an event which continues to haunt him. He’s visited by his former colleague and friend Dci Mark Maxwell, Paterson Joseph, with a proposition for the couple.

Doctor Who series 8’s penultimate episode, Dark Water, has been confirmed as the most-complained-about Nu-Who episode…
Contains spoilers for Doctor Who series 8 episode 12 Dark Water
Here’s a mildly surprising one. Even though we all heard about the complaints made towards Steven Moffat’s Dark Water, it’s a bit of a surprise to hear that it’s the most-complained-about episode since the 2005 revival. Even including that Peter Kay episode.
That said, the complains in this instance presumably centred on the scarier elements of the episode. An episode, lest we forget, that began with Danny Pink’s abrupt death and also introduced the shocking concept that the dead remain conscious and still feel the pain of cremation.
The 19 complaints garnered by Dark Water are hardly a huge cause for concern though, not when compared to the 8.52 million people who tuned in, so we doubt Mr Moffat will be losing too much sleep over it.

They haven’t even had to dream it in recent years, either, thanks to the BBC’s cinema screenings of ‘event’ episodes such as 2013’s 50th anniversary special The Day of the Doctor and the Twelfth Doctor’s debut outing in Deep Breath last year.
They’re still waiting for the announcement of that bonafide Doctor Who film, though, and it looks like the Tardis is closing than ever to materialising in a movie theatre near you, if the ongoing behind the scenes murmurings are to be believed. It’s safe to say that the show’s format lends itself to a cinematic expedition and, while the possibilities for a feature-length escapade are quite literally endless, the writers wouldn’t necessarily have to look that far in their journey to transfer TV’s...

We would usually offer our congratulations to Doctor Who for winning an award, except in this case it really isn’t worthy. Deep Breath‘s Vastra/Jenny kiss has been nominated for a GLAAD award. You may recall that the kiss was banned in several countries in Asia, which may have something to do with the nomination. Ever since Doctor...
