Good execution, mostly...
Don Muvo6 August 2003
The director, screenwriters, cinematographer and the two leads deserve the warmest praise for what they have done here. The primary defect in this film is in the performances of the six supporting "brothers" and sisters roles. Only in the scenes where they supported the main characters were these characters worth watching. This is probably partly due to weaknesses in the script and partly to the weaknesses of the actors. It was even obvious from some of the outtakes on the DVD, that the brothers were supposed to have had outright murder in mind, this was thankfully edited out of the print, so it's obvious that the script could not have been perfect as originally submitted.

The director/screenwriter Gary Hardwick has mentioned that he had to adapt the original script to African American culture and shows himself here to be very talented. What is obvious from the fine performances of LL Cool J and Gabrielle Union, is that he certainly could have paid more attention to the minor roles than he did.

Such an uneven movie! LL Cool J and Gabrielle Union deserve a 10. Cinematography, a 10. Script, an 8 - the story is basically good - as a romantic comedy, it works! Director gets an 7. The rest of the brothers and sisters get a 3, if not lower. I'm thinking if I could send Hardwick an email and ask why, he would answer, "The studio got what they paid for." What a shame. There are a lot of moments where this film hits the ball out of the park, and so it needs to be recommended.

Nice Movie Overall
Mr_Sensitive8 February 2005
Another movie base on William Shakespeare - The Taming of the Shrew but this time a black and older people version. (No racism intended)

Three Friends hired Ray to escort Eva, so that she would be out of their marriage life after she influence too much on their wife.

Though I have seen this in Ten Things I Hate About You, I still very much enjoying this movie and somewhat surpass my expectation. LL Cool J is great here and the flow of the movie is just right.

Overall this is a good adaptation.

Recommendation: If You Are Over 25 Watch This, Younger Watch 10 Things I Hate About You.

Rating: 6.5/10 (Grade: C+)

Unbelievable yet entertaining love story
themarina15 January 2004
I enjoyed this movie. I'm a fan of LL Cool J (even though his acting isn't great) and was impressed with this unbelievable story of love (what woman alive would actually forgive him after what he did?) The acting was pushed at best but in the end, this movie still managed to crack a few laughs and entertain for the full hour and a half. A cute date movie....i guess.

Not just another "black" movie
LARRYLOVE71118 June 2003
A nice normal movie that happens to have an all black cast. I don't feel it was a "black movie". Cultural idioms aside, anyone could relate to the language and themes of the movie. Nicely done. I feel Gabby U really performed well in her role...made me forget it was her. LL gave a great performance as well. The worst was the Royale as the gay guy...just not happening: He needed to be more flamboyant to be funny...the lo-key thing didn't work, though he had some otherwise funny lines....the director MUST've held him back, cause I've seem this guy in action before...he's as funny as anybody, if not funnier than most.

All said, I'll probably buy this one on DVD. I hope these types of movies continue to be made.

one.

Just another rom-com or a clever Shakespearian adaptation?
emma-healy14 November 2014
Warning: Spoilers
The entertaining 'Deliver Us from Eva' released in 2003 is not your typical rom-com, it is also a loose adaption of William Shakespeare's famous 'Taming of the Shrew'. At first, this would most certainly come as a surprise to anyone who is familiar with Shakespeare's play but when you delve into the plot it becomes quite apparent that this is in fact based on the well-known Shakespearian drama. The clever writers James Iver Mattson, B.E Brauner and Gary Hardwick (who is also the director) took a very interesting approach to this quirky adaptation. 'Deliver Us from Eva' as your everyday predictable rom-com wouldn't necessarily be screaming ten out of ten, however, this rom-com in terms of an eccentric adaptation of the 'Taming of the Shrew' is undoubtedly calling for a gold star.

This film isn't promoted as a Shakespearian adaptation possibly because when people hear the word Shakespeare they immediately associate the word with the renaissance era. However, throughout the last two decades there have been numerous broad adaptions of Shakespeare whether it be Andy Fickman's 'She's the Man', Gil Junger's '10 Things I Hate About You' that is a broad adaptation of the 'Taming of the Shrew' also or 'Deliver Us From Eva'. Throughout the film there a subtle hints that this is a Shakespearian adaptation, which in my opinion add to the overall enjoyment of this film. When the two main characters Eva Dandrige (Gabriella Union) and Ray Adams (LL Cool J) go horse riding the horse is appropriately called Romeo, this brings to mind the famous Shakespearian character. The second subtle hint was one of Shakespeare's favorite plot devices, the fake death device; the fake death of Ray was certainly not just a coincidence. Although there were these subtle hints of Shakespeare, the plot was altered to an extent that if you didn't know this was a Shakespeare adaptation, you would be no the wiser after watching it.

Knowing that this is a loose adaptation, the characters are quite comparable to the 'Taming of the Shrew'. Eva is the equivalent to Katherine as she is headstrong, insulting and controlling. In the same way as the 'Taming of the Shrew', Eva tries to control her sisters and she insults nearly everyone she meets. But this slowly but surely changes when she meets Ray (who is similar to Petruchio). Ray has tamed her, she becomes nicer towards everyone and doesn't insult people anymore. This however, is not similar to the taming of Katherine who is starved and deprived of sleep until she becomes obedient. Gabriella Union gives a very convincing performance of the "shrew" with both her tone and facial expression really emphasising this. Ray isn't as similar to Petruchio as Eva is to Katherine but this is mostly down to the fact that it is in fact a rom-com and there is no room for starving the main character is a romantic drama. Ray is similar to Petruchio in the way he can take Eva's insults and doesn't get turned off by this but rather finds it somewhat charming. On the other hand, he isn't as eccentric or uncaring as Petruchio. LL Cool J gives a good performance of a typical man in a rom-com but doesn't preform as well as Union. This could be down to the fact that his performance isn't half as interesting or exciting as Petruchio plays in the 'Taming of the Shrew' because there is no twisted side to him. If watching this film without knowing it was an adaption, the only character that would stand out would be Eva and this is disappointing, as Petruchio should also stand out, as he is such a prominent character. The plot is mildly comparable to the 'Taming of the Shrew'. The most comparable part of the plot was when he Dandrige sisters' boyfriends/husbands pay Ray $5,000 to date Eva in order to be able to spend time with the Dandrige sisters which is similar to Petruchio only marrying Katherine for her money. Other than this plot similarity, it is easy to say that 'Deliver Us from Eva' is more so comparable to the 1999 '10 Things I Hate About You'. Again, if the viewer of this film didn't know it was an adaptation this could be seen as just a boring rom-com.

There are many people who would not be aware that this film has a Shakespearian background. Therefore, there are two ways to approach and rate this film: from the point of view of knowing it is an adaption and not knowing. Without knowing that this is an adaption I don't think the film would be near as intriguing or captivating; it may certainly come across as just another typical rom-com. For this reason it would be given a bad review, as it is a predictable film with a happily ever after ending. Then taking the case of knowing that this is an adaption certainly makes the film more interesting to watch and compare it with the 'Taming of the Shrew'. It cannot be denied that the writers and directors approach to this adaptation is very clever and quirky.

Eva is an unpleasant character who meddles in her sisters relationships. A womanizer is then paid to date her but trouble soon follows as the plan begins to backfire.
gemmahickey18 November 2014
Warning: Spoilers
The title of this movie already gives us the impression that Eva's character is one that is unpleasant. It is clear that the director is playing on the phrase "deliver us from evil" and this then gives us an impression of Eva's character before we even watch the movie. I think the title is both clever and imaginative in this way.

The introduction of this film is also very creative as the film opens up with the narrator telling us that he was killed. The narrator is Ray Adams, the guy that we will see Eva fall in love with. At the beginning of the film he points the blame at those who killed him, which is a clever way of introducing us to the main characters. It is not until the end of the movie that we understand what the narrator meant by all this and so throughout the movie the question of "why was Ray Adams killed and how did it happen?" remains in our minds. These scenes create a sense of mystery and encourage us to keep watching.

Character development is an aspect of the movie that I really admired. It is not until half way through the movie that we get to understand the reasons to why Eva is so uptight and serious all the time. We learn that after the death of her parents she had to take on the responsibility of looking after her three younger sisters. As we find out this information I find it hard not to sympathize with her. As the film goes on we get to see the vulnerable side of her as she attempts to open up to Ray. It is as though her relationship with him has tamed her and we now see a happier and more carefree woman. In this film adaptation it is not only Eva that changes throughout the movie but Ray also ends up being tamed. I really like how this adaptation allows for both characters to undergo changes. Before he met Eva he was a womanizer and showed women little respect but by the end of the movie he was a changed man. They both went through drastic changes by falling in love with each other and both became better people. I also think Gabriel Union and LL J Cool did an outstanding job at capturing their chemistry on screen. The chemistry sparkled between the two main characters and it was clear the director did a great job in the casting of these two.

This film adaptation is highly entertaining and full of comedy and drama. The beauty parlor scenes are my favorite as all the girls sit in the salon and gossip about their love lives and life in general. These scenes allow us to get to know the characters better but they are also some of the most comedic scenes. This film sometimes comes across more like a modern sitcom than an actual movie and is very unrealistic but at the same time I can't complain as I still enjoyed it.

An aspect of this film that I really did not like was the ending. It was clear that eventually Ray's deception would be uncovered and the truth would be revealed. However the ending was simply odd and too cliché for my liking. For an adaption that was so creative I think the director could have put more time into coming up with a better and less clichéd ending. Another aspect of this film that I didn't like was its overwhelming use of sex-related dialogue. In my opinion this film put far too much emphasis on sexual interactions. I feel as though this was the director's attempt at making the film more comedic however in my opinion it did the complete opposite.

Overall though the movie was enjoyable to watch but it is by no means amazing. It is enjoyable to watch simply due to its comedic moments. I think the director and film crew did an excellent job at adapting the script to an African American culture. It is a very creative and imaginative adaptation and I would recommend it to anyone that wants to watch something that will give them a good laugh as it certainly had me laughing throughout.

Deliver us from some faults that sort of ruined what could have been a better film
vincentlynch-moonoi30 January 2017
Warning: Spoilers
There's a lot to enjoy here, but ultimately one serious error prevents me from giving a rating of "7".

Although he's not a particularly great actor, it's hard not to enjoy LL Cool J, who here plays 'Ray', a blue collar worker who thinks of himself as a playa, but then actually falls in love.

I have long thought that not only is Gabrielle Union a really good actress, but also one of the most beautiful women in Hollywood. Her acting is fine, although there are issues with character continuity...but that's the fault of the writers and director.

Duane Martin is very good as the boyfriend of one of Union's sisters. I enjoyed him here; not sure why he has not been more successful.

The ladies who play the sisters of Union did not particularly impress me, although they did their jobs. Essence Atkins, Robinne Lee, and Meagan Good. Mel Jackson is good as one of the husbands, while Dartanyan Edmonds had a rather short career which pretty much ended after this film...and rightfully so. Royale Watkins is interesting as a gay hair dresser.

The problems here come with the script. Overall, its' a good premise -- Union is the pitchy oldest sister who is somewhat controlling of her sisters' lives...and of their husbands and boyfriends. And so, the husbands/boyfriend plot to get Union out of their hair by hiring the suave LL to romance her off her feet and out of their lives. Okay, that's good. One problem is that pitchy people don't suddenly become nice just because they're in love. So there's a continuity problem with Union's character. But the big letdown for me was the scene where the husbands/bf kidnap LL and stage a fake funeral. Before that the film had a problem deciding whether or not it was really a comedy, but then this just got ridiculous.

So while I liked the film, I also thought it had some major problems.

A lot of pain for little gain
wastebot9 February 2003
Watching it requires more from the audience than the actors. The story and direction is what you'd expect from religious TV. 4 of 10 simply because the overall effect isn't horrible, just lackluster.

Wait for a TV release. In fact, you can wait for it to appear on public TV since the R rating is really only there as part of a marketing gimmick to get more guys to watch. It's a television movie of the week with a few naughty words thrown in.

Yes, it's a romantic comedy, with little comedy, delivered just in time for Valentine's day because you'd have a hard time getting people to watch it for free at any other time of the year.

So what's positive about it? It can be funny and critical of some common social perceptions present in early 21st century USA. But there's a lot of pain for that gain.

Surprisingly Warm!!!
nifabs8 August 2003
Despite criticism, this manages to deliver a bit of comedy and drama.

Gabrielle Union gives a standout performance as the unbelievable Eva Dandridge who needs someone like Ray to knock her from her high horse but she's that way cos she's taken too many knocks from life. She is pure evil.

LL Cool J is a bit too neat or not too expressive maybe it's the role maybe not but he cuts a slightly bland figure.

Between the two of them, they manage to create a cracking chemistry that sizzles and makes all other characters pale by comparison.

This movie was touching and sincere for a Black movie(a trait which is played down in most Black flicks), there's been a recent departure from the gangsta and hood epics or drugs and money flicks.

Gabrielle Union was a delight to watch as ice queen Eva Dandridge(who's been jilted by a one time-fiancée), watching over her sisters with a ruthless passion and closely guarding her heart against intrusion. I kinda felt sympathy when I realised she'd given up on her life (when her parents died)to raise and care for her siblings, but the time came to take a backseat, she moved on and was woman enough to breach the gap she'd created between her siblings and their men.

LL Cool J was smooth as the player who took her on a bet. I admire the way he brought Eva down to earth, that's what women respect in a man. Knowing your own self worth, never kowtowing to them but meeting them at the right point and giving in only if need be. This may sound sexist but show me a sista or woman who'd respect her man if he yessed to her all the time. Not One!!

Gabrielle and J simply stole the movie, the supporting cast are just supporting(no insults meant), there was no one who came close to touching the two leads not because they were the stars but they infused strength and dynamism into their respective roles, they breathed life into them...

It's good to see Black movies with a forte like this; it portrays us as intelligent and coming of age, which we did centuries ago anyway!!

LEAD ME INTO THIS!!!!

Funny Film and I'm sure we can relate
Bluesradio627 April 2020
I'm sure we have all had the friend or relative member that likes to meddle, so I'm sure that we can relate to this movie....The acting was decent, but not great, and of course there is a rapper lead actor......Overall, the storyline is very true and even the fairytale ending isn't overly bad...I would recommend this as a fun fluff movie to watch....

I took for what it was supposed to be which is a fun movie
DunnDeeDaGreat12 February 2003
Deliver Us from Eva isn't a perfect film and it's not supposed. The film is a urban romantic comedy and the film does have a lot of heart. LL Cool J and Gaberille Union have very good chemisty togetehr and carry the film. Essence Attkins, Megan Good and Robinee Lee all dyme pieces also do acting jobs and the men in their lives played by Mel Jackson and Duane Martin make the film enjoyable also. If you just want a fresh fun movie then check this out.

Very Enjoyable
miken-324 January 2005
Warning: Spoilers
I caught this movie on cable the other night never hearing about it before and I was pleasantly surprised by this well-made and highly entertaining film.

Three friends hire a Romeo (Cool Jay) type "player" to try to romance and dump the ultimate "dragon lady" (Eva) who manipulates their women and eat up and spits out men without a thought. The idea is that the Romeo will dump Eva making her leave and then they can have control over their women and their lives.

Not to give anything away but the longer Cool Jay "romances" Eva, he finds himself forgetting his purpose and falling for Eva. Also, as Cool Jay gets closer to Eva, life only gets worse for the three friends that hired him, much to their chagrin.

Cool Jay gives an excellent and believable performance as the "player" and the actress that plays Eva is also perfect. There are several hilarious scenes that had me laughing out loud. The "Women only" club that is the beauty parlor has several enjoyable scenes as well.

Good Enough
PennyReviews25 September 2023
Romantic Comedy "Deliver us from Eva" is a light comedy that plays the story right.

The premisses of the story are ultilized perfectly, with the characters rocking a spot on chemistry, while their romantic relationship gradually develops. As for the sisters, they were adorable together. The brothers in law, moreover, were laugh out loud entertaining and really carried the comedy element when things turned too serious on the romantic front.

However, the story did got stale towards the ending. Still, the actors and actresses of the cast, especially the leading lady, did an amazing job with thier performances.

Umm no
ebtsamryad6 October 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I don't know where to begin or what to criticize first , the whole movie seems like a mess .

First of all the whole plot was fine , but I don't know how they managed to ruin such a story , they could've done it way better to be honest , They seemed to be in a rush , things happen too quickly , I don't think they've ever heard of something called give it a time . They didn't know what to focus on , they included too many characters and they wanted to show all of them , but they literally didn't show enough. For example people getting married , people die , some are having a child , some are moving to another city , some are having a new job , some are breaking up like bruh slow down . And even the main character Eva and ray , how in earth we didn't know more about their background, the scenario was literally like this , Hey when I was a kid I stole a lollipop hehe , peace out , now let's talk about something else .

They literally had two hours to represent a movie and such a good story but they couldn't. Everything was happening so fast . In reality that would never happen .

The acting was cheesy & the lines were cheesy but maybe because it was released 17 years ago.

Something I don't get is how in earth someone will fake someone else's death .. like that's just too much .. even if it's a comedy movie . And the whole kidnapping.. trapping .. running away .. like what is that .. what was that . And since Eva's sisters admire her so much .. how in earth would any of them forgive her boyfriend or husband after all of this is beyond me . So your husband hate your sister , Make fun of her , Pay a stranger to get her out of the way , even allowing the stranger to sleep with her , to sleep with his sister in law , then , after those two fall in love , they kidnap the guy and fake his death , this is just too much . And the sisters really thought that all of this was okay , that after all what happened , you think the best thing to do is get married or have a child . Are you kidding me .. shaking my head . The movie being a comedy genre is not a damn excuse .

sort of funny, but really cheesy ending
MLDinTN23 February 2004
If you like LL Cool J, then this movie is for you. It was pretty good and had some funny moments. Most of which come from the smart mouth comments made by no-nonsense Eva. There are also some good gossip scenes at the beauty shop. The story is nothing original; you know exactly where it is going. Of course, the player falls for the girl whose heart he is supposed to break. They just made a mistake at the end by having a really cheesy, knight comes riding in on a white horse, type of moment. It was too hollywood and didn't really go with the rest of the film.

FINAL VERDICT: There is no mystery with this movie. It is what it is. So, if you like mildly funny moments with a stereotypical romantic plot, then you may want to give this a try.

Enjoyable film
laj11256 February 2022
After reading amateur critics here, I am compelled to weigh in. This film is fun, light, and enjoyable. Gabrielle Union is a wonderful actress. She effortlessly handles this role and plays Eva so well that her character is quite annoying (and that's the point). LL Cool J does a decent job, but this role is earlier in his career and he has shown improvement over time as an actor. Overall the ensemble cast is plausible and good. This is a subtle comedy that is meant to tickle your funny bone not make you laugh out loud. I love to support Black cinema, so I recommend watching this film at any time, but especially during Black History Month. I support Black filmmakers and actors. Watch this film, you'll enjoy it.

LL and Gabriel good chemistry, but lame story and lame actors tired tired tired, old...
smakawhat2 March 2003
Warning: Spoilers
I was expecting this to be a standard chic flick, however, it was a little more than that. Problem is virtually everyone else in the cast is so lame and ham fisted that even the great chemistry between Gabriel Union and LL Cool J can't save the film.

It's too bad because there are some downright hilarious scenes, and some really good dialogue (almost all of it between LL and Gabriel). But the first half is just lame, the ending is so smarmly wrapped up in a happy feel good way (talk about ridiculous paint by the numbers), and for the most part, Gabriel's character (Eva) is just so horrid that you can't stand her presence on the screen. Unless perhaps you are of the female persuasion, then you probably relished it.

I suppose that's the point, but it went so overboard that it ends up making the movie just a pain of torture to watch whenever Eva gets in her "mood".

And what was the point of that musical number at the beginning anyway??

Don't bother. But its too bad cause the film had a chance..

Loved it
casik28 May 2004
This movie had me laughing out loud from beginning to end. I saw the DVD version so the LL Cool J and K-Ci & JoJo videos helped wrap up the story lines. Gabrielle Union and LL Cool J were amazing. It was great to watch the personality transformations as they happened. Even Jacqui lightened up a bit and she seemed more stiff than Eva at times. It's a really funny movie. You don't have to think too much, you can just sit back and enjoy. Make sure you watch the deleted scenes at the end as well. It helps to clear up some gaps. It actually would have been nice to have these re-added with the release of the DVD version. I don't know why filmmakers don't do that. See it! You won't regret it!

Predictable and lazily written
JoeytheBrit1 April 2010
Punning titles are rarely a promising sign in the world of movies. Too often it seems that the film has been fashioned around the title, and too often the title is the best thing about the film. Deliver Us From Eva isn't a badly-made movie, but it is a predictable and lazily-written one that eventually outstays its welcome despite some spirited performances from an attractive black cast.

Gabrielle Union plays the eponymous Eva, an uptight twenty-something health inspector who has raised her three younger sisters single-handedly since the death of their parents when she was 18. Much to the chagrin of their male partners, Eva is still running her sister's lives, even though they are all now adults. To put an end to this situation, they hire master player and meat delivery man – make of that what you will – Ray (a miscast LL Cool J) to woo her into moving to another city where he can then dump her before returning home. Immediately it becomes evident to even the most casual viewer that this is a perfect plan. A plan without a flaw of any description. How can it possibly go wrong? Hmmm, we think, looks like the writers might have written themselves into a corner with this one…

As you might have already gathered, Deliver Us From Eva's biggest problem is that it announces its divorce from reality within seconds of the opening credits. Even movies like this, which inhabit a self-contained urban never-never land in which the real world never intrudes, need to possess some degree of believability, but this one doesn't seem to care whether it makes sense on any level. Eva starts out as an overbearing monster with a hair-trigger temper, all tightly-buttoned business suits and severe hairstyle, but is swiftly transformed butterfly-like into a hip and sassy 'sister' by the attentions of a nondescript man who stands out from the crowd thanks only to his size. Funny how Hollywood comedy screenwriters so often seem to believe that all a stuffy woman needs to lose her repression is a good seeing to in the bedroom.

Eva's sisters, each of them bright and beautiful, seem curiously content to allow their older sibling to dominate their lives, and begin every other sentence with the words 'Eva says…' like mindless dolls with a key and a piece of string in their back. Quite frankly, rather than wanting to get closer to these Stepford candidates you'd think the hapless trio of men would be seeking out ways of putting a little distance between them and their partners. Given that Ray's seduction methods possess the sophistication of an average nineteen year-old's, the ferocious Eva's defences crumble surprisingly quickly, and it isn't long before she's rolling around in his lap like a playful kitten. While this may have just about got by had someone with a little more charisma than LL Cool J taken on the role of Ray, the former rapper's performance is so understated that he manages to conjure no sexual chemistry whatsoever with the delectable Miss Union (and I write that with the fearlessness of someone who knows that a large body of water separates me and the rapper-dude). Mr. J is a curious choice for the role: it calls for a smooth seducer, an effortless ladies man with an air of confidence that LL (what the hell do you call him, anyway?) lacks. He was presumably selected to lure in the young black audience, but he's too big and clumsy for the part of Ray, and never looks comfortable. His character is all wrong for the feisty Eva, anyway, and that's another of the movie's weaknesses. The characters are either paper-thin or hopelessly stereotypical (eg: an outrageously camp homosexual hairdresser – I wonder how long it took them to dream up that one). While the minor characters are picked off-the-shelf from some kind of screenwriter's equivalent of Wal-Mart, the central characters' are never filled out, and their actions are designed solely to drive the action along with no consideration given to consistency or logic. Once the basic premise is established, the movie embarks on a slow journey toward farce, without any stops for development or insight, before taking an ill-advised left turn toward a conclusion as corny as it is contrived. And it arrives in such a rush that you can be forgiven for believing that director Gary Hardwick wants to get the journey over with as much as the viewer does.

The only real positive to be taken from the film is Gabrielle Union on whose shoulders, thanks to Cool J's reserved performance, most of its weight falls. She shoulders the burden admirably, proving herself to be an adept and appealing light comedienne, and she deserves to be seen in more – and better – leading roles.

To try to defend movies like this by declaring that they aren't supposed to be taken seriously is something of a cop-out. How much leeway do you give a flick simply because it's a light comedy with no artistic aspirations? Does this excuse its makers from striving to create believable scenarios and characters, and from making at least some attempt to add something new? I don't think so, somehow: comedy writers owe the audience as much as any other kind of writer.

I can't remember laughing once during this film – and I'm a man: easily entertained, you know?

Enjoyable movie! 4* out of 5
x1c014 February 2005
When I start to watch this movie I wasn't expecting the movie of my life but it's a good romantic comedy. The 105 min of this movie seems 10min.Good cast, nice interpretation and a reasonable direction. If you already saw Breaking all the rules with Jamie Joxx don't waste your time because it is very similar. Gabrielle Union seems to like this kind of movies and she do it well but not perfect. It also had a good plot which kept my attention. In resume this is a film that you don't have to push your mind to the limits to understand him, it is a very light movie, watchable, I'm sure you gonna have lots of laughs and when the movie its finished you will have a large smile in your face.

Stopped heaving after 20 minutes

Deliver us from death by cheese. I tried not to take it seriously, I really really tried to laugh at LL Cool J, and I really really really tried to take a moral message from it, but my brain just wouldnt let me. The first 30 minutes or so were pretty funny but as soon as LL Cool J turned on the charm it was like a living hell. I'm sorry, I cant continue writing.........I need the toilet.

i have seen it a couple of time so those people who don't like get over your self OK and it is funny sad and exciting for those people who want a little bit of everything and you have to like some of the characters to really get into it. i like ll cool j in this movie the best all the other movies were OK but this one was the best of all. i don't see how anyone would not like this movie even though some parts in it are a little rude and disturbing.the girl who plays Eva is a good actor and knows how to play actor well. i didn't very much like her in bring it on i like this movie the best .i hope those who hasn't seen this movie likes it a lot.

Deliver Us From This!
corvox180010 February 2003
You know, I really enjoyed this film, the first time, when Elizabeth Taylor starred in it, nearly half a decade ago! How many times can Hollywood be allowed to rehash classics for a racial or socioeconomic niche, a la "Ten Things I Hate About You," or "Romeo Must Die." The time has come for critics and moviegoers alike to tell the established production front that such generational amalgams of pop culture and old fashioned character do not stand the test of time, like fifteen minutes. If you're ready to see the same movie for the hundredth time, don't bother. Just go pick up a nice little book called "The Complete Works of William Shakespeare." Maybe you've heard of it...

Enjoyable romantic comedy
andyj344 October 2003
At first I was cautious about seeing a "black" romantic comedy, that's speaking as a black man.

However as the movie progressed I found the movie funny, witty which delivered good entertainment.

The story/plot is nothing new and generally the script would equally work with "white" or any other "race/ethnic minority".

For once "LL Cool J" acting wasn't (seemingly) wooden and was aptly suited to the part of being a "mack" who was "out-macked" by a foxy and intelligent lady.

The ending of the movie in my opinion was disappointing as it was "surgary" but nevertheless I would wholeheartedly recommend the movie to anyone who has an open mind.
