clips of greatness
SnoopyStyle27 December 2021
This is mostly a clip show consisting of many great Looney Tunes Halloween-themed cartoons. Bugs Bunny and his friends have all kinds of Halloween fun. On the one hand, these are some of the best Halloween episodes starting with Witch Hazel. On the other hand, this is still a clip show. It's a cheap way to create a TV special.

A Decent Bugs Special
Rainey-Dawn9 November 2022
I remember this special - I was 5 years old when it premiered. If you have seen the original cartoons you might be in for a little disappointment because they have only bits and pieces of those cartoons edited to create this special as one story. The special isn't all that bad but it will leave you wanting to watch the original full cartoon in all their hilarious splendor.

This special focuses on the funny Bugs Bunny and the wild Witch Hazel on Halloween night. Hazel naturally conjures up several spells that our toons has to deal with in a fun manner.

You can expect Speedy, Sylvester, Tweety, Porky, Daffy, and a few memorable monsters.

A decent watch.

7/10.

Howler mania

Love animation, it was a big part of my life as a child, particularly Disney, Looney Tunes, Hanna and Barbera and Tom and Jerry, and still love it whether it's film, television or cartoons. Actually appreciate it even more now through young adult eyes, thanks to broader knowledge and taste and more interest in animation styles and various studios and directors.

Instead of featuring the work of just one director (Chuck Jones primarily in the 80s shorts and specials), there is a much more varied selection here, with cartoons also from Friz Freleng and Robert McKimson, all responsible for some great work in their careers. Bugs Bunny is one of my favourite characters in animation and ever and Mel Blanc was one of the greatest voice actors ever.

'Bugs Bunny's Howl-oween Special' sadly is really not a good representation of any of them and in no way does them justice. As far as the later 70s-80s Looney Tunes specials go, it's easily one of the weakest and doesn't do anywhere near enough with its theme.

What keeps 'Bugs Bunny's Howl-oween Special' from being a complete waste of time is the classic cartoons. Almost all the ones featured are very good to great, the exception being the lame 'A-Haunting We Will Do', am generally not a fan of the Daffy Duck and Speedy Gonzales cartoons and that is one of the worst.

In the classic cartoons, the animation is bright and colourful with beautifully detailed backgrounds and fluid character designs and drawing. The music is lushly and cleverly orchestrated, not only adding a lot to the action but also enhancing it.

The dialogue is witty and the gags crisply timed and often hilarious. The characters are very well used, especially Bugs and Sylvester. Mel Blanc's vocal contributions are of bravura quality, bringing an unmatched ability of voicing multiple characters and making them all different, for me he has always been a huge part of what makes Looney Tunes so great.

For all those qualities in the classic cartoons, it is unfortunate that the same cannot be said for the new/additional content, which in quality is the complete opposite. Also did find that the classic cartoons could have been better used, with them being too short, having transitions that are less than smooth and they begin and end in a way that feels odd and disjointed.

Animation quality is significantly inferior, being flatter, choppier, cruder and with little refinement. The story is paper thin and sense is not a strong suit while the music is not as characterful or appealing. Even Blanc sounds off voicing the new material, almost like somebody else was doing it.

Mostly the Looney Tunes characters are not used well, either being underused or with little reason for being there. The main problem is that the material is not funny or inspired, it treads very familiar ground with no freshness and it all feels tired and strained with no wit or imagination.

Overall, a disappointment. Pretty much for the classic cartoons only. 4/10 Bethany Cox

Shameful...

Warning: Spoilers
My folks told me that this was on TV, so I decided to watch it. I love a good Halloween special, and I love Looney Tunes, so I thought that I would surely love this. It turned out to be a very disappointing special, with no real effort put into it.

This cartoon takes many of the older Looney Tunes shows and mixes it in with new elements freshly drawn for the special. Unfortunately, the new footage barely resembles the older footage, and it is too obvious to tell what was created for the special, and what is original. The voices were also poorly done, never really sounding like the original voice actors. The plot of the special is about as thin as a wafer cookie and makes just as much sense too. Character cameo's were poorly included as well.

The only "Good" parts of this special were the original footage from the cartoons. Unfortunately, they only used bits and pieces, often ruining the moments we all know and love. Combine that with splicing other cartoons into it, and new footage with voices that don't match, and it just ruins the experience.

Overall, just skip this special. The only parts you'll laugh at are the original clips, and you'll grown at the new stuff. I don't believe they put very much effort into it, and it feels more like an insult to the original classics. Just pass.

Ugh

Warning: Spoilers
Great classic cartoons (incomplete) and awful new ones-that do not match visually or tonally- stitched together trying to act like one long story on one night (which makes no sense). This is disrespectful to the original cartoons. It should have just been a bunch of the Halloween stories without the in between stuff that's obviously written as a segue.

Best of mediocrity

Warning: Spoilers
"Bugs Bunny's Howl-oween Special" is a 25-minute cartoon from 1977, so this one has its 40th anniversary this year. The great quantity of writers and directors for this relatively short film can be explained with the fact that this is basically a puzzle and the individual pieces were taken from older Warner Bros. cartoons from the Golden Age of Animation. The voice acting is basically a one-man show by the legendary Mel Blanc with the nice addition of the recently deceased June Foray voicing a pretty crucial character. As for the contents itself, the title summarizes them pretty well. But sadly the overall outcome here is on a level where I would only say the biggest Looney Toons fans should check it out. The problem is not that it is never scary, that was kinda expected, but that it is also almost never funny and you can stomach that somehow for a 7-minute cartoon, but for almost half an hour, that definitely is a negative deal-breaker. Story-wise it's not too compelling either, but that may also be because of my subjective opinion that Halloween never impressed me. Anyway, this one here does not get you back to the glory days for cartoons. The only part I liked was probably the Jekyll/Hyde segment. And that is certainly far from enough quality material for the duration. Watch something else instead. There's a reason why this one did not get an Emmy nomination, let alone win, like so many other half hour cartoon season specials did. Skip it.
