Sit back, relax, and enjoy
dromasca1 February 2004
If you are in for some entertainment, if you like rap music, and/or martial arts films you will enjoy the music. If you prefer good art cinema, or you really look for logic even in the fun films, this one is not for you. I enjoyed it, but I am not sure that my other, more serious ego would have liked the film in any other situation. This film (can somebody explain me the title) is just entertainment, but what are the James Bond films? 6 out of 10 on my personal scale.

This is a must see!
mrdestroyer200123 April 2019
How much enthusiasm, impressions and emotions left this film after watching! All this is the work of the director, famous for the film "Through wounds."

In the story of a professional robber Tony Faith during his next mission, black diamonds are accidentally caught. This message reaches the international criminal Lin, who decides to get these unusual decorations for personal gain. So he kidnaps Faith's daughter. Faith finds his secret partner Su, sworn enemy Lin, as his companions, and together they must stop the insidious villain. Each of them has its own reason for this.

First of all, the film is notable for an unprecedented cast. The lead role was gained by the popular rapper DMX. Actually, he is better known as a musician, not an actor. He has a few films on his account, but here he even managed to open up well to the audience as an elusive robber and loving father. And what to say about Jet Li, he continues to delight his fans with his brilliant stunts and acting skills. Here he played a calm, extremely agile agent, and his main opponent ... This is Mark Dacascos! Yes, unexpectedly for me, he appeared in the negative role of a violent criminal. This role for him turned out to be much more successful than that in the "American Samurai"! It was here that he distinguished himself with charisma, the ability to act clearly according to all the rules of the "villainous" role. This can not be forgotten. Sometimes it even seems to me that this is his best role in the last 10 years. And his partner got the former model Kelly Hu, who also brilliantly played the accomplice of the criminal. And of course, the film does not do without humor. To this end, Tom Arnold, the famous comedian, was invited to the shooting.

But most importantly, the film itself looks at one go. Here we will see everything that is characteristic of 21st century militants: high-quality and spectacular battles, beautiful chases, powerful gunfights and special effects. We immediately see that the budget of 25 million is spent wisely. Particularly memorable are some episodes of the film: a perfectly thought-out bank robbery, leaving the police on an ATV, a secret agent against a dozen boxers in the ring, and finally the final outcome - the division of the storyline into 3 unforgettable fights: the DMX hero rescues his daughter, Kelly Hu against Gabriel Union , a fight of Jet Li and Mark Dacascos. The soundtrack of the film is encouraging music performed by DMX.

The theme of the film is already far from fresh, but the way everything is worked out cannot but remain in the spotlight. The film will always cheer up, no matter how much you look at it. Apparently, the director tried his best!

Sways on the line of entertaining and ridiculous
BroadswordCallinDannyBoy7 December 2006
A thief steals a stash of black diamonds and this accidentally involves his family in an international terrorist plot since the diamonds are not just your typical diamonds. He joins forces with a mysterious guy who is dressed in all black and can kick serious ass with his martial arts skills to set things right. And, of course, kill the bad guys.

The plot is pretty silly, but the action is decent so if you just want to see a cheesy action movie, this is a pretty good choice. However, the film tries hard to have a dramatic and thriller edge that is just laughable. It tries to go push itself into a larger scope by the end. That is where you'll either tell yourself that you enjoyed the movie, or whether the whole thing just crashed and burned for you. However there is a good array of stunts and Jet Li shows off what he does best (again). However, at the same time the some of the action scenes seem to beg you into thinking that they are good with their fast paced editing and slow mo that doesn't really manage to cover up much of their mediocrity.

Basically it is just a direct-to-video action movie, but with star power. It was that, and only that, which provided it with its theater run. --- 5/10

Rated R for violence and profanity

Somewhere Between the Cradle and the Grave...

Not a bad movie but nothing spectacular in terms of originality...

DMX beats up some people. Jet Li beats up some people. Gabrielle Union takes (most of) her clothes off (with her fine self). Lots of stuff breaks and blows up.

6 out of 10; I'd wait for the DVD...

Forget Thinking and the Viewer May Have a Good Time With This Action Movie
claudio_carvalho2 August 2004
After a well succeeded heist of many jewels, including some black diamonds, Fait (DMX) is chased by special Taiwan agent Su (Jet Li) and by the Taiwan criminal Ling (Marl Dacascos). They both wants the black diamonds back, having opposite intentions. Meanwhile, the stones are stolen from Fait by the Afro-American criminal Jump Chambers (Chi McBride). Ling kidnaps Fait's nine years old daughter Vanessa trying to exchange the diamonds for her. Fait and Su join forces to fight against both gangs. This movie is one of those which the viewer shall not think about the flaws in the story. The attractions are the action scenes, with explosions, fights, car chases etc. The problem is the humor is missing in this film: Jet Li is not funny like, for example, Jackie Chan and the same happens with DMX, when comparing for example, with Chris Rock. Therefore, the movie becomes `too serious' for its proposal. In `Cradle 2 The Grave', Tom Arnold is the funniest character. `Lethal Weapon' and `Rush Hour' are good example of successful action movies. Anyway, fans of this genre will probably like this film. My vote is six.

What did you expect, Oscars?
jbensaved26 August 2005
Warning: Spoilers
If you want a life changing movie, one that makes you think and wonder why you are alive; do not rent this. But if you want a funny, action and just fun movie; buy this.

DMX (as Fait) is a good actor. And with his last performance in Never Die Alone, he will only get better. His character is really a fatherly man having to be crooked in order to survive. Although you sure aren't going to see Fait's inner struggles, you will get to see him in action.

Jet Li doesn't have the greatest action scenes. Not as good as him versus himself in that horrible movie The One, or him fighting hovering over water in the amazing Heroe. Good action scenes. Of course the final confrontation in a ring of fire does seem familiar (remember Romeo Must Die).

Tom Arnold and Anthony Anderson provide great laughs. And Gabrielle Union is really only there as eye candy, but one is that a bad thing. This movie, regardless of its flaws, is still a good action movie with a heart.

Things I learned from this film...
vcalio11 March 2006
Warning: Spoilers
1) The Chairman of Kitchen Stadium for Iron Chef America is evil! 2) Black diamonds are priceless but you don't want to wear them because they tend to blow up. 3) DMX has no formal training in the martial arts yet can beat up those with black belts. 3) Jet Li really likes Johnny Cash because he only fights important battles when he's surrounded by a ring of fire (See Romeo Must Die and Kiss of the Dragon). 4) Kung Fu is more powerful then ultimate fighting. 5) DMX: Loving father by night and murderous diamond thief by day. Go figure. 6) Tom Arnold is really as stupid and talentless as he seems. 7) Fat black guys can make it big in prison

Too much parallel cutting is the real villain here
gridoon29 August 2005
"Cradle 2 The Grave" offers nothing new, and does not play exactly like real life, but it is certainly busy and never boring. However, the way it achieves this busyness - the parallel cutting between two or three different action set-pieces - is perhaps the biggest problem with this film: just when you're starting to enjoy one sequence, the film cuts to another! Acting-wise, Jet Li gives what must be one of his worst performances in this one - his fighting with one hand in his pocket most of the time is perhaps symbolic of his boredom with this project. Fighting-wise, he is as sharp as ever, but until the finale he doesn't face any worthy opponents - he doesn't seem to have the slightest problem even with a cage full of underground fighters. DMX is surprisingly convincing in an action role. Dacascos can certainly fight, but he doesn't have the screen presence to be a scary villain. Of the two comic relief guys, Tom Arnold fares better than Anthony Anderson. Kelly Hu is utterly wasted. And to save the best for last, Gabrielle Union. She looks dazzlingly beautiful and physically fit, performs one of the hottest lap dances you'll ever see, and was obviously well-trained for her fighting. To her, I give **** out of 4 stars; to the movie, only **1/2.

It's an average action movie with lots of action and violent fights
ma-cortes23 June 2004
This is a buddy movie action film . The stars are Jet Li and DMX which unite forces to vanquish an evil and ominous person : Mark Dacascos who wants some precious stones with the aim to make as weapons . The villain abducts his daughter and the starring has to rescue her.

In the movie there is action , tongue-in-cheek , struggles of Kung Fu style , pursuits , comedy and packs a lot of bemusement . Jet Li likeness his contender Mark Dacascos fight of incredible manners . Jet Li's role only fights with one hand for the majority of the movie . The final showdown is overwhelming and breathtaking . Performance is middling but it's an action film where important are the quarrels and the pursuits . Support cast is pretty good such as Kelly Hu , Gabrielle Unión , Paige Hurd , and Paolo Seganti . Tom Arnold and Anthony Anderson interpret a humorous and first-rate couple . Not only is this the 2nd film to star DMX, Jet Li, and Anthony Anderson together , it is the first film where all three of them share screen time with each other . All three of them starred in Romeo Must Die . At one point, Aaliyah was set to star in the film until her untimely death in 2001. And even Arnold Schwarzenegger was slated to star . It contains a colorful and evocative cinematography by Daryn Okada. As well as a thrilling and stirring musical score by John Frizzell. The motion picture was regular but professionally directed by Andrzej Bartowiak . Rating : 6 , mediocre but entertaining . Acceptable and passable

Suprisingly good action flick
jusver8016 December 2003
The Good:First off,I didn't expect anything from this movie except good action but I got more than that. The acting is what I got and I have to admit it was pretty good,DMX believe it or not was actually acting in this film and made it believable as the father desperate to save his daughter,Gabrielle Union pulled it off as the sexy thief,Jet Li was also good as the undercover agent, and Tom Arnold and Anthony Anderson were incredibly funny in this. The action was crazy in this film it was an adrenaline-pumping ride.

The Bad:The story was good for 2/3 of the film but then the last third turned into a saving the world type of plot,it makes no sense whatsoever then there is the villain who is not intimidating but he is one hell of a fighter, and the music may please those who listen to rap but it won't appeal to everybody.I also like when a movie is based on reality but in this movie everyone is flying doing two kicks in the air but then again this is a movie.

Overall:This a good action flick that is worth seeing if you can suspend your beliefs and leave your brain at the door.

High on action, low on grey matter.
hitchcockthelegend15 June 2014
I guess when push comes to shove it's an action film that delivers the requisite supply of biff, bam and kerpow action sequences. Yet even allowing for the old "leave the brain at the door" requirement for such action comic malarkey, the script is too poor, the acting equally so, while the choreography is weak. The latter of which a big misstep when you have Jet Li and Mark Dacascos fronting the good guy/bad guy axis of the story.

Plot pitches Li's ass kicking detective with DMX's urban thief together as an unlikely buddy buddy combo trailing missing diamonds and DMX's kidnapped daughter, and that's pretty much it. There's no attempts to expand the characters or add some emotional depth to what is meant to be a pretty critical situation.

It often feels tired, like a recycling of so many other film's of similar ilk, originality is out the window here, hell they even get Tom Arnold in to reprise a watered down version of his character from True Lies. Gabrielle Union and Kelly Hu are on hand to add the sexy sizzle in thankless roles, while Dacascos barely registers as an uber villain.

Lazy and redundant, all told, a waste of time for cast and viewers alike. 4/10

Good for what you would expect.
Darkness87627 August 2003
Ive seen a lot of bad reviews for this film and i am sick of these dorks that only give monsters ball and other films of the genre high ratings because of nudity and "good scripts". This is an action movie wit jet Li and it delivers what you would expect. Hell DMX even attempts to use martial arts and his acting is certainly improving as is Jet Li's. Combine Romeo Must Die and Exit Wounds and this is what you get. The fights are great (Jet vs the champions of UFC), the comedy is there (Tom Arnold and Anthony Anderson) and the film is certainly entertaining so if you want a mindless film with lots of action this is it. Damn Monsters ball. I give this movie a 8!

not as bad as critics make you think
mcmonster785 March 2003
I'd like to start out by saying that most critics put WAY to much stock in the story. Let an action movie be what it is: An action movie. This is no different than any other mindless violence with bad dialogue and really killer fight scenes action movie. I don't know if these critics (the two 'Thumbs Up' guys come to mind) expect Oscar nomination-worthy acting and scripts out of these movies or what, but I think that when they can put their expectations and reservations aside, we can all start enjoying action movies more. That being said, this is not one of the better action movies I've seen. It's entertaining, I've always like Jet Li's American films (I haven't seen any of his early work), this isn't one of the best, but it's all still choreographed well. Tom Arnold and Anthony Anderson team up well together as a brazen comedy act. DMX almost reprises his role in Exit Wounds here, which was another decent action movie from the same team who made this movie. Mark Dacascos is the only disappointment here, I was expecting something more from him after his performance in 'The Brotherhood of the Wolf,' though this is better than his performance as Eric Draven in 'The Crow' television series. Thankfully, these martial arts action films are replacing the action films of old, because I don't think the genre will survive on films like 'Collateral Damage.' Don't see this expecting 'Braveheart,' this movie is devoid of any seriousness in the script, and for once this may be a good thing. 6/10**

Stupid fun
biznizzman8 July 2006
Warning: Spoilers
Will someone kindly explain to me and others about how DMX, who plays a thief and hitech burglar in this movie, can happily walk in and out of jail under police protection? And who included that utterly lame "faith" bit? This movies does have some entertaining moments like Tommy hitting on the security guard. That scene was hilarious. It was also interesting to see improvisations being made during the burglary. Jet Li tries too hard to throw a punch, contradicting a lot of Kungfu impressions which make soft blows give a hard punch. I guess physical fitness really does matter afterall. Maybe he needs to learn a bit of Wing Chun instead of his traditional style. This movie is polished in bits and pieces but the overall impression is nothing great. Just turn off brain and enjoy.

Expect This Cradle Not 2 Rock
indycysive27 February 2003
Joel Silver and Andrzej Bartkowiak once again brings us another Rap Star/Martial Artist collaboration movie in which I like to call, "Hip-Hop Chopsocky" Flicks. I enjoyed both Romeo Must Die and Exit Wounds, however I'm getting the feeling that Silver and Bartkowiak are using a Xerox copy machine to develop the next action flick. Expect everything you saw in the first two films to appear in Cradle 2 The Grave.

Yes, expect all the action sequences to drown the whole plot of the film. Yes, expect DMX to have his hip-hop soundtrack blasting in most of the action scene. Yes, expect the two protaganist of the story to reluctantly get along with each other and then later on to share a common bond at the end of the movie. Yes, expect Jet Li to have the same facial expression throughout the whole film and no more than 10 lines in the movie. Yes, expect the same fat black guy from Kangaroo Jack to be back as the black comic element. Yes, expect Tom Arnold, a guy who was once married to a woman who looked like Kangaroo Jack, to be back as other white comic element of the film. Yes, expect a night club scene and every prop seen in a Hype William music video (i.e. Jacuzzi, champagne, and big booty bitches.) Yes, expect the Rap Star actor do some martial arts of his own. (And I'd like to say to DMX, "Yo dog, stick to rappin', cuz the karate thang ain't you. You got those thin wires making you look good.") And yes, expect Jet Li to fight with his counterpart nemesis, in a ring of fire at the end of the movie. Where the hell is Johnny Cash when you need him!

And as for Jet Li, I do respect him as a martial artist but since he's been making movies in US, his skill have been more half-assed compared to what he did in his Hong Kong Flicks. The scene where Jet fights in a cage match was the only highlight of the film. However, only to be distracted with DMX's action sequences, with camera going from one scene to the other. For me, I'd rather see Jet Li do his stuff than to see DMX being pursued by cops. I live near Oakland and I see that sh*t almost every day.

Overall, I would suggest to save your money and watch Romeo Must Die and Exit Wounds at the same time. Or if you don't care what I say...Hell, go spend the $9.00! But remember "the Cradle" is robbing you!

Typical formula with good results
send2long1 March 2003
Typical formula of action hero(s) need to save world from ultimate weapon. Sub-plots of kidnapped daughter and past-friends-now-foes was acceptable. Good fighting and horrible dialog... again, the companies stuck with a formula and it worked fine. Excellent fight coordination which included some old-school tricks such as the 'arm-break-at-elbow' move. Too bad Jet Li isn't into getting any on-screen action b/c it would be good for the Asian American male image in cinema.

Entertaining enough
Antagonisten7 February 2005
It seems director Andrzej Bartkowiak has a knack for making these "mix Asian actors with hip-hop stars"-type of movies. Personally i think the concept is becoming a bit dated, but this is still the best outing so far from the director.

A jewel thief steals a special kind of stone, getting in way over his head. This causes his daughter to be kidnapped and he has to try and get her back while retrieving the stones that are valuable beyond what he could ever imagine.

When looking at the cast, consisting mostly of martial arts experts and rappers, it's clear that this is not a movie to be watched for the acting. Basically if you have seen Exit Wounds you know what to expect. The action is directed well enough and there are some moments of quite well paced fighting. Jet Li is as usual nothing much to cheer about in the acting department, but amazing when it comes to the fighting. Much the same could be said for Mark Dacascos. What i felt was maybe that these two actors were under-used. When having two such skilled fighters one would have thought they would try to exploit that to the max. Instead DMX is given way too much space. His acting is embarrassing and his fighting is decent at best.

Like in Exit Wounds the comic relief consists mostly of Anthony Anderson and Tom Arnold. This works well enough and adds a less serious atmosphere to the movie. Something it badly needs since it's very high-strung at times. So. While this is not crap it's no masterpiece either. Rather it's a good popcorn-movie for a Friday night. Entertaining enough but more or less forgettable. I rate it 6/10.

I'm still wondering how this movie was made
Agent1011 June 2003
When will rappers stop fantasizing they are real actors. First it was movies, then video games. What's next, directing?! Clearly, DMX thinks he can do all of that and kick some kung-fu butt in the process. The only problem: he can't act! The best way to describe this movie is that they had an actor who couldn't speak English and the other who couldn't speak correctly, and one couldn't distinguish who you were talking about. Jet Li was almost as awful in this film as DMX, which just proves he should stop teaming up hip-hop casts to try and give him some hip credentials. I'm almost begging him to do another Black Mask movie or Once Upon a Time in China. To sum it up, when Tom Arnold is your most accomplished actor on your docket, maybe you shouldn't make the movie.

It's an action movie dunderhead
flingebunt20 April 2005
I have been wanting to write a movie review for Cradle 2 Grave for a long time because I enjoyed this movie. But for the life of me I can't remember anything about the movie.

Then I realised that is the whole point. It is a cool action movie without the burden of anything else. This is not a movie for people who would rather spend their evening wading through a copy of "Being and time" if you get what I mean. (Actually it is not really for people who get a headache trying to figure out how to tie their shoes).

Reviews should not be able what you think of a movie but advice to help you decide to watch it or not.

I don't think I need to say anything more.

As dumb as they come
hannahchow20 June 2004
Let's whip up a little cinema souffle. Mix generous portions of mindless violence, ridiculous science, and cardboard characters. Add you've-seen-it-all-before gung fu fights and a you've-heard-it-all-before hip-hop sound track. Serve lukewarm at best. Slight kudos to Anthony Anderson and Tom Arnold for providing some light-hearted yucks--especially the self-deprecating chit-chat over the end credits. But the rest of this derivative mess is stupefying. Bottom line: "Cradle 2 the Grave" is one of the most annoyingly unnecessary films of 2003.

Seen it all before.
=G=13 August 2003
Just not all in one flick. "Cradle 2 the Grave" is an energetic stuntfest with Jet Li as a Taiwanese special agent in Los Angeles after some black diamonds on the loose who has to wade through a small army of semi-bad guys, bad guys, bad-bad guys, good-bad guys, and maybe a couple of bad-good guys, I really don't remember. Li plays the strong, silent, and short type. Strong because he does his fighting with one hand in his pocket (hey, why use two when you only need one). Silent because he can't act. And short because, well, he's the shortest person in the film right after the midget. In addition to Li and the bad guys, "Cradle 2..." includes a couple of babes and a cute little girl, a convoluted story which goes unnoticed, and a whole bunch of action stuff with the usual absence of sex and nudity which we seldom see in a Li flick for reasons of karma or something. A slick shoot and hyperkinetic freak show, "Cradle 2...." is almost certain to lower your IQ by 20 points. (B-)

Just plain BAD!
waaf3 March 2003
One of the worst movies I've seen in a long time. The director, writers and "stars" need to view a few good action films to see how it's done ("Die Hard" or "Under Siege" might be good places to start.) The story is so lame, the characters so one dimensional, and the acting so pathetic (HOW does DMX continue to get work?? He's about as wooden and uncharismatic as a stir stick), there is just nothing or no one to care for in this movie. And to top it off, Jet Li, the one real draw the film has to offer, is totally wasted. The hokey editing makes his fighting skills look like something from the Power Rangers. A telling comment I heard on leaving the theater pretty well says it all: "How did that film EVER get made?!"

Good For What Its Worth
Simmonz11 March 2004
I didn't expect a spectacular film, just something that would keep me entertained for the majority of it. I got just that. Jet Li's fight scenes were worth my while and quite well done. The addition of Mark D. was a nice addition, he is a great opponnet for Li. I just wish they had more screen time together. The biggest weak spot to this film was DMX. He is not even close to a good actor, and he can't do entertaining fight scenes, and is very weak when emotional scenes are being done (ie. with his daughter here). This film could have been much better if there had been some other angle than a kidnapped daughter. Overall I think this movie while not excellant, was pretty good. Fans of Jet Li might like it, if you can stand most of his other U.S. films, than this will be more of the same.

Good entertainment
iwatcheverything1 November 2003
If you go into this movie looking for great plot and meaning then I must ask you why you rented this movie in the first place. No action movie has those things. Action movies are all about fight scenes and blowing things up and this movie has all of that. I really enjoyed watching this film. Jet Li is a great action star and will probably be putting out more and more American action movies. DMX along with being a great rapper is becoming one of my favorite action stars. I am hoping that he keeps getting parts also.

If you are at home and looking for an exciting entertaining film than this film is for you. Check it out soon.

Cradle 2 the Grave is loud, stupid, and boring. I am so sick and tired of seeing rappers-turned-actors in such stupid movies like this. (* out of * * * *)
AngryMovieNerd15 October 2005
I am getting sick and tired of these rappers becoming actors and making bad movies. First it was Romeo Must Die (2000), then it was the mildly entertaining Exit Wounds (2001) and now it's Cradle 2 the Grave (2003), all produced by Joel Silver (and directed by Andrzej Bartkowiak). Here is a movie that is on autopilot and overdrive at the same time; it does nothing original, but does it very rapidly.

DMX plays Tony, whose last name sounds like fate, but is spelled "Fait." But the film gives us no clue as to how it is written. Fait and his cohorts (Gabrielle Union, Anthony Anderson) break into an L.A. diamond vault in a attempt to a steal a couple of black diamonds. But their caper is interrupted by Su (Jet Li), a Taiwanese cop. Then, bad guys (led by Mark Dacascos) kidnap Fait's beloved daughter, while trying to make an exchange for the stolen diamonds, which are actually a superweapon, which would probably bring down the cost of the weapons of mass destruction.

There are some interesting moments in Cradle 2 the Grave, such as when Fait goes to revisit an old friend (Chi McBride) in prison. This isn't your typical prisoner. He has a luxury cell, where prison guards deliver him mail, while his prison buddy makes his fresh lobster.

It also goes for homophobic jokes, and assumes that security guards are very slow learners. Gabrielle Union enters an L.A. building to hit on the male receptionist, who turns out to be gay. So, plan B is to send in Anthony Anderson to flirt on him. When two people try to pick you up in 10 minutes and you're a security guard on duty, do you suspect anything?

Jet Li has done a lot of bad American action films in the past, and here he proves that he is walking into Steven Seagal territory, and his dialogue is flat and amateurish. DMX is dull, loud and boring as the hero, and Gabrielle Union has a thankless role here, except to impress the audience with a striptease scene, while engaging in a cat-fight with Kelly Hu as one of the villains, who sole purpose is to slap the kid around, and keep her locked up in an old, rusty van.

Anthony Anderson and Tom Arnold re-team in another Joel Silver-produced film, and they redeem themselves during the end credits where they decide to make a film about their adventures. Although, it seems ad-libbed, it is a scene that is smart, self-aware and funny in ways that the movie is not.

Like Romeo Must Die and Exit Wounds before it, Cradle 2 the Grave is more than one big action picture. It's a big advertisement for popular and rising rappers. While the film is littered with non-stop violence, rap music drones in the background, distracting the viewer. And one has yet to wonder just what exactly the title is referring to. Maybe the filmmakers thought that it was a cool title that will lure in audiences. Whether you find the title cool or not, Cradle 2 the Grave is one of the worst movies of the year.
