MEXICO CITY -- Mexican film distributor Televisa Cine on Monday launched operations in the United States, where it plans to put out a steady stream of Spanish-language films for the fast-growing Latino market. Mike Doban, who will head up Televisa Cine's new office in Los Angeles, said in a telephone interview Monday that this marks this first time that a distributor dealing in Spanish-language movies will have a definite release schedule. "This year we'll have three films and in 2005 we'll begin a regular schedule of eight to ten (movies) a year," he said. Televisa Cine's first picture, director Sergio Arau's Un Dia sin Mexicanos (One Day Without Mexicans), will hit U.S. screens on May 14. The distributor said that for its second release, it is leaning toward the comedy El Tigre de Santa Julia (The Tiger of Santa Julia). The third movie will be announced in April. Televisa, the parent company of Televisa Cine, is looking to expand its presence in the lucrative U.S. Hispanic market in both television and film.
