Lisbeth Salander is taking a break from the big screen and planning a move to television in a new original series centered around the breakout character from Stieg Larsson’s Millennium book trilogy (via Variety). The literary franchise includes “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo,” “The Girl Who Played with Fire,” and “The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets’ Nest.” The original series is being set up at Amazon under the title “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo,” but the show will not be an adaptation of the Larsson novel and will “instead take Salander and place her in today’s world with a wholly new setting, new characters, and a new story.”
The “Dragon Tattoo” Amazon series is being produced by Amazon Studios and Sony Pictures Television. Left Bank Pictures founder and CEO Andy Harries will executive produce alongside Rob Bullock. Larsson’s book series has sold more than 100 million copies worldwide.

Fans of David Fincher's The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo are upset all over again with the updated news that a sequel will be moving ahead without any Fincher or stars Rooney Mara and Daniel Craig. We heard all about the new direction for the property back in the fall of 2015, when it was revealed the next installment would be, out of order, The Girl in the Spider's Web. Here's the latest: So we're really finally getting another movie in the Millennium series this time? Yes, this is really happening, per official Sony Pictures announcement, and it will indeed be an adaptation of David Lagercrantz's Spider's Web. The book is more of a one-off adventure involving hacker heroine Lisbeth Salander and journalist Mikael Blomkvist, so...

Chris here. Just when you think the Lisbeth Salander ship has sailed, Sony keeps dangling a Girl With the Dragon Tattoo sequel potential in front of us even without original director David Fincher. Well now we have some concrete news: the studio is fast-tracking The Girl in the Spider's Web for a production start next year and they are courting Don't Breathe's Fede Alvarex to take the helm.
Curiously, this skips the two novels that follow Dragon Tattoo, which had at one point been discussed to be combined into a single film. Dropping those stories means we'll miss out on some of the series's most thrilling moments that are also heavy of Salander's background. Not written by original author Stieg Larsson, Spider's Web could be a more standalone piece to keep those reported high costs at bay. Either way, after Don't Breathe was a sharp and tidy thriller (and...

The other week came word that Sony Pictures was moving forward with "The Girl in the Spider's Web," a film adaptation of the fourth book to feature the iconic Lisbeth Salander character first introduced in Stieg Larsson's novel "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo".
The project was coming in the wake of David Fincher's film adaptation of that first novel back in 2011 for the studio, but it was reported that Fincher and that film's stars Rooney Mara and Daniel Craig were not expected to return.
Indeed, by jumping ahead to the more standalone 'Spider's Web,' as opposed to the interconnected second and third books, it looked as if Sony was doing a mini-reboot which would be in line with their goals to make the next entry and much cheaper adaptation (Fincher's 'Girl' cost a whopping $90 million).

The Hollywood versions of Stieg Larsson's Lisbeth Salander novels have been in limbo since David Fincher's Girl With the Dragon Tattoo didn't become the record-breaking box-office sensation Sony was hoping for. But now the Wrap reports that the studio is planning to revive the series, with just one catch — well, several catches, actually. Rooney Mara is out as Salander, possibly to be replaced by Hollywood's hottest Actual Swede, Alicia Vikander. Daniel Craig is likely out, as he's too expensive. Fincher is probably out, too. And, finally, Stieg Larsson himself is out, in a sense: The film will be based on The Girl in the Spider's Web by David Lagercrantz, who took over the series after Larsson's death. In other words, this thing is shaping up to be the Rc Cola of movies: It tastes almost the same, and so much cheaper!

Sony Pictures is planning to reboot its "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo" franchise by starting afresh and skipping over the trilogy that made it famous.
"The Girl in the Spider's Web" will be a film adaptation of the fourth book in the Millennium series and the first famously not written by the late Stieg Larsson. David Lagercrantz penned the story in which hacker Lisbeth Salander and journalist Mikael Blomkvist find themselves at the center of a tangled web of spies, cybercriminals and corrupt governments.
The studio reportedly sees the film and book as an opportunity to start the franchise over with Steven Knight ("Burnt") in early talks to adapt the script. Actors Rooney Mara and Daniel Craig, along with director David Fincher, are Not expected back.
Scott Rudin, who produced the Fincher adaptation, is expected to return though and will produce alongside Amy Pascal and Elizabeth Cantillon.

Are you a fan of David Fincher's 2011 adaptation The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo and have been anxiously awaiting a sequel? You're not quite as fortunate. Here's what we know about the franchise moving forward: So we're finally getting another movie in the Millennium series? Yes, but it's not the second installment, The Girl Who Plays With Fire. The Sony plan on "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" "Millennium" series gets stranger and stranger. In order to extricate themselves from the deals on the first series—with Daniel Craig reportedly demanding too much money for a scaled-back sequel, and Rooney Mara, who was Oscar-nommed for playing hacker Lisbeth Salander, reluctant to return without mentor David Fincher in the director's chair—the studio is proceeding with a movie version of the new, fourth installment in the series, "The Girl in the Spider's Web," the one not written by Stieg Larrson, reports THR. After Fincher crafted a too-costly R-rated $90-million movie that grossed just $233 million worldwide in 2011, Sony sat on a costly draft of the sequel, "The Girl Who Played With Fire," written by A-list "Moneyball" scribe Steve Zaillian. Why let it go to waste? Maybe they are still considering an HBO or Netflix TV series for the remaining...

Sony Pictures is moving forward with another The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo film, but it’s not what fans were all hoping for. THR has learned that the new film will not be based on the sequel, The Girl Who Played With Fire. It will be an adaptation of the fourth book in the Millennium series that was written after Stieg Larsson's death, which is called The Girl in the Spider’s Web.
The report goes on to reveal that David Fincher, Daniel Craig, and Rooney Mara will not be back for the project. The movie that those three individuals put together was great! It’s a shame that the studio has decided to not include them in their future plans of the franchise.
The producers of the first film, Scott Rudin and Amy Pascal, are still on board to help develop it, and apparently the studio sees...

Get ready for even more of Lisbeth Salander. According to the series' Swedish publisher Nordstedts, two more Dragon Tattoo books are in the works. The yet-to-be-named novels will be hitting shelves tentatively in 2017 and 2019, respectively. David Lagercrantz, who wrote the recently-published sequel The Girl in the Spider's Web, will be penning books five and six as well. There's no word on potential titles or plotlines, but Lagercrantz has spoken in the past about wanting to dig into Salander's mysterious past, telling The Hollywood Reporter "There are so many questions to be asked about Salander." It's probably safe to assume that any forthcoming books would give...

The Girl in the Spider's Web will get trapped in at least two more things, as David Lagercrantz has revealed he has that many more sequels planned. (Lisbeth will persevere — don't worry.) The author, who contentiously picked up from where the late Stieg Larsson left off, said in a statement through the publisher, Nordstedts, that he "just can't resist. ... It's been so much fun to write and such a breathtaking adventure." Spider's Web has sold roughly 80 million copies worldwide since its August release, according to the AP. The next book, the fifth, is slated to come out sometime in 2017, with the sixth following in 2019. (Great news, Hollywood — that means there's another handful of things for you to make and remake a few more times.)...

The day that Lisbeth Salander fans have been waiting for is here. The Girl in the Spider's Web, the fourth book in the much-loved millennium series, just hit shelves. At least, it hit shelves in the UK; American readers will have to wait until September 1 to give it a read. But we can pass the time reading every review and reaction out there to gain some hints on what the anti-heroine is up to these days. After all, it's been a whopping five years since The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest was released, and that's basically a lifetime in thriller years. And while tons of fans are rejoicing over the return of Lisbeth and her weirdo accomplice Mikael Blomkvist, the book isn't without its fair share of...

Updated: As Knopf pushes ahead with a September 1 release date for "The Girl in the Spider's Web," David Lagercrantz's fourth installment in Stieg Larsson's Millennium series, a possible sequel film without Fincher is back on the table. According to THR, "there's talk of turning the second and third books into one film without Fincher and having 'Spider's Web' close out the trilogy." But for ex-Sony chief and "Dragon Tattoo" producer Amy Pascal, this would mean shelving Steve Zaillian's expensive and already-penned second installment. Amazon already has a high volume of pre-sales for "Spider's Web." Knopf expects 500,000 copies to hit shelves in the Us alone. Earlier: For the past two years, David Lagercrantz has been writing the authorized sequel to the late Stieg Larsson's Millennium trilogy, which features the return of tough hacker Lisbeth Salander, set for August publication. Publisher Norstedts in Sweden plans the...
