Danny and Martin. How strong is their relationship?

Initially, when Martin joined the team there was a lot of testosterone flying about between the two as they jockeyed for position with Danny guarding his status jealously and Martin trying to establish himself. There was a certain suspicion that Martin from his "privileged" background and important Dad may have gotten his quick rise through the ranks because of nepotism.

By the end of the first season Martin had shown that he was his own man, a team player and he and Danny and he appeared to have bonded.

We have just had a rerun of Season 4 in the UK and sometimes you notice things that didn't strike you immediately on first showing.

Danny himself had had drug problems when younger so you would have though he would understand exactly what Martin was going through and the importance of making Martin understand he needed help. Yet he only made one half-hearted attempt to get through to Martin and it was almost as if he was only going through the motions and was very quick to give up. In the end it was Sam who made the effort to break through Martin's denial and then she had to twist Danny's arm into putting him on the right road - it was almost as if it was against his will. His justification was that Martin needed to accept that he needed help.

Sometimes things happen which seem of no significance and then a storyline apprears 2 or 3 seasons later. In the episode I was just watching Martin went to Danny to thank him for his help and tell him his progress. It was a sincere but very sheepish and embarrassed Martin but Danny seemed slightly off hand - maybe that is his way of covering deeper feelings? - and I wonder if it was symbolic that when he reached out his hand to shake Martin's it was only part way as if he was reluctant. It was very hard to interpret the look on Danny's face - it was almost as if he was thinking differently from what his actions were portraying.

I'm sort of left with the feeling that whereas the bottom line is that Martin would go to the wire for the team, Danny mightn't and there is still some resentment left in Danny towards him.

How does anybody else see the Danny/Martin relationship?
