- There was some alterings in the game when it got translated from Japanese to English. The blood was turned into a "white" liquid and the sight of Morrigan in a transparent robe & thong & her nipples were not showing during Lillith Aensland's ending. And there was some inexplicable name changes such as Lei-lei=Hsien-Ko, Zabel Zabrock=Lord Raptor.. However in Capcom Fighting Collection (2022), the edited gore can be turned on/off, and the game can be played in English or Japanese.
- This game was originally released as Vampire Savior: Lord of Vampire in the arcade in 1997 in both Japan and North America, with the promotional title "Vampire Savior Lord of Darkness" for the North America version. The only difference is the lack of Donovan Baine, Huitzil,, and Pyron. This version was also used in the collection releases of Darkstalkers Resurrection (2013) (despite like the PS1 version would also have the name of Darkstalkers 3 in the North America version), and Capcom Fighting Collection (2022).
- The Sega Saturn port would use the same characters as the PlayStation 1 port, but would retain the game's original title Vampire Savior: The Lord of Vampire as that version was released exclusively in Japan.
- For the release of the Japanese-exclusive PS2 release Vampire: Darkstalkers Collection (2005), elements of the Darkstalkers 3 home release port was included of being able to unlock secret game modes for Vampire Savior, Vampire Savior 2, and Vampire Hunter 2 to be able unlock the unavailable characters in each version with the character select screen the same as Darkstalkers 3.
- In 1998 a version was released on the PlayStation. The PS1 version which was released in Japan as Vampire Savior EX Edition and as Darkstalkers 3 in North America combines the features of the original Arcade release, along with the characters and features from both Vampire Hunter 2: Darkstalkers' Revenge (1997) and Vampire Savior 2: The Lord of Vampire (1997) which is the first time that all three versions of the original arcade releases were combined together into a single game.
