Wonderful archive of funny moments
This is a wonderful collection of classic, jaw-dropping, fun moments from many classic game shows. If not for two things, it would be perfect. One: The patter among the hosts is mostly dull and unnecessary and takes up precious airtime from the hilarious clips. Two: For whatever reason, "Truth or Consequences" and "The Price is Right" were excluded, so it's not a comprehensive program. We all know that many, many uproarious moments occurred on both of those shows. Still, it's great to see this collection of clips. What's sad is that so many of the people who were the best hosts/guests are now gone (Gene Rayburn, Paul Lynde, Bert Convy, etc...) and it's a tragedy that so much of Lynde's "Hollywood Squares" stuff was destroyed. No one ever tossed off a zinger like him. This hour is worth it just to see the hair and clothes of the contestants (notably on "The Newleywed Game"!) and for glimpses of celebs in the past (Schwarzenegger, a very charming Burt Reynolds, Ray Bolger...) The British versions of the shows are also fascinating. The show wisely pays tribute to the glory days of game shows (the '70's) with priceless moments from "Match Game" and "Family Feud" (the clip in which Richard Dawson cracks up is just too funny.) Those were the days and the more contemporary clips pale wildly in comparison. I have shown the tape of this show to friends and literally tears are streaming from the laughs. Also, I am in shock as to how stupid the general public can be (as evidenced by the surveys done by the hosts of this special.) If it runs again, TAPE IT! It's terrific.
