Amazing Footage from the Tragedy
Panorama of Galveston Power House (1900)
On September 8th, 1900, the city of Galveston was hit by a hurricane and tidal wave, which would end up costing more than 2500 lives. With winds of up to 135mph, many considered this one of the deadliest storms of its time and the Edison studio sent cameras down there to capture some of the aftermath. I'm sure many would see this as some sort of exploitation as there's no question the studio would have made a lot of money but today it's interesting to see this footage simply from a historical point of view.
The footage here is pretty much what the title says as we get a 44-second clip of some of the destruction done by the storm. Over the past several years and here recently we've seen the damage that a tidal wave can do and no matter what type of footage you witness it always comes as a major shock. The footage here is no different and you can see how damaging this thing was just by how much debris is piled up. Take a look as the cameras pan and you can see how high it is because people are standing on it and they look like ants compared to all the damage. History buffs will certainly want to see this early footage as it once again shows why it's so important to protect these older films.
