Exclusive: The Exchange has added Bill Pohlad’s Dreamin’ Wild starring Casey Affleck, Noah Jupe and Zooey Deschanel to its Cannes slate.
Roadside Attractions, which snapped up North American rights for the film following its Out of Competition Venice premiere, will release the film theatrically on August 4.
Dreamin’ Wild is the third film from Pohlad, who is also known for his Academy Award and Emmy Award-nominated work as a producer including 12 Years A Slave, The Tree Of Life and A Monster Calls.
The drama is inspired by the real-life story of Donnie and Joe Emerson, two brothers living in the Washington State rural town of Fruitland, who were catapulted to fame in the 2010s after an album they self-recorded in the 1970s was re-discovered by music critics.

Labor Day weekend has never been the home for prime specialized releases, but it is a spot where well-positioned films going broader can thrive. That was the case for “Hell or High Water” (Lionsgate), which gained momentum and looks to be a dominant film for weeks ahead — perhaps even into the awards season. Don’t be surprised if it outgrosses many of the highly touted premieres at Telluride and Toronto.
However, the weekend was unkind to veteran comedy creators; both Kevin Smith’s “Yoga Hosers” (Invincible) and “Max Rose” (Paladin) starring Jerry Lewis received mostly negative reviews and little interest in their initial regular theatrical dates.

“No Manches Frida” (Lionsgate)

Welcome back to the Weekend Warrior, your weekly look at the new movies hitting theaters this weekend, as well as other cool events and things to check out.
This Past Weekend:
As expected, Fede Alvarez’s thriller Don’t Breathe (Screen Gems), starring Jane Levy and Stephen Lang, won the weekend, but it did way more than we predicted, doing better than most movies released in the last weekend of August, winning the weekend with $26.4 million, pretty much double what I predicted. That’s a pretty great testament to the power of Screen Gems’ marketing campaign and that’s more than double what the movie cost to make. Jason Statham’s Mechanic: Resurrection (Summit/Lionsgate) didn’t fare as well as it opened in fifth place with $7.5 million in 2,258 theaters, about where I predicted. Of the more moderate releases, the Obama date movie Southside with You (Roadside Attractions) took in $3 million in around 800 theaters,...

While there’s a film festival going on in Cannes, so much of the festival and the buzz comes, like it is with Sundance, from purchases and pickups of many of the titles being screened there, and even those that aren’t. There are countless deals being struck, but we did our best to round up just a few of the more notable titles that will some day be arriving stateside.
First up, Gus Van Sant’s The Sea of Trees with Matthew McConaughey and Ken Watanabe will be distributed in the U.S. by Lionsgate and Roadside Attractions. Atom Egoyan’s Remember, starring Christopher Plummer, was picked up by A24. The comedy Geezer, starring Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong, has been picked up by Hyde Park International. Werner Herzog’s Queen of the Desert with Nicole Kidman has been picked up by Atlas Distribution for a planned September release.

Even with another flood of specialty film debuts, The Skeleton Twins, the dramedy starring Kristen Wiig and Bill Hader, had another impressive box office showing in its third weekend. Meanwhile, another dozen films tried to elbow past last week’s 14 newcomers and numerous others already in the market, to middling success among those reporting.
Other than Twins, the holdovers that look like they’re gaining some autumnal momentum include IFC Films‘ The Trip To Italy with Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon, and more niche-oriented films such as American Experience/PBS Films’ doc Last Days In Vietnam and Oscilloscope’s Art And Craft. Starz Media also scored a robust gross for the second week of Not Cool, featuring YouTube star Shane Dawson, as it migrated east to New York and was also profiled on a Starz channel doc series.
CBS Films’ Pride can be proud of scoring the weekend’s highest average among new titles.

More than a dozen new specialty films crowded the box office this weekend, including films from Terry Gilliam, Kevin Smith and singer Nick Cave. Perhaps not surprisingly, overwhelmed audiences hit a saturation point, leaving several new titles with, at best, only decent debut numbers. Despite the competition, Roadside/Lionsgate’s The Skeleton Twins held strong in its second weekend with a sizable expansion, and Snowpiercer continued to release strong VOD grosses alongside its waning theatrical returns. On a straight per-theater average, it was Cave’s 20,000 Days on Earth that easily came out on top. Drafthouse Films is distributing the Sundance 2014 documentary, which centers on writer and musician Cave as he reaches that 20,000th day in his life. The film had one of the year’s biggest non-fiction debuts, with a $26,873 gross at New York’s Film Forum. Numbers for 20,000 Days were buoyed by a offsite special event at Town Hall that included a Q&A,...

Chicago – The year caught up with me. 2013 was characterized by a soft start and a strong finish, but overall there were impressive contenders throughout the year and some fine examples of great storytelling and filmmaking. Risks were taken, some truth emerged and even in more “mainstream” films, there were flashes of promise.
This is the second set of top ten 2013 films on HollywoodChicago.com, as offered by film critic Patrick McDonald. Please also sample my colleague Brian Tallerico’s Top Ten. The following films are a testament to the experiences they gave me, what they made me think about afterward and how they fulfilled that feeling – for me – of what makes a movie great.
For every film in those ten spots, there are a number of other films coming in tied at number 11 – Joe Swanberg’s sublime “Drinking Buddies” and the anarchy of “Escape From Tomorrow”; the gutsy honesty of...

Chicago – An overarching feeling of optimism seemed to permeate throughout the 2011 Sundance Film Festival. Studios purchased the distribution rights to roughly 30 movies, nearly double the number of films that sold last year. Several of the festival’s most buzzed-about discoveries could easily find a sizable audience outside of the festival circuit, either in theaters or on VOD.
Paramount and Indian Paintbrush certainly appeared confident in their purchase of “Like Crazy,” the latest film from “Douchebag” director Drake Doremus, which flew under nearly everyone’s radar before claiming the festival’s top prize. It follows a young couple, played by Anton Yelchin and Felicity Jones, as they attempt to maintain a long distance relationship between America and Britain. The largely improvised film has already been compared to bittersweet romances such as “Before Sunrise” and “Blue Valentine.” Jones is quickly emerging as an actress to watch, a fact solidified by the special...

If you're a film lover who can't make it to Park City, Sundance is like the world's biggest tease: a beautiful woman who kisses your neck and whispers in your ear and then vows not to sleep with you for twelve months. There's nothing more frustrating than articles about incredible movies you won't be able to see anytime soon, if at all. The only good news stories out of Sundance are the acquisitions, since they provide hope that, yes, someday we will see these films opening in a theater near us.
With that in mind, I've compiled all the Sundance acquisitions I could find into a single list. I decided to organize them by release date, though most still being determined. As more sales leak out, I'll try to update this as best I can (you can suggest additions to me on Twitter as well). And if you're sick of being teased,...

KoreaTimes reported today that the new slapstick comedy The Last Godfather will be opening in 12 cities across the United States and Canada on April 1, care of Roadside Attractions, before hitting European and Asian theaters. The movie was directed, produced and written by former comedian Shim Hyung-rae (also known as Ray Shim), a name you might remember as the writer, director and producer of Dragon Wars, which was released widely in the Us a few years ago. Shim also stars in the film as the idiot son of a mafia boss played by Harvey Keitel, who is being trained as successor to his father. Jason Mewes (as in Jay in Jay & Silent Bob) also stars, as do Michael Rispoli, Blake Clark and Jocelin Donahue (from The House Of The Devil). According to the article, the film is a parody of Francis Ford Coppola's gangster franchise.

I'm not at the Sundance Film Festival, but I've been working on adding several of the films showing at the fest to the database as many have already received some good buzz and distribution deals. So let's take a look at those that have caused the biggest stir so far.
Margin Call Director: J.C. Chandor
Cast: Kevin Spacey, Paul Bettany, Jeremy Irons, Zachary Quinto, Demi Moore, Stanley Tucci, Penn Badgley, Simon Baker, Mary McDonnell, Aasif Mandvi
