This 1901 copyrighted film is a short piece where a woman on a trapeze gradually disrobes while also performing impressive physical feats on a trapeze swing seat. The two me watching enjoy it very much as a full dress and various types of underwear are removed as part of the act.
Although this is of course hugely tame by modern standards of not only film but also ease of access to sexual material, this short film is very interesting from a historical. Copywritten to Thomas Edison (although made by others I think) this short film seems to have very quickly identified the role of the media is giving people what they want – which in this case is sexual titillation. This is a totally correct decision as we see that sex very much does sell and this is the only thing on offer here. You can comment on the physical skills of the woman on the trapeze in the same way as lap dancers have to be commended for their skills on the pole, but the simple matter is that we're all looking to see how much comes off and, as Patrick Stewart would say, "see everything".
It is very grainy of course and will not offer this same titillation anymore but it is interesting to consider how quickly they went there – and I'm sure this is not the first example of such a target. Worth seeing as a piece of history that makes you think.
