The First "Puppy" Hits the Ground Running!
cairn621 May 2010
The task of turning a classic children's' book into a watchable and fast paced animated special is quite a task to do. But with Ruby Spears' "The Puppy Who Wanted a Boy", Jane Thayer's work is given justice with the first offering from the then-new studio. Released in 1978 as part of the "ABC Weekend Specials" TV series, this film tells the story of a puppy who is very much interested in finding a boy to call his master. Carrying the basic premise of the children's' book, this adaptation gives the viewer a story with a bit more dimension and detailed of a story. So popular was this program, Petey, the title canine character, was given several more specials and later a regular series. In sense, when watching this program, the viewer is seeing the introduction of a future cartoon star. As for the story itself, it is heartwarming, inspiring, and entertaining. If able to be found (copies of this film are nearly non-existent), watch this first, then watch the later specials(there are three more), as well as the regular TV series "The Puppy's New Adventures", and the "Puppy's Further Adventures". While the later programs are fine, one can see the dramatic storyline of this first program play out, carrying the thought that the material is based on literary work. Later shows are more "franchise" series centered.
